Bont ran around without any attention or tag coming to him and people are jumping on? He's not a bad starting pick by any means but gosh some people are easily swayed by a good glorified training run.
Personally I think tags are a bit of an overrated concern the true great players in the comp overcome attention/tags. Throughout the years players like Ablett Danger Pendles and a few other handy players have put up enormous averages for consistent periods of time and opposition coaches have tried to stop them but they can't because they're on another level. I think Bont is one of these unstoppable players and all this game did for me is show how enormous his ceiling will be when he has an opponent that can't handle him. Sure he won't score 195 every week and i wouldn't randomly consider him if you really don't like the pick but I don't think there's shame in picking him off the back of that performance if you rated him previously as this performance just reinforces what you felt before. As for the glorified training session part I think you can take preseason games more seriously than ever, since the afl changed it to just two matches teams have put out way better sides so you get a reasonable indicator for what's to come.

You are right when it comes to the uber premiums but we cannot always fit all of those guys in our teams. So I think for the next row under them it can play a part especially if a player will have 2 or 3 games close together against teams with known taggers. Eg Zorko and Sloane are very influential players for their teams especially if left alone to do their thing. However they have shown they cannot handle hard tags (Sloane has got a bit better lately) so picking them can be tricky.

Spot on mate I couldn't agree more, I believe Bont is above that Sloane/Zorko tier that's why I think the worry of a tag shouldn't stop you. The way it's looking this year we aren't going to have room for the Sloane types there's about 10 blokes I think can go 110+, you're right picking the correct ones isn't going to be easy.

Wasn't Sloane one of the better performed players versus the notable taggers last year?

Who are the three off contract first round on ballers....Kelly ? Taranto ? .....?
I believe that would be Caldwell, Hately and O'Hallaron.

........Given the Giants' history – they've lost at least two midfielders every year since 2013 – other clubs will begin to circle should Caldwell (Victoria), Hately (SA) and the uncapped O'Hallaron (Victoria) be starved of opportunity...…..

He averaged 103 last year which is still the second lowest season ave he has recorded since becoming a premium back in 2012. If he can return to 108+ this season and handle the tag when applied then he is probably back to his best.

Had that game against Melbourne where he was off before 1/4 time as well.

Looks the type who will lift again with the captaincy.

Was just pointing out he has a good record against North. Probably doesn't mean much, I was just curious. Interesting he's never scored a ton against the Hawks.
And it was a good observation. Got me looking immediately to see if he had a favourable draw. If he played those three teams in the first 5 games then he might be a great pick to get off to a flying start. As it is he only plays one of them early and does have Hawthorn in rd 7.

Cheers...something to consider when deciding on rookies/bench positions

What are people’s thoughts on Titch’s likely fitness base and the possibly impact on his TOG and possible “rests” during the season?

Played 61% TOG in Marsh 1 which it totally understandable as I’m sure the Hawks are just trying to ease him in. But, once the real thing starts, should we expect him to have a fitness base which will allow him to run out full games strongly or is he likely to be a bit underdone? If underdone, what impact might this have on his ceiling?

Also, what are the chances that he will be given a week off “here & there” to freshen him up or to manage soreness and not put too much stress on his leg?

He certainly looked pretty good the other night, but will it take him a bit of time to get back to 100%

Exactly my thoughts. Interesting to hear @Ironhawk thoughts

Currently tossing up: Titch, Danger, Bont for that M4 spot

It's a serious injury he is coming back from, it likely will take him a while to get back to full fitness.

$630K is a lot to spend. Compare that to $700K for Gawn or Grundy. At full fitness in 2018 he has shown he can match their scoring. You just need to ask yourself are you willing to pay that much for a player that may only be 90-95% fit for a few weeks as he gains match fitness.

I'm no expert on leg injuries, and I don't have any inside info at all that nobody else here wouldn't already know, but I haven't heard anything about him missing matches. I do expect he may be rested slightly more than usual in the first few rounds of the season, but not to a significant level.

He's in my team and has been since I knew he would be playing all the pre-season games. I don't see any bigger risk with him than any of the other premium mids. He's underpriced if anything.

(Note: I'm a Hawks supporter and terrible at SC - use your own judgement).

Macrae/Bont/Dunkley is such a head****. You almost need to start with one of them, but which one?

-Macrae the safest but most expensive
-Dunkley the riskiest but with the highest ceiling
-Bont somewhere in between but has the benefit of being cheaper

Dunkley sure is tempting. Take out the games he played forward last year and his average jumps up to 130. I think he's also less likely to get tagged than the other two. But Macrae is pretty much a lock-in 120ppg player and Bont looks like he's going to take his game to another level this year.

All three is plausible If you have to pick one, go Dunkley, just, but pick two, and pick Macrae as well.
