Not sure why everyone is so quickly falling in love with Chris Yarran?
2 good scores do not promise riches to come.
Let's compare Yarran and S Shaw
Yarran ave 64.7, S Shaw ave 69.2.
Let's put their scores into 5 groups: 0-50, 51-65, 66-80, 81-95, 96+
Yarran: 4 / 2 / 1 / 0 / 3
Shaw: 1 / 1 / 3 / 0 / 1
Yarran: 60% of scores under 65, 30% of scores over 96
Shaw: 33% of scores under 65, 16% of scores over 96
Most people with Shaw don't seriously consider him for D7, as they shouldn't . I'm just amazed they consider Yarran a D7. There really isn't much between them, except to say Yarran might be a little more likely to produce a 96+ in the next 8 weeks. Shaw has a much easier draw and costs less.
Neither are D7!
I'll declare now that I reckon Yarran will average 90 for the rest of the season, making him a good pick for a defender at his current price, while Sam Shaw will average around the 65 mark.
In the full games Yarran has played in defence he averages a respectable 91.2 (scores 111, 77, 56, 98 and 114) after averaging 87.3 permanently playing defence last season. If you think Sam Shaw will score better then you obviously don't realise the circumstances surrounding Yarran's dire spell.
111 - Excellent game v Richmond.
77 - Extremely undervalued performance v Brisbane (was more like a 100 for mine).
56 - Poor game v Collingwood.
58 - Injured v Essendon. Was hobbling/on bench for 2nd half. Only not subbed out due to Carrazzo injury.
25 - Sub v Adelaide, replacing Murphy in second half of a blowout game.
42 - Started forward with no impact v Port.
36 - Sub v Geelong. Came on about halfway through 3rd quarter for Warnock.
30 - Started forward with no impact v WC.
98 - Okay v Hawthorn playing in defence, although I thought his score was 20pts overvalued.
114 - Best v Collingwood running off the half back line.
You could use the same argument analysing emperical numbers that Ivan Maric would not be a good pick this season. However, I used some basic logic that he would average about 90-95 this season. These moneyball kind of players are the ones that you can gain an advantage over the rest of the competition, hence are most valuable.
