Is in a pitched battle with Cowan
Carlton confirmed yesterday Cowan and Cincotta are in a pitched battle for 7th defender spot. Will everyone just pick who is selected or avoid altogether. Ideally I would like a premium defender but just short of money on a $600k defender and relying on Cincotta selected so Jelly is in the mids. feels a disaster waiting to happen.

McGovern wont be fit for long.
Question is if out, does Cowan and Cincotta both play?

Which one to pick out of Stewart v Docherty v Dawson is going to drive me insane until lockout.
My preference is

Dawson - may get some attention, seems to wear it ok, kick in duties, can move to wing if getting attention or mids
Doc - had him last year, he did fade a little before getting mid role. mId role looks juicy as bonus time for him and someone always injured in the mids for Carlton. better preseason, trying to fit him in.
Stewart - somewhat nervous how soft he was post suspension. He himself said he expects to get attention. With no games in Geelong in the first few rounds, feeling we can wait. maybe famous last words.

Stewart for the bye. Doch for the consistency
.

Prefer Doc for his bye being the last one. Just because other premiums have it then, if we want best team on ground and we are fully set up by then, better to have stronger teams into early byes and trade for last few bye rounds.

He's unvaccinated. He has the purest health of anyone playing.
ha ha Dont let that debate unleash on this site, it will take up 10 pages.

A fit Marchbank could replace an injury.

Any Essendon fans or watchers care to offer some insight on the McGrath/Redman/Ridley situation? Hind out of the equation? I must admit I didn't watch much Essendon last season and only watched snippets of the game this weekend. Feels like there is the all the makings of relevant defender there but so hard to read.

Who's most likely to be playing lockdown out of Ridley/Redman/BZT? Is Mcgrath the main avenue out and whos been taking kick ins?

Much appreciated.

Hind seems to be losing a battle to D'Ambrosio for the final spot. The other 3 are all locks ahead of those two.

I think they will get in each other's way, if one can separate as the main man they'll do well but I daresay this game was a fair representation of the 3, there's probably going to be about 280-320 points available to the 3 spots which if they split it evenly would probably leave them all shy of premium levels.

I think Ridley has the best narrative of the 3 by far though, he's by far their best intercept defender and he's the best kick as well. He's also the laziest of the 3 by a mile. I do think there is some "Cripps hating Teague" aspect with Ridley also, he was great until Rutten, he was terrible under Rutten largely playing out of position, he's looked very good in the two preseason hitouts post Rutten, Cripps did the exact same under Teague and then we all saw last year.

McGrath will have lockdown roles, he's their best small defender and by far the most selfless of the group, he can score when off the leash but will have to be on the leash at times.

Redman I haven't got a read on, when he wants to he's great, when he doesn't he's terrible. He's got the potential to be the most damaging with ball but his effort wanes too much.

Ridley my personal pick, he's by far the most capable of scoring 110+ which is really the aim point for any of the three.

BZT and Laverde will get the lock down roles. Ridley will get the third tall (which was eg Owens in the praccy) or be free.

Not sure he’ll reach the heights of prior seasons imo, will have Redman and McGrath for a bit more competition for the rebound points / kickouts. His main avenue for scoring will be the intercept marks and spoils.

Still under consideration for me, but don’t think “waiting and seeing” is the worst option and he’s still at $500k so not super cheap.

Marchbank and also McGovern to come into the side, Plowman is the one that will in all likelihood go out, then the other one is out of Cowan/Cincotta.
I know Newman didn’t play but still think he is also in the mix. I would much prefer Newman one on one with Martin deep forward than Cowan/Cincotta.

Having a good look at both Nick Blakey and Darcy Moore. Have seen the stats only form the games ( did not watch myself) anyone who watched these games have a view?

Moore did take a lot of kick ins iirc. Captain can do that and looked solid in both games. Definitely an option, but at that price need to make keeper.

Stewart, Docherty or Dawson

I have room for one and struggling to find a standout also.

Clutching at straws. So I am currently influenced, to select one, based on their age.
This year, Dawson will be in an AFL player's prime age, 26yo, Docherty and Stewart will be at that AFL player's age where soft tissues injuries start to creep in, 30yo.

Or maybe I just let the 3 sided coin decide! ;)

Thanks mate, good insight. Really struggling with a D2 this year. As it feels pretty barren between 600k and Yeo for some reason.

Redman feels like the outlier that stops Ridley from getting where we need him to get to. I think if he’s guaranteed the 3rd tall then he’s potentially the pick of the litter in that 500 bracket of Cumming, Young, Daicos etc. would have loved 1 more pre season game to get another look.

Yeah agreed on that - last year we had Stewart, Dawson, Doch, Sicily and Sinclair go 110+. Whitfield likely also added from R6.

The bar could be high!

Regarding Daicos.

He is priced at $503k. Those planning on starting him, is it because you think he will be a top 6 Defender?
Alongside Stewart, Docherty, Dawson, Sicily and Sinclair?

I'm wondering if it is better to swap Daicos for one of the above and be more sure of having a top 6 Defender?
There are many tempting Mid-Pricers to choose from, to get that extra $100k.

Has to be, there is no other acceptable outcome. It's why that price range is so risky to dabble in.

Have to expect the keeper line will be similar, it's basically been ~103 for D6 and 105 for the 5 above that for the last 4 years so have to be aiming that range. DPP doesn't change the backs nearly as much as the forwards though. Last year with it at 110 was definitely the exception and I'd think it's reasonable to argue that most of the premium defenders are probably at the high end of any projected averages but also given how many 100+ guys there were, perhaps it's a shift in how the game is played.
