At this stage I’ve gone heavy in the mids (Hopper D6), that leaves Ashcroft M7 and MacKenzie M8. Thinking I will run a FDTP at M11 to loop MacKenzie, Phillips, and Baker. Any recommendations on who? Think I’ve seen Gillbee, and maybe Drury? Chesser another if not named round 1 but think I’ve seen he might be a big sub risk as they work him up? Hoping that maybe Davey won’t get picked and he could be an option.
Yep - Gilbee the obvious choice.

Think I'm ready to skip all the Blues rookies. Can't see any JS with any of them. Which means for the first time in a long time I'll have no Tigers or Blues rookies. Actually a good feeling.
That is a good call. Thinking most will pick one if named but terrible JS. The ones not picked will be there about s to get a game . Plus they will want to play Marchbank when/if fit, Kemp, Carroll and Walsh at some point.

If named will be hard not to select one being a Thursday night game with Sunday teams not final. But that is good because the masses will pick them and unlikely to be great rookies. If still getting a game round 3 pick them then.

Problem with that as most my selection relying on correction trades if it goes wrong and only got 2 maybe 3 correction trades.

Who is your R3 as probably the best place for a donut. Cincotta would be good but not many late games.

I’ve got Madden. I’ve always never been against starting both a FD and a FDTP, would like Gillbee but probably not best both donuts on same team. I like having the ability to loop rookie scores on field so Cincotta probably not ideal at all due to how early we play

Starting two zero can really hurt cash generation, especially if one or two more of your rookies fail

In 2006 it was a flat $87.2k so you could pick up top 10 picks like Murphy, Thomas, JJK, Pendles and Ryder for that price.

Thereafter the top picks were given a premium pricing so e.g. in 2010 Scully was $179.2k, Trengove was $174.2k, Dusty was $169.2k sliding down in $5k increments to $94.2k for your non-premium draftees. It wasn't limited to top 4, e.g. pick 17 Daniel Menzel was $99.2k. Being pick 21, Bastinac was $94.2k.

Guys who were already on an AFL list but hadn't debuted like Shuey, Gumbleton, Phil Davis, Robbie Tarrant, Rhys Stanley were priced at $100.2k.

Rookie draft players like Podsiadly, Crameri and our old friend Relton Roberts were $83.4k.

So in 2023 terms:

Top pick $179.2k = $207.3k in 2023
$100.2k = $123.9k in 2023
$94.2k = $117.3k in 2023
$83.4k = $102.4k in 2023
Oh yeah the old $83k player
They were the days :)
Less trades though. We needed all the help we could get !

Haven't seen much talk of Caminiti. $102k forward, virtually every Saints supporter's best 22 I've seen has him in it, even with Membrey back. With King out until after R6 he's probably safe-ish until then. JS and scoring concerns but let's face it, apart from Greene what <$123k forward rookie doesn't?
Surely Greene has scoring concerns... forward playing for my predicted wooden spooners, youngest midfield in the comp, i don't reckon the ball will be going forward a lot! I have greene on my bench but i reckon he will be prone to soring a 20 as well.

The forward rookies this season seem pretty dodgy. I'm not confident in any of them to field them with confidence, regardless of their potential to have a spike game. This season, I'm only willing to play 1 "rookie" on the field in the forward line and that being McLean at F6 who isn't really a rookie anyways. The actual forward rookies/potential cash cows are on my bench. I'm willing to pay extra to have premo players or potential premo players in the forward line even if they don't end up being season long keepers.

I think it was mentioned earlier but seems like most if not all teams I'm seeing are going with a Carlton rookie at D8 and fading two guys in particular: Cole and Goater.

Sure, they are more expensive, but is forking out an extra 70k for a player who is either best 22 (Cole) or seemingly so (Hall in the VFL again) worth it to actually make some cash over a guy who is fringe and could turn into a donut a few weeks in?

Sure, you forfeit some points early, but you're winning by about R7...

For me Hall is just having a building block after sitting out a few weeks in the preseason with the achilles soreness.

I like the security of Cole if going weaker in defence. (I am not one of them)

ATM I don't see Cowan or Cincotta playing rd1.
Holland's the only blues rookie debut rd1 is my feeling.

I'm planning without them

Probably a wise move, but who are you running with instead? Wilmot, McKenna and Cowan/Cincotta all have shaky JS and so many teams are running with 3 of them. I've been considering Michalanney instead, but have no idea if he's any better.

Would be interested to hear Crows supporters' views on Zac Taylor. Looking at him as a bit of a speculative late pick in a draft league. His junior numbers were impressive but it doesn't look like he's shot the lights out at SANFL level and didn't play in any of the pre-season games.
I love him - reminds me of a zac merret or lachie neale type - makes good decisions and seems to always have time. I think he makes it as an AFL player but likely needs an injury or two to get a crack

Wasn’t I reading that McKenna looked fat and slow and was a likely starting sub? Or did I dream that 🤔
Someone did post that, I thought it was overly harsh.

Certainly not slow but not quite as fast as he looked previously, still looks a decent option to me. Lions played both of the last year’s Grand Finalists in their preseason games so 2 of the best teams he will play against, expect him to find more ball/ more space in the real season v lesser opposition.
