Anyone think swallow and grimes can match the likes of bartel/mcveigh/mitchell for points?
And will geelong let the kids take over and give jimmy a role where it destroys his supercoach ability.
Big price tag for him if he scores rubbish
Jimmy will continue to be thrown about and play the utility, but he is such a quality player he will score well anywhere. I reckon Grimes can perform well enough, but not sure on Swallow.

McVeigh, Mitchell and Bartel sure look the goods for defence. They are priced the same as some premium mids though. a 580k player in defence and a 580k player in the midfield still contribute the same to your tally. I believe they will be the top 3 highest scoring defenders but I think all their output will decline slightly. Overpriced and I'm thinking the money is better spent on Jack, Cotchin, Watson etc. Will depend on where the value rookies are of course and the value of the other defender alternatives. Starting with probably Mitchell and will look to upgrade into Bartel and McVeigh.
From experience I've found it hard to upgrade into the gun premium mids throughout the year, so am inclined to start with 4-5 of them and sacrificing on defence.
Obie I think I have to agree and I wouldn't be surpised if more don't move away from Mitchell/McVeigh/Jimmy as more "breakout" and "value" contenders start to have good pre seasons. At this stage I like the look of my side more with a value defence - eg really like the Hurn/Grimes/Swallow mould with decent early draws. I was burned hard on chasing defensive points last year and plan to join the under 500k club on that line (today anyway! ha ha). I see the big 3 as still being top 6 defenders but could all still drop under 500k. It could be a good opportunity to break away from the pack with positive POD's with good early draws. (I am such a believer of the growing Rowsus RAMP cult LOL!)

I hear what you are saying with the Gun premium mids too but at the moment I find myself searching for value everywhere. My current draft team only has 5 players over 500k.

Really looking forward to the value v gun's & rooks this year. Go team Value!

I'm interested if anyone has any thoughts on GWS players who could have a Trent mcKenzie style break our in their third year. Eg Trent went from 60's av to low 80's average last season. With opposition focus like to be on shutting down Heath Shaw I wonder if someone could benefit?

To be worth a gamble they would have to have had a solid game average in their first 2 seasons. IF they were classified as a mid there isn't much point looking at them but 4 defenders come to mind who fit this category,

Curtly Hampton - don't know much about him but he is my tip to go up 20ppg or so.

2012 - 17 games at 56.1
2013 - 18 games at 64.2

Tom Bugg (18 games at 69, 14 games at 54), Adam Kennedy (15 games at 53, then 19 games at 57), Nick Haynes (8 games at 37, 11 games at 64) are the others that spring to mine but Curtly seems to be the one with the class. Anyone who knows about GWS care to comment.

Clearly there is fairly significant risk with this approach but we all like to find THAT breakout player!

I don't think GWS defenders will feature prominently amongst coaches for the Rd1 team except maybe Heath Shaw.

For those considering Grimes, looks like he'll be playing in the backline almost exclusively in 2014. I remember reading he's been training with the defenders and with all the new midfielders, he should be playing off a flank which imo is where he's most suited. Could mean he's less likely to break down?

Assuming he doesn't get injured during the preseason he'll be in my side.

As long as he stays fit and uninjured, I think he'll be a popular pick.

I still haven't forgiven Grimes for scoring 13 and then missing half the season the round I traded him in last year. I know it just bad luck but gee..... it hurt....

I'm still undergoing intensive therapy after suffering exactly the same fate last season as you Philzsay... The fact that he's still so tempting suggests I may have been a little hasty cutting my sessions back to twice weekly.

Well Philzay if it is any consualtion at least you were not the only one to get hit with that one.

I too have been burnt by Grimes, unfortunately as he is injured on a regular basis he nearly always some kind of discount or is under priced.

Unfortunately also it has meant that he has not been able to fulfill his potential. Another reason why his name keeps coming up.

Lol cheers guys, glad to know I'm not the only one.

If we pick him again and he gets injured again may have to start a GA group - Grimes Anonymous!

Think it is about time the creators of SC developed a "never again" function. This would allow coaches to nominate players on their "never again list" long before the start of the season. That way, when we're looking to pick our starting team or upgrade, the player would be "greyed out" and unavailable for selection! No longer will we suffer temptation from the likes of Grimes and others! Perfect solution! :)

Thought that thread would have been started before, a search can't find it, but I am a PC muppet.

The good thing is, you've barred so many players now, your team picks itself. What with there only being about 30 players left to pick from......

Yes ! I'm thinking about 30 first year players, no bad history, lots of cash, fun times
