Just realised that Steven has the dreaded round 12 bye so I have crossed him off my list. Still think he's great value though but unsure whether he will be a keeper this year.

This next guy is very much on my radar but first.. let's play a little game to figure out his identity..

I have averaged more than 110 on four occasions so far in my career.
I am less than 30 years old.
My star sign is Cancer.

Can this guy average more than 110 for the fifth time this year and be a good pick? Would love to hear your opinions once somebody has figured out who he is!

Jack Steven is an interesting prospect with his first half of the season. Saints only play 1 top four team (hawks) and a total of 3 games (Bombers x2) against top 7 teams from 2014 in the first 16 rounds.

When it comes to looking for value picks, Steven is a very interesting proposition this year. We saw in 2013 that he can score like a premium mid when he averaged 110.

His season last year was wrecked by the serious foot injury that he sustained in the pre-season and then a stress reaction in his thigh towards the end of the season.

From all reports, he is fully fit now and looks as though he will complete a full pre-season so I wonder whether he will be able to get back to scoring like a premium this year.

Priced at just $455,900 he is extremely good value. Surely he is worth a thought for our starting sides, isn't he?

Would be keen to hear the thoughts of Saints fans especially.

There is talk in the Saints training report today on BF that Jack Steven is injured. No specifics on the type of injury or the extent. It may be something minor but still best to keep an eye out to see how long before he returns to training.

Murphy was averaging 110 before he was subbed off early in his last round. Although you did say 110+.

I've had Dangerfield in my team for a while, i'm wondering if him not becoming the new Crows captain means anything? Are the Crows resound to him leaving and what does this mean for his SC output?

I would have picked him or Sloane to be the new Crow Capt, not sure what that means honestly - guessing one or both could be going somewhere else at the end of the season?

Judd, Franklin, Ablett and Cloke were coming off their best years and were probably due for a fall but the size of the fall with Judd, Franklin and Cloke was significant. Thomas was injured. Tippett was coming from a low supercoach base. Goddard is probably a better reflection of Dangerfield having already fallen from his peak and playing under a new coach although he was a bit older at the time than Dangerfield is now. Not a lot of data and please add to these names if you can think of someone else who has had to live with the hype of changing clubs but there does seem to be a pattern of reduced scoring.

I've been thinking the same thing. Rather than just selecting a C and VC, I'm going to appoint a "Leadership Group" of senior players and put them all in the midfield

Goddard is a perfect example as you say. He had his best year, then dropped a bit, and then dropped again in his contract year - not a good sign for Danger.

Furthermore, Judd, Cloke and Buddy had disastrous falls in their years. Although they had come off high averages, they dropped to have their worst years since becoming a premium.

I would ignore Gazza as he is very up and down between 130 and 140, and Thomas, due to injury.

The only player going against the trend is Tippet, but as you say, he wasn't previously a premium.

What about Gibbs? Wasn't last year his "contract talk" year that turned into his career year?

On Judd, after 2006 he never got anywhere near 132 again contract talks or not. As Fodzilla said, his last year at the Eagles was when he developed that chronic groin condition in 2007 and spent a lot of time up forward being managed. He's never been the same explosive player he was in 2006.

Ablett clearly was unaffected. Buddy on the other hand did appear affected be it from his own distraction or how the coach was using him.

I don't think there is a clear trend either way and like Judd I reckon if you looked into each case there would be other factors at play unrelated to contract talks.
