Outside Lloyd, mills, williams and laird what defender fills you with confidence? If Whitfield was fit then him. I don’t see much value there.

Do you think harmes is worth a punt?
Could be, there's definitely a narrative and the role was really good for the first preseason game and he looked good.

As @Ben's Beasts pointed out, let's see how that looks with Viney and Brayshaw in the mix as well. Definitely on the watch list.

Cheap DEF rookies may not show up this season.
Looking very unlikely isn't it!

As per original post. Useless making deductions now off limited data. In 2 weeks time we'll have actual stats with proper footage and updated injury lists.
We've just had 50% of the preseason games done. We've got one round of games before the season to go. Normally there are guys that we doubt will play after their preseason games. This year there weren't even any of the kids actually playing.

Think the concern is genuine. We're loaded with forward rookies and got a comfortable amount of back rookies and quite possibly even have 3 ruck rookies but the defenders are a massive concern.

Outside Lloyd, mills, williams and laird what defender fills you with confidence? If Whitfield was fit then him. I don’t see much value there.
Depends if you're hunting value with the pick or just want to land a nice safe premium pick, also depends on just how much value you need. I'd argue 3+ points of improvement from a premium presents good value but you might need 10.

I would say Laird, Mills, Whitfield (though he just became an upgrade target for mine), Ridley, Stewart, Saad, Daniel, Howe, Haynes, Short, McDonald, Docherty, McEvoy, Williams, Dawson, Duggan, Lukosius, Coffield, Clark, DBJ, Houston, Witherden and Rich all have value arguments that can be made pretty comfortably in that 80+ group.

Lloyd is really the only one I struggle to make a case for breaking even at starting price and he's so far clear of the pack he really can lose a half dozen points and still be fine.

As for the fills with confidence... personally I love Daniel, Stewart, Ridley and Short as guys I think will match or improve on their starting point and then Mills and Laird in the midfield as guys with genuine 110+ potential. That's 6 guys without Lloyd, Whitfield or Ryan (who to me is an upgrade target as there is too much unknown).

Basically the only two I seem to find myself not liking are Maynard and Crisp and even then I've got no rationale for it and could I imagine someone could come up with a strong case for them (Crisp's starts at his durability).

You do hear it every season about lack of rookies, usually early wrong calls and they do turn up.
Difference this year? We are only 2 weeks out from the season starting!
I would say two weeks out people panicking about a lack of solid rookies is the norm actually.

Outside Lloyd, mills, williams and laird what defender fills you with confidence? If Whitfield was fit then him. I don’t see much value there.
I think you could be quite confident with T.Stewart and C.Daniel as well, probably throw in Docherty too. They would be my next few picked after Lloyd, Laird, Williams.

All you need to know about Duggan this season in this article at the bottom of the post and straight from the horse's mouth.

Basically he will do the 'team thing' which at the moment means playing as a midfielder while Yeo is out. He prefers to play as a defender and may end up back there at some stage this season depending on what the team needs.

Yep - that makes him a pass for me

Once again making deductions from data that is of poor validity. But hey I've said my part. Let the panic set in!

I mean if team lists for round 1 are the only data you want to use I guess that's fine but 50% of the actual games are done, I'd say that's a pretty significant data set to indicate a pattern.

I'm not panicked but it certainly makes sense to prepare for what looks to be a likely scenario, either plan for the 200-300k guys or more premiums and take rookies elsewhere but I don't think it hurts to be ready for something that looks likely right now and that's that we might only have 3 sub 200k rookies even picked in the backs.

This is the problem though. I too think he's probably the best of the 200-300k defender range but have him realistically averaging 70-80. Which is really borderline as a pick isn't it?

Maybe he'll tear up the next pre-season game... or maybe we'll get a last minute rookie! Otherwise it might be premiums all the way to D6.
Im sorry but i got lost with which Young were all talking about. Could you please remind me?

I guess we agree to disagree then, because I'm certainly not calling a few intra club scratch matches without stats or scores 50% of our data set. ;)

Nor is @wogitalia. We get the inter club practice matches currently played and this weeks AAMI series this year. That's it, for better or worse, and the stats you get coming out of those games. The club insider commentary during each game was quite insightful.

I read Wogitalia's comments as more to do with the way teams will be announced this year. We won't know sunday teams until 4-5 games have been played already so the options to change plans a pretty limited if the sunday rookies don't eventuate.
