On a positive, every time someone says or writes this it's a fond memory of my mum threatening me with a backhand if I dare to say it that way again  I've never known anyone who hates that grammatical faux pas more than she did!

My personal two are the misuse of "loose/looser and lose/loser" which I just can't even understand how or why people screw up (written form only) and dominance/dominant. Both highly sport related
Haha, good on your mother! Yeah, I try not to be a grammar nazi, but it is funny when I see it all the time.

Could you start 5 from North?
Hall, JHF, Goater, Thomas and Phillips.
2 keepers, Hall and Thomas, expensive rook JHF, cheap rook Goater and mid pricer Phillips.

reckon all bar Hall have upside.
Don't pick Phillips.
I'm struggling to see the argument for Thomas. I'm sure he improves but does he average 100? He already had a good number of CBA's for most of the year. Greenwood comes into the team and JHF will probably get some exposure in the middle.
The other 3 I can understand if they get picked rnd 1.

Absolutely.

I'd also argue Hall has significant upside, he's solidly underpriced on his scoring last year as a defender, especially his back half as he grew into the role.

Rookies basically don't count, they're gone by the bye so no issue there and you take what there is.

I'd actually argue there are a couple of other North guys that could also be considered.

Thomas averaged 97 over the last 13 rounds and 104 over the last 7 after moving to a more midfield based role and absolutely flourishing in it.

His finish last year was scintillating and he finally clicked as a player. There was nothing about how he, or the team, was playing to end last season that isn't sustainable. They lose Cunnington from their midfield, aka numero uno, so there's a lot of midfield time to throw around but Thomas is super high impact and really got his tackling and inside stuff going last year.

He's right up there for me in the best breakout candidates this year and probably the most proven with the most role certainty of that group. I'd bet solid money he goes 95+ this year.

I love Phillips as a player but it would be 100% contingent on him replacing Cunners, which is very possible. People forget how good a prospect he was going into last year's draft because he was underdone having missed a season, he was legit on Rowell/Anderson's level as the 3rd wheel in that side as an underager for his credentials as a junior. He played a horrific role for an inside midfielder last year playing almost exclusively as a forward pocket in a terrible team because his engine was not there yet. If he was a mid only I'd not be considering him but as a forward I think he's got the quality to push the 90s in the right role.

But he's 100% role based, if he's not added the engine to play as an inside midfielder and not in the main midfield rotation then I think he'll continue playing too much as a forward where he's crafty but not good for fantasy purposes.

Roos are a really interesting side, if they had any decent forwards I'd genuinely be tipping them for a big move up the ladder but I think they'll struggle to score again this year but they've definitely worked together a midfield that should be trying to overwhelm the inside 50 count.

I expect that JHF will only free Phillips and Thomas up more from forward duties as well, he should be considerably better than them at it as he's legit in that area, not ideal for his own scoring but he's good enough he'll demand midfield minutes also so not phased on him. I'm expecting he has a Heeney/Fyfe type first season which was ~70 a game where he'll knock out a couple of key 120 type scores to spike the price perfectly when he kicks his 3 or 4.

You could throw in Powell there as well and I know people are looking for Simpkin to click for an entire season and go 110 at some point.

As others have said, rookies don't count. If they are there, pick them (JHF and Goater). Some watchers say TT is our most naturally skilled midfielder and I think last year he was starting to believe it. Huge breakout chance.

Phillips is close IMO, if he was that lower $200k range I think you'd pick him much more easily. As it is, he needs to be around the ball - questions as to whether Greenwood and JHF gobble up the slack will be answered in pre-season hopefully.

Oh and there's even more North for everyone... Charlie Comben is an outside chance for early games and a R3 R/F slot.

And another very interesting proposition that no-one has mentioned, multiple solid 80+ seasons in the bag and priced just above rookie level ;)

I've been trying to get my head around how:

Goldy, Xerri and Comben all play in the same line up ...

Was Comben the one who was essentially a mid , and then had a massive growth spurt ?

Sure it was him I was reading about in a article that suggested he would play CHF and was amazing below his knees.

Are Perez & Spicer any chance for Round 1.

Yeah Powell was one of the ones I alluded to. His first season was quietly spectacular and he showed all the makings of a fantasy stud, would not be shocked if he takes a huge leap.

Hardest thing with North is balancing all their midfielders.

Phillips I've covered up above.

I personally think Greenwood is there to play forward and a break in case of emergency mid if the kids are getting beaten up.

I haven't heard it confirmed but assume Cunners is out for the season unfortunately.

Jed Anderson is a sneaky fantasy option in the right role but if I was North I wouldn't be playing him midfield over the younger guys because he's just a limited player compared to what they can be. I think he's similar to Greenwood, if they're getting bullied he goes in to throw his weight around.

Simpkin is a stud. Another that will hopefully put it all together.

LDU finally seemed to get it last year and was genuinely starting to work at an AFL level, be interesting to see if he's finally built a tank this year as he was still blowing up horrendously early in games last year. Extremely talented though and has game breaking potential. Could be similar to Petracca in that it takes 5 years for him to really get how good he can be but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he makes a similar jump in the next 2 seasons.

Thomas is an exceptional talent, reminds me more of Goodes, midfield version, than anyone I've seen in his ability to mark high, move so fluidly, kicks well, not afraid to tackle and just ability to go from inside to outside with sidesteps that very few can make. I thought he was going to waste his talent until about halfway through last year and the penny just dropped with the most resounding echo and he just hit a gear that few can play at. I'm so hopeful he'll continue on that trajectory and not regress back towards the player he was prior to that. One of the great things about Thomas is his ability to play in space makes him a natural to start on the wing and then push in as the extra midfielder, similar to how Berry operated at Brisbane or Kelly at GWS a lot of the time.

JHF will take minutes but I think he'll play high half forward mostly to start out. Will be a matter of time before he demands more and more minutes though, genuine round 13 trade target for mine.

Then you've got Lazzaro, Turner, Zurhaar, Polec, Hayden, Scott, Taylor and Stephenson who'd all love to push through there also in some form or another.

To be fair, I've named 8 separately here, of those I think Anderson/Greenwood will be part time and Thomas can play separate from the centre, so probably enough minutes to go around for the younger guys if they demand it. Simpkin also has great forward skills and Powell I expect also plays more of a wing role.

And Coleman Jones
They don't.

Goldy to ruck and probably one of CCJ or Comben at this point as a clunking forward giving ruck relief.

Maybe two of Comben/Xerri/CCJ if we go really tall but I can't see that happening.

Andersen hasn't had his second vaccine dose, so you can put a line through him, for at least the beginning of the season.

"Clubs can move players who fail to adhere to the AFL's vaccination policy to the inactive list, but must do so before March 9 in order to replace them via pre-season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) rules.

Should they not do so by March 9, clubs will have to wait until the NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft – which last year was held on June 2, or after round 11 – before being able to replace them." - AFL.com.au
