Brodie will be fine. Problem is with Brayshaw.

Mundy, Brodie, Serong, Fyfe, Switkowski will all take up huge midfield minutes, the midfield minutes freed up by Cerra's departure will be completely cancelled out.
If Brodie ends up taking up huge midfield minutes anywhere other than the WAFL I (and Stewie Dew) will have grossly misjudged him, or the Freo coaches need their heads checked. I'd be amazed if Brodie has any sort of impact on Brayshaw's scoring.

Brodie has demonstrated that the only competent position he can play is pure on-ball. During the pre-season game he played the entire game as an inside midfielder.

If Brodie is named as best 22 round 1, how can he not take up huge midfield minutes? Where else would he play?

This is what Longmuir said when asked about Brodie & his role :-

Longmuir said he saw Brodie as an inside player that could add a lot to Fremantle’s midfield mix next season.

“We’re really bullish on him, we’ll give him an opportunity primarily as an inside mid,” Longmuir said.

“There’s going to need to be a secondary role there just to get his game time up, as is the case with all of our mids.

“Whether that is on the wing or we try and bring some of his aerial strengths to the forward line, we will work on that when he hits the program fully.

“He has all the qualities there to be a good inside mid for us, he is really good in traffic with his hands and with his ability to drive from inside to out.

“We’re really going to focus on his strengths…we feel like there is a spot there if he has a good pre-season.”

So far this has been the case - I think this is how I think the Freo midfield will operate this year :-

Fyfe & Brodie will be the main inside bulls - in Fyfe’s absence, Crowden has been playing this role alongside Brodie, I think he goes out of the team when/if Fyfe is fit.

Brayshaw & Serong to play both inside & outside the contest.

Mundy is the one that moves to a more outside role, where he can use his excellent kicking skills to maximum effect

Last pre-season Brodie was looking primed for a big year, getting hype about time trial PBs etc. Last time I mentioned that someone on here pointed out that his improvement still wasn't anything to write home about.

Brodie played the first 3 rounds in a bit of a nothing role and wasn't seen again until round 19 when he was also completely anonymous. Although tbf he did attend 50% of centre bounces in round 2 and still only scored 58.

The point in Brodie's favour is that he averaged 80 over 8 games in 2019 (an equal career high), one of which was a random 8 disposal/19 SC game. Otherwise he's a bit like Preuss. Can potentially score well in the right role, but has played so little senior footy that it's hard to be sure of that.

Bargain, Cripps and Fyfe, what could go wrong.

Sounds bad for Brodie though
Would imagine Crowden loses his cbas before Brodie does

Longmuir has also mentioned that they will use Brodies strengths. Anyone who has watched him knows his only strength is as an inside mid, my thinking is those comments mean they plan to use him there at least early on which could be all we need to get value from him

I am seriously considering going very deep in my midfield as the only cheap mid rookie that looks to have good scoring potential/fast money making potential if he plays round 1 is MacDonald... I never have so much money sitting on the bench but this is an exceptional year with the lack of decent options :-

To fund it, I downgraded Sicily to Hewett which I am ok with/ can justify it with the cash making potential of having the best rookies/cheap options (Berry/Rowell) all loaded in my team.
Stop copying my team! Exact same midfield. even the bench is the same.

It's a really strong looking midfield but Ward on the bench seems like a waste. If we don't get more than MacDonald then it might have to do.
