Chesser maybe a round 1 chance :-

West Coast began their week with some physicality and skill work at Mineral Resources Park on Monday morning. Here’s what we saw...

Chesser On Track

Get excited West Coast fans because Campbell Chesser might not be as far off full fitness as we thought.

Chesser, 19, completed most of the session with the main group, showing no signs of an ankle injury which robbed him of his maiden AFL season.

The 2021 first-round draftee moved smoothly through a series of drills that tested not only his ankle but his strength in the contest.

Chesser had power out of the contests and showed his skills in quick ball movement drills that should put a smile on Eagles fans’ faces.

As a broader philosophical point I think it’s better to include finals scores in analysis, it provides extra data.

People can say finals is different to normal footy, but so are showdowns, Derbies, Anzac games, rivalry games, games in the wet, games where your team drastically over or underperforms. It’s still footy and should be taken as evidence of a players performance in a past season.

The only exception would be someone like Dusty who clearly set himself to play finals and cruise in the regular season. Not many players have played like that, maybe Danger will moving forward

This^ Also important to look at the roles players picked up in finals / lead up. Blicavs a classic example. Was close to the best midfielder on Grand Final day and played that role so well through the finals. So much went wrong for Sydney on GF day but one of the more ominous signs was seeing Geelong's midfield rotation of Danger, Guthrie, Blicavs and Stanley. It was like men playing boys and the centre clearances were brutal. From Rd 22 to the GF, Blicavs scored 131, 129, 72, 117 and 139.

I'm actually tempted by Blicavs as a ruck option if he plays that role. Obviously the odd down game (72 v the Pies) is a concern and he's the wrong side of 30 (if there is such a thing these days) but the ceiling is decent. The MID/RUC DPP is pretty useless other than being able to swing him to the MIDs as part of an RUC upgrade if others fire.

His age/ his role flexibility (Scott uses him in a variety of roles pending the team matchup) which in turn can lead to big fluctuations with his scoring are the negatives :-

4 scores of 66 & below are a concern for mine.

Yeah, problem with Blitz is knowing he's only an injury away from playing FB and scoring badly, so don't even have the safety that he'll just punch out a 95 average and be safe, could easily tank value and points over the first 6 weeks and not achieve the whole aim of picking him.

Serious player though.
