ST KILDA defender Dylan Roberton has today announced his AFL retirement, effective immediately.

The decision comes following a two-month hiatus during which Roberton weighed up his post-football options.

AFL FIXTURE Check it out here

"I’ve come to a point where I need to put my family and future first," Roberton said.

"Football has been a huge part of my life for such a long time and I’ve never lost my passion for the game.
Technically he's been in my team all preseason, so another one bites the dust!

Sad to see how he went out, had a couple of really good seasons.

Why do we treat a concussion different? Is it any different to an ACL, hamstring or whatever? Surely if someone does an ACL you just say they were concussed as well and use the sub, hell there'd be an incentive to actually knock the player out which is absurd.

Whole sub thing is just stupid, injuries are a part of the game and some of the great wins in the past are when a team is undermanned and overcomes it.

God I hate the people that run this game.

I agree for the most part and don't think a concussion should be treated any differently to any other kind of injury although I do feel if you lose a couple of players in the first half you're at a pretty big deficit. Are there any other sports where you can be so screwed over by injuries and lack of subs? NBA, NFL and NHL all seem to have a heap ready to go on, not sure what soccer is like on that front but would we not just be better off with 6 on the bench?

Maybe that's just the element of sport that you can't fix and it's easiest to just be left alone. I just hate the idea of having someone that will maybe play, I've seen how my side ruined the young players with the green vest and know too well they'd do the same with this kind of idea too (SANFL side would play before, we'd hold the player back so they can travel, they wouldn't get used, it would happen once more and then they're dropped after good form in the seconds due to having not played in two weeks and needing to prove themselves).

Maybe it should be more like the NFL - they have 48 players at each match, but only 11 at a time on field. Just have the whole squad at each game, and allow unlimited interchanges. The better players will still spend most of the time on field anyway, as it is a waste having them sitting on the bench for half of the game. It would be hell for SC, but I don't mind it. Better than some other changes brought in anyway...

I have often pondered if we would ever get to that point.

I also thought if you did perhaps send in a 'hitman' early to err, tire, the oppositions betters players early.
