Bit of a Q&A with Damien Hardwick today. I’ve copied the relevantish SC ones.

which player does he feel will break out in 2014 and play a lot of AFL footy?
We're looking at Reece Conca for a breakout year. He's shown really good form but at stages he's been cruelled by injuries.

where will Hampson play most of his footy this year? Ruck or forward? How has he been training?
Shaun will split his time between ruck and forward. Probably predominantly in the ruck. Been training really well.

Where will we see Lids spend most of his time this year - across half back, in the middle or maybe forward?
He's training as a mid/forward, but there's always a strong possibility that he'll play back. Is that you Lids?!

will we see Steve Morris in the midfield at all this year?
It's a possibility, we have spoken about it at match committee

how is mature aged recruit Sammy Lloyd coming along?
Yep he's settled in really well, looking fit and just a really smart player

Yes definitely, that would be very handy. Especially the ruck situation, I presume he will go about 90% of the time but still would want assurance as I'm still undecided on my RUC structure.

Paint me cynical, but maybe the first phone call he should make, is to a 14 year old girl, that barracks for Collingwood, and say "Thanks for all the publicity". I am not sure he would have won this award without her "help".

I don't think any award he won makes up for the nonsense he was put through.

How he handled it was super. Many other people would have not made such a stance or simply let it slide because a teenage girl said it.

Fair point. But if you look through other previous winners of the award (at least in recent times) and there's often something that's happened during the course of the year (or immediately preceding years) which "promoted" their cause/award. Fiona Wood who treated victims of the Bali bombings is one who comes to mind. Would probably have never of heard of her background or the breakthrough work she was undertaking with burns victims before the terrorist attack. Similarly with Goodesy, regardless of the controversy during the season, he's obviously been an advocate for assisting indigenous youth, promotion of indigenous role models etc for some time. That the unfortunate incident during the course of the season may have brought exposure to him doesn't devalue his contribution (not implying that you were saying that at all). I have a slight issue with the way in general that the Australian of the Year is awarded. Only in so far as the tendency that somewhat high profile nominees generally seem to get the nod. Certainly not detracting against the work or worthiness of Goodesy for the award though...
