Fremantle Dockers defender Joel Hamling ruled out for start of 2020 season with left ankle injury
Fremantle’s depleted defence has taken another hit with key backman Joel Hamling ruled out for the start of the season.
The premiership defender sustained a “significant” left ankle injury during Monday’s training session at Cockburn.
He will join fellow back-six members Alex Pearce (ankle) and Nathan Wilson (turf toe) in the pre-season rehabilitation group.
The club is yet to determine a return timeframe for Hamling, but have put a line through his name for round one.
“Joel landed heavily on his left ankle after contesting a mark at training on Monday and was sent for scans, which confirmed the nature of the injury,” Dockers football manager Peter Bell told the club website.
“He will be further assessed by a specialist, after which we will have a more accurate estimate of the recovery time Joel’s injury will require.”
Speaking at the Dockers’ AFLW clash against Geelong at Fremantle Oval on Sunday, Pearce confirmed he was also out of the running for their season opener against Essendon at Marvel Stadium on March 21.
Pearce fractured his left ankle in Fremantle’s round 11 win against Collingwood at the MCG last season and had follow-up surgery in December to strengthen it.
“It’s all tracking pretty slowly,” Pearce revealed.
“I was off my feet for a while so it takes a bit of time to come back.
“I’m really eyeing off the early part of the season.”
Hamling last week said Wilson, who has been out of the moon boot for a couple of months and progressing well, was “touch and go” for the Bombers match.
It means prized draftee
Hayden Young, Freo’s first pick (seventh overall) in last year’s national draft, and second-year defender
Tobe Watson should get a chance to press their case for round one selection during the Marsh Community Series.
Freo’s pre-season opener is against Carlton at Mandurah’s David Grays Arena on February 29.
After the Blues clash, they take on West Coast in Joondalup on March 7 in their final pre-season hit-out.
