This is the bit that I struggle with, where do we draw the line? Why not have a dozen blokes on the bench?
I struggle with it why just have 1

Obviously any team can be affected any time with game ending injuries and it then is disadvantaged , one covers one but then if they have any more nothing has really changed.

Maybe next season they increase it to 2-3 injury subs.

And the doctor has to decide this right there on the spot??? Without any sort of CT/MRI scans? How can one be sure if a player "can't play" for 12 days? Some players can heal/recover quicker than others
They're allowed to make mistakes. Looking at the rules, the expectation would be to err on the worst case.

The sanctions are there if they keep making the same "mistake".

So obviously a concussed player can’t play for 12 days as it’s mandatory.

Would like some clarification around an ‘injured’ player. We’ve been told the club doctor has to determine that the injury would keep the player out for 12 days but there is no mention of the word ‘mandatory’. So can an ‘injured’ player then play the following weekend if they recover in time?

What’s stopping a club doctor getting this med cert but the player then being fit to play on game day?

An injury now goes from a disadvantage to an advantage.

They could have improved this in a couple of possible ways.

1) Made it only a first have injury sub rule (happens in second half it’s bad luck). Avoids the sub being much fresher than everyone else and early injuries have a big effect.
2) Shoot (put down) any players who are subbed out with supposed long term injury. That would stop any faking of injuries.

I think my first suggestion would have been more palatable (but not as much fun!)

I think it was an idea floated and being seriously considered (apparently) to have the player who is the "SUB' not being over the age of 21 because.....well who knows really....I believe it was a quote from Clarko
I wonder if Clarko would be saying the under 21 thing in thier premiership contending years.

Iran was ahead of its time. Plus I think they only did their half-time executions for blasphemy or treason, not faking injury, but it's not that different.

Apologies if I have misunderstood what you are saying

But I think this is the inherent problem. My understanding is that if a player comes off and is replaced by medical sub, that player is automatically ruled out for 12 days, whether they are proven fit immediately after the game or not? IF this is the case, as others have said, it is a massive responsibility on the Club drs to make that call there and then without the support of scans etc

This is what I want confirmed. Notice how in the article on the AFL website it doesn’t say anything about a mandatory 12 day period unless it’s concussion?

Loophole city.

Yeah certainly not explicit, but I think its implied? To me that reads, if you get subbed out, its been decided you arent playing for 12 days and that is it? But you are right, certainly needs clarification

To be eligible for a medical substitution, the club doctor must decide that an injured player will be unable to play a game in the next 12 days.

I'm thinking we see such headlines as;

"The club doctor assessed player X midway through the third quarter and determined the hamstring injury would rule him out for at least 12 days. Thankfully subsequent scans have cleared player X of any tear and we will assess him throughout the week with the view of him being available to play this weekend".

And the once great game of Australian Rules Football further descends into a farce by the self appointed "custodians of the game' the AFL. What a joke of an organisation - the people in charge of making the rules must also be in charge of website design.

Seriously if it wasn't for fantasy football i would switch the garbage off....now onto the more important things like any good coach....how do I exploit the rules these buffoons have come up with to get an advantage over other coaches?

They're trying to overcome the disadvantage suffered by a team that loses a player to an injury, but by allowing a fresh player on the ground, particularly if late in the game, they are putting the other team at a disadvantage. The rule should be that if one team has an injury to a player and puts the sub on, the other team has the option of putting their sub on at the same time.
