Cant seem to work away from the 5 premium midfield considering the amount of quality there is at the top and the amount of value at other ends, docherty is an upgrade target as i think he will be a slow starter and id like to see him go around a few times first and whitfield is over priced in my opinion, should definitely drop in price playing away so much at start of season SmartSelect_20200303-223927_Gallery.jpg

Treloars strings worry me.
Coniglio the sleeping giant. Reckon Greene will cash in on Taranto missing too.
They worry me too. Is Cogs a season long keeper? What happens when Ward and Taranto are back? Oh, silly question, I forgot we're talking about GWS premos here:oops:

It's a fair point and one I'm still weighing up. But let's look at one of the players that you mentioned (yes, I'm cherry picking) in Dangerfield. He's up against a potential tag in DeBoer and could conceivably end up with a 60-70 point game. If I start a rookie on field in place of Treloar then I would be hoping that the rookie would score the same. One of the reasons that I chose Treloar in the first place was because of his POD plus he's a proven scorer with pretty solid reliability, his ownership % will plummet now with none of the competitive teams owning him and I cant see any of them picking him up before his bye. How much of a difference that means I'm yet to work out.
He's only a POD if he outscores (or scores less than, negative POD) the premium everyone else is picking. You're already conceding 60 points by having him miss rnd 1. So he now has to outscore everyone else's player + the 60 points you've lost. If we were talking Ablett or Danger in their prime and you had a rookie score a ton in rnd 1 before Ablett or Danger were locked out then it might be a plan.

You're dead right with what you're saying. Guess I was trying to convince myself to treat his score as a tagged type score. Maybe I'll start Pickett on the bench and see how he goes;)

Very similar to my post Marsh1 team, but I bet that your hoping that it's not just Doc scoring well but a host of others too. Guess the next round will give us a clearer picture. My only worry with a team like that is cash generation, so I've gone down a path that I guess is very little trodden and loaded up my bench. I also have Ceglar as my 'get out' in case Naismith looks like being a bust. The other MP's, like yours, can easily be traded down/up and properly nail those rookies on the bubble as well as those 'role change/breakouts' that may rear their heads.

FWIW this is my current team, seriously thinking of keeping Treloar if it's only a one game miss as I have 7 rookies to choose from for cover, yes, it might cost 60 points but he's someone that I'd like in my side.

ok that makes a lot more sense now that I have seen your team , don't mind your bench setup like that until the rookie picture becomes clearer , plenty of flexibility

if you get the right D & F bench rookies making $$$ you can then use that to upgrade your 5 onfield rookies

like your thinking and approach

Names will change, but a structure that I'm happy with.
Roberton would have been nice at D4, and may still be needed, but will deal with that if and when required.
Now, we just need Naismith to put in a solid performance...

Nice team. Do you trust Naismith to play every game until you can afford to upgrade him? If he misses a game you cop a donut, unless you see Xerri as that cover.

Thanks. Naismith is a risk I'm willing to take, if he were to miss mulitple weeks then you obviously look at options (which may involve a restucture and 2 trades). But if it is one week, you just cop it on the chin. No different if Grundy/Gawn get a one weeker and you don't have any cover.

@aps1

Don't know how much emphasis you put on the MBRs with your starting team, but that's one of the more brutal R13 bye team I've seen posted.
Haven't put a lot of emphasis on it yet, once I know which rookies I need, I can tweak premiums from a pool of players I like. I do normally load on the last 2 weeks though.

Fair enough, FWIW I have Naismith too but don't trust his resilience as much as a Gawn or Grundy, so I added Ceglar both as cover and as an option for trading in a decent ruck should Naismith go down.

Nice side. Same structure as mine with a few different picks. Acres v Wingard for me. Went Wingard. Nice team

I haven’t totally crossed Ceglar off my shortlist. The issue i have is that if he provides cover in the first 7-8 weeks then you are really only getting cover from your f7/8 rookies. That may only be 40-50 points. Does that justify picking Ceglar?

Trying hard to resist Naismith , but a lot better coaches than me seem to be taking that option

Docherty , Roberton , Ash * , BZT , McAsey , Starcevich * / Williamson , Brander *

Macrae , Kelly , Cripps (not Crisp) , Dunkley , Bont , Rowell , 2 e's , Fence / Anderson , Caldwell , So Long

Grundy , Gawn / de Koning

Whitfield * , Dusty * , TJL , D Smith * , Bonar * , Hill * / combo of Cameron * , King , Rankine , Xerri *

couple of more expensive rookie placeholders , hopefully the cheaper ones in defence & midfield will appear.

12 possible keepers + Roberton so probably one short

I've been umming and ahhing about Ceglar and the point you raise makes sense. My current F7-8 are Cameron & Bonar/Budarick, guess I'd be hoping for a bit more from those 3. I'm keeping a very close eye on Cameron and Xerri, if it looks like they get an extended run then there's no point in having Ceglar.

If I had to hazard a guess Herbie, I would bet those coaches considering not starting Gawn didnt suffer through the majority of last year without him or Grundy like you and I did. If they had, i am guessing they probably wouldnt be flirting with the dark side! I wouldnt wish that pain on my worst enemy! :p

so very true , I still have nightmares

although once I brought back Goldy the second time (or maybe the third time) he did match Gawn in the second half of the season , albeit I think Gawn did miss a game ?

Starting English was just a warm up for future years , Mummy worked for 2-3 weeks , trying to remember if I had ROB actually onfield or not.

Eagerly will be watching the next Melbourne game to see how much game time they give Gawn.

It's good to see so many teams with Naismith now. Hopefully means less competition!

Still running with Grundy/Gawn myself, may look at a "Gawn Gone" team again after this weekend though once I decide on the rest of my team to see how much changes. It didn't seem to make a massive improvement when I tried a no Gawn team last time, but with potential playing R3 cover it might look a bit better. Getting burnt by not starting Grundy last year may be clouding things a bit.
