Not really sure it says too much about Downie. What Downie (when able to actually play VFL) is producing, is pretty much exactly what I expected, and where I expected he’d be at. The hype and immediate expectations on him were raised tenfold based off a good 10-15 mins (which it certainly was) against the Bulldogs in that practice match. Realistically, he would’ve been nowhere near debuting round one if we had all our cattle on the park. The exact same goes for Brockman really.
It is a testament to Jai though, he’s physically more developed than any of our draftees last year, produced dominant performances at VFL level so far this year, and if he was on our actual list earlier, no doubt would’ve played AFL football already, which was something Clarko even said yesterday I think in the presser.
But yeah, I think there needs to be some patience with Downie, and a lot of other draftees from last year, particularly the Victorians after last year was wiped out. God, I see on the socials plenty of people blowing up at NTH for taking Phillips. If these people had actually watched Phillips play before, they’d know his bottom age performances at under 18’s level late in that 2019 season were matching and arguably better than what top agers Rowell and Anderson were doing in the same side.
