That’s fair.

My counter to that though, has he been a regular part of the main midfield rotations during any of those previous seasons as it looks as though he will be at Carlton?

It’s the role change which has me interested and his role and performance in the first practice match has done nothing to waver my interest.
This is SuperCoach preseason 101 right here, look for role changes and midfielders eligible on other lines. Lots of numbers flying around this time of year and a good time for a reminder to KISS.

The entire basis of selection appears to be completely reliant on a 26 year beating his best ever season in 7 years,.

“Player age/experience affects each individual variable similarly creating a multiplier effect. That is, an older player will play more games per season AND spend a higher percentage of time on ground for each match AND have a higher scoring output. Player peak occurs around age 27.”

The X-Factor for me with Hewett is the possibility that when Walsh comes back, if it looks like Hewett’s role will change to the negative, it could be ideally timed with a Pendles, Merrett, etc DPP switch in round 7. Could be a fun bail-out option if Hewett has gone at 100 but looks like topping out.
Also if someone like N Daicos was to recieve dual position status you could trade G Hewett via N Daicos for a C Oliver/T Miller/ T Mitchell type.

Hmmm, just doing some forward projections on what my team would look like after rnd 9 and 4 upgrades, defence looks a little shaky with:

Stewart
Whitfield
Hewett
N. Daicos
Hinge
McCartin.

100% this and wogitalias's posts above. Its not just the total average thats important - it's the average that on field spot has over the entire year.

Yes - we have extra trades this year. However there is a reason (and its not because the HS wants to make it easier).

Covid will be extremely prevalent this year and cause a lot of forced outages (1 week at best, who knows at worst). Thats why we have these extra trades. It's not to be making the 'perfect team' - I expect we will be struggling most weeks to put 18/22 scoring players on the park. All these extra trades and trade boosts will be used to maximise our playing players - not forming a superteam!
I really dont think Covid is going to be as big of an issue as people think, plenty of players have already had it and we are dealing with 18-35 year olds that are professional athletes, you arent going to need to trade every time a guy misses a week or two either just use your bench like we used to every time a player missed a week or two with minor injuries/suspension.

I think you're pretty much spot on with that assessment.

Now how and when to use those extra 5 trades:unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure:

I think they'll be super useful through the bye rounds (particularly if your team is unbalanced). Ideally, you want to be 9/10/11 going in but if not, the four trades in each of those rounds is going to be very useful in avoiding donuts / maximising your total score over the three rounds.

Im really not that fussed what my bye structure is this year, I'll be trade boosting looking to complete the side as quickly as possible.

Yeah, I must admit I have been ignoring it for most of the pre-season. I did look at one stage and it was something horrific like 9/7/14 .

In any case, I often find the better metric to use is the split amongst premos / midpricers you expect to be playing come round 12. Realistically, the rookies you pick at this stage of the pre-season are just placeholders so their bye round is largely irrelevant. Even the ones locked in don't really matter because they will likely have been traded by that point.

I probably think differently to most and you could argue it costs me from being a genuine contender but I much rather select the guys I want to pick not pick with 3 rounds of the season in mind, one bad round really isnt the end of the world.
