Thanks for your thoughts!
Good call re injury risk! Might justify paying a bit more for Oliver.

Heppell’s role will be important to observe. He may get a good one at HB/Wing with Saad and McKenna gone which actually might be better than a rotating mid role. Could get kickins?
That’s an interesting call re kickins. I seem to recall that Heppell was D or D-M early in his career, and pretty handy for a young guy in that role.

There was an official comment from the coach on Heppell moving to the defence FYI as well (just to prove it's not just me making it up!). Heppell indeed did start his career as a defender before moving the the midfield. With the addition of Caldwell and the lack of HBs at Essendon, it does make sense for him to move to the defence ala Kade Simpson style.

ESSENDON coach Ben Rutten has backed Dyson Heppell to remain as the club's skipper, with the Bombers considering swinging the veteran onballer to a new position across half-back next season.

The club lost important running defender Adam Saad to Carlton during the recent Trade Period, while fellow speedster Conor McKenna retired from football to return home to Ireland in September.

It led to Essendon recruiting Nick Hind from St Kilda in the final minutes of the Trade Period, with the 26-year-old having earned his place on the Saints' list as a mature-aged recruit after starring across half-back for the Bombers' VFL team.

But Heppell could join Hind in Essendon's defence next season, with Rutten suggesting the club was eyeing a number of options for its backline ahead of his first official season as senior coach next year.

"We'll probably see a variety of personnel back there," Rutten told AFL.com.au's NAB AFL Draft Countdown.
"Unless someone really jumps out and owns that position, we're certainly open-minded and I think we've got some flexibility to be able to replace the likes of Adam Saad and Conor McKenna."
Heppell, who turns 29 next year, is again set to lead Essendon as the club's captain despite the emergence of reigning best and fairest winner

On the verge of his fourth successive season as the club's skipper, Heppell's leadership credentials earned the backing of Rutten as the club prepares to bolster its rise up the ladder with three top-10 picks in Wednesday night's NAB AFL Draft.
"There's no doubt we've got some really strong emerging leaders that really took a big step forward in their growth last year," Rutten said.

"Andy McGrath, Jordan Ridley, Kyle Langford and we also forget about Zach Merrett, who is still quite a young player in terms of his age. But he's got some great football and great experience behind him.
"Certainly, at this stage, I think that Dyson will be our captain. He's really widely respected and he's unanimously respected.

"But I love the fact that McGrath and Ridley, in their standout performances last year, have started right now with their preparation and with who they want to be as footballers. They really started to have an honest reflection of where they were and have put the work in.
"I'm already seeing some signs with our guys who are back already that we're going to have some of those guys jump up again. That's what I'm wanting to see from our guys who are back training at the moment."

Is 78% tog good, bad or average for a non KPD?
Average to bad. Using AFL Stats Pro and classifying by defender only (no KPD) the majority range from the 78% to 85% range.

2020:
J Howe, J Sicily, L McDonald and J Ridley= 90% +
J Lloyd, L Whitfield, B Maynard, J Crisp and N Haynes= 86 to 89%
S Hurn, D Rich, S Docherty, C Daniel, J Lukosius= 80% to 85%
T Stewart, J Short, Z Williams and B Smith= Below 80

T Stewart had less than 80% field time in 2020, will the retirement of Harry Taylor equate to a greater percentage on the field hence improved scoring?

On Rowell, it’s a no from me. I’m generally very hesitant to pick second year breakouts. They are an exception to the general rule and Rowell may well be one, but at $500k, I think it makes most sense to wait and see. Might only cost an extra 50-60k if he does breakout properly. If he was 400k, I’d be more interested.

Tom Stewart broke his collarbone in the first quarter of a game. That would have impacted his time on ground. I like lots of defenders and few forwards.
Also worth noting, Geelong looked to rest their star players in game more so than actually give them a week off in the condensed fixtures.
For example, I recall a couple of times thinking Stewart was off for what felt like 75% of a quarter.

Good info @Bomber18. This is the interesting part of that article for mine.

So this may have implications not for just Heppell but other players at Essendon under SC consideration

This is a team I quite like the balance of - if I do end up starting the really expensive players like Lloyd, Neale, Gawn and Macrae, who are absolutely elite but might be well overpriced if shorter quarters really benefited them.

On the other hand, taking too many mid-priced punts can be just as bad, so currently this is the team I have. I've tried to ensure I have the rookies folk like at this early stage but it's so early it's basically irrelevant.

In their debut season after 5 games Sam Walsh and Rowell ave were 99.8 and 100.8 respectively. Walsh went on to ave 86 for the year. Who knows what Rowell may have done- 89 or maybe 129? One thing about selecting Rowell is that if he doesn't go through the roof scoring wise as long as he can hold his own and maintain price at least he can still be used to trade to a rising/must have breakout player.

After 4 games Rowell was averaging 126.5.

I know he played but surely 3 minutes v Geelong for 6 points shouldn't be counted.

I would take rowell any day over Walsh. Both similar situations come into a bottom team. Rowell looks like a man Walsh looks like a little boy.

Rowell only played 11% TOG in one of those matches. Most first year players do slow down as the year progresses though, some of them quite significantly.
