This weekend was supposed to be the China game , wonder how safe it is in Shanghai ?

Apparently Koch is asking the AFL if they can have 10,000 - 20,000 fans social distancing in the stands for the showground.

Well and good temperature testing them before entering the ground , but how do you stagger arriving and leaving the ground , bars , food outlets , toilets etc etc to follow social distancing.

Apparently public transport has been a nightmare at peak times with only 40% people returning to work.

SANFL allowing 80 (4 x 20 indoors) people per club to attend games at Adelaide Oval , presumably in function rooms.

Theoretically this should apply to the Showdown as well

I was at his first game and his last. Which made me wonder approximately how many of his games would I have seen live.

Made a back of an envelope calculation by looking at the breakdown of venues he played at on AFL tables website, I reckon I saw him 300 times live give or take 5 or 6 games either way.

I have also tried to estimate how many AFL games I have seen live and I think I would be somewhere between 430 to 450 odd.

I have just noticed that SBS are replaying the 2006 World Cup soccer game between Australia and Japan at 3pm this afternoon. I am not a big soccer fan however if you have never seen it or want to relive it I recommend it as I rate it as one of the greatest moments in Australian sport.

Was fortunate enough to attend the 2006 World Cup.

Proudly wearing my Everton shirt for Timmy , 90% of the Aussie supporters asked "who is Timmy"

a hot afternoon in Kaiserslautern and the legend was born , could have sold thousands of shirts afterwards and made a mint

12 June what a day and what a train ride home ?

unreal

still can't believe Nakumara's goal was allowed

amazing how the whole atmosphere sunk in the stadium.....but afterwards !!!!! one of the greatest days of my life

Haven't seen that match again since 06. Watched the last half hour or so of the match, and from what I saw, Japan were playing the better quality football for most of it. Definitely noticeable how the Aussie team has improved in general quality since that time. Still glad the Aussies won, but they got a bit lucky. (Can't comment on the first half goal, but I remember at the time thinking it was poor).

First Aussie goal came about from a howler from the Japanese keeper. Cahill was very lucky not to get a second yellow about a minute after scoring it with a poor tackle. Second goal was definitely quality (even if Cahill should have been sent off by then) - pity we don't really have someone who is a reliable finisher like that now. Third goal was a bit opportunistic, Japan were all out of shape at that point.

Think that was the first time I have watched the game , must admit Timmy should have given away a penalty after our first goal......very lucky.

And we won't talk about the ref in the Italian game ?

Hopefully they show the Brazil & Croatia games as well.

The Golden generation , we will be lucky to ever see a squad that good again.

One thing I did love about Germany was beer was cheaper than coke & water ?

Was a struggle though going to a bar/cafe/restaurant for a quiet beer (Stein) though , almost was embarrassed ordering a half size.

2 Steins later and the party continued.

I watched the whole game at the time and again today and I would not agree with some of those observations.

I thought Australia generally outplayed Japan in that game, had more possession and created the better chances even prior to the 3 late goals. Japan’s goal should never have been allowed after Schwarzer was bumped out of the way by the Japanese forwards. However it now adds to the folklore of that game.

However I do agree that Cahill was lucky not to concede a penalty late and get sent off in the process. I don’t recall thinking that back in 2006 but did notice it today. I also agree that the Japanese goal keeper made a bad error on the first Aussie goal however if you consistently get the ball into dangerous positions then you give yourself this chance and the Aussies were certainly doing that late in the game.

Not sure that I agree that the quality of Australian teams has improved that much even though I don’t follow it that closely. Until the Socceroos can find a way to score consistently against decent defence they won’t trouble the big boys. Cahill is the only Aussie player ever I would say that rates as a world class scorer.

Not sure that I would sit down for the 90 mins to watch the Brazil game again even though I know we did play pretty well and only their second goal which came very late sullied that a bit. However I would watch the Croatian game which was amazing for very different reasons.

Fair enough. Just seemed to me a lot of the time the Aussies were just focussed on getting it forward without much thought for passing to players in better position. They did create more chances, but a lot were not good chances. May have been better quality in the other 60 minutes.

The Croatian game was one I wouldn't mind seeing again. Not sure I could rewatch the Brazil or Italy games though. Bunch of diving is my main memories of the Brazil match and a BS penalty in the Italy match.
