Defense

Yeo - Lock for mine, has to last another 10 days.
Jones - Crucial to this structure, role looked good, JS is great, he'll outscore his starting price comfortably and should make good cash on spikes.
Crozier - There's about 5 other names in this price group (can get up to Bowes), I like his scoring history over some of the others though, if he's fit I'll probably pick him.
Ginbey - Looks the goods.
McKenna - Looks sound, strong scoring history, JS the biggest question and think he gets a run at it.
Constable - Rate his role, JS solid for now but will have to perform.
Cole - JS again, when going extreme structures you need JS. Role is solid and will have good spike games, just need a couple in a month.
Chesser - There's a solid 5 names here, I like him as a slow burner but have other options.

Structure - Risk is basically all here, biggest risk to this structure is Sheezel or Phillips being must field guys over one of my rookies but I think that's not very likely (must field is like 15 points better). There's about 10 more names I think make round one, so I actually feel good about the depth of options or alternatives to mine, which is crucial.

Mids
Laird - My #1. I hate how many have jumped on him in the preseason, I liked when he was down around 12%.
Oliver (Not Neale) - I forgot to update this and can't be assed redoing the screenshot . He's too good. Neale the only other option here.
Bont - Underpriced, imo. None of his issues except durability are here this year, think 125 is very reasonable projection.
Macrae - This is the most speculative choice, I can get Neale or free cash with other names. I like Macrae but don't love it. This spot will change about 45 times in the next 10 days.
Hopper - I don't love him but he'll make cash and score points at strong value, if he fails there's a solid 3 other options I like about the same. Really I'm just defending against the remote 110 chance he presents that would wreck my season with him in every cookie cutter side.
Callaghan - I like him, I don't think he's anything special as a pick but I think he should score more consistently than other names and has a high ceiling for cash gen.
Ashcroft - Yep.
Mackenzie - I like him a lot, Hawks midfield is terrible, he should play a very good role.

Phillips - Lock for mine, risk having him on the pine against so many defenders as role was solid but expect it's a fringe role that produces very inconsistent scoring.
Fahey - I like the look of him, there's a solid amount of other D/M options here, I'm not committed to the link by any means but an extra option to cover my defenders is definitely intentional and valuable.
Baker - Will adapt if he's not there round one until then he's locked.

Structure - The only real decision is whether to cash up Hopper into something better but I think the balance with Hopper/Ziebell is better than Green type/rookie and that's basically the choice. Otherwise there's nothing noteworthy here.

Rucks

Gawn - Picked as a forward, I'm essentially backing him to average 105+ here. I can't say I love it but basically if he doesn't get FWD he'll score 110+, the 105+ with FWD is definitely not a sure thing. Does feel right having the big beautiful bearded bastard in my side though.
Marshall - Defensive pick, I'm not risking a guy I like doing a Sicily on me again. Ultimately he's value and could be the #1 ruck, the durability risk and slight coach related concerns don't trump that given all the other rucks have durability problems and bigger other issues.

Rat - I hate giving up cash generation, I always lose points looping anyway, this is a perfect storm. Absolute worst case I have 72k I can find from this downgrade. (nekminnit he loses cash).

Structure - Not much here, it will be Marshall +1, I'm down to Gawn, Darcy, Witts and English, Gawn the priciest so any change here helps elsewhere.

Forwards

Dunkley - Lock.
Coniglio - The 4th picked of the 4 but really durability my only concern on this pick.
Rozee - Lock. Expecting him to push 110 this year. Shame so many are on him!
Taranto - Defensive but do rate his chances this year. He's capable of going 110+, he should push towards 105. Durability is an issue but not starting him is far more likely to cause me issues than starting him.
Ziebell - He averaged 108 last time he played this role, he was even bigger than that before Hall. I don't know what they're going to do but if he's in defense he's going to push 95+ and has genuinely good keeper chances and range. That he'll get DPP with my structure is also extremely valuable. I'm actually looking at him more as a D6 keeper than F6 as I'll want to dabble with the DPP guys and already have 5 keeper forwards without him.

McLean - I think he's the best forward rookie, I don't think he's great.
Sheezel - He's the next best, if he's playing defense he'll be the best. I don't think either is much better than my D6 though.
Greene - Terrible team but he's got more ways to score than the small forwards and he's more advanced than most. I've already budgeted the trade for getting this wrong

Structure - I still hate how heavy I am, Gawn only makes that worse but I'm also confident that all 5 of my starters score at premium levels post DPP, they're all just going in reverse of the DPP, they're forwards playing mids, the mids who get forward will do the same. I'm definitely watching for Petracca as a must have forward. This is an unusually bad group for durability for me but there's too much value in 4 guys playing pretty pure midfield roles that have all demonstrated the ability to go 110+ in those roles.

I want Gulden, I want Gulden to succeed, I can't trust Horse, if you look up trust issues in a dictionary it's me glaring at Horse for a decade straight and him just laughing back. He's that kid you yell at to not stick his finger in the toaster and he just stands there with his finger in the toaster laughing at you hysterically.
I like the structure that is light on down back this season. There appears to be plenty of undrpriced forwards who could end up premiums and obcious in hindsight.
Benches are looking very solid.
An6bide if Tomahawk coming back early will have Scott move the magnets and see Esav out?

Sava always a chance to get dropped, worst case really is you have the loophole and 70k whenever you need it. Given he could just as easily make 150k quickfire I think it's worth it.

D : Stewart, Doch, Dawson
Yeo, Jones, Constable (wilmot, cincotta)
M : Laird, Tom Green, Hopper, Flanders
Ashcroft, McKenzie, Ginbey, Baker
(Sinn, Davey, Drury)
R : Darcy, Marshall (Madden)
F : Dunkley, Coniglio, Rozee
Taranto, Gulden, Bruhn (ratugolea, Greene)

It looks weird, but i see 12 keepers and 2 potential in Yeo and Bruhn and Ruck Cover.

Whats left in the bank, potential problems with Cincotta and Dury not getting cash.? Flanders to Callaghan saves a bit of coin.

Or just reajust RD3 Use 2 trades and your boost to sort out you cows on the bench.?

Cash left is $1,900 so nothing basically
Another 100,000 would be nice but then you start picking more things
Thinking I could downgrade laird but he’s sort of my perma captain pick maybe just go all out and go green to Callaghan and use my 300k to do some rookie upgrades and Darcy-Gawn

I look at it and wonder if you couldn’t choose between all the forwards and then talked yourself into the $200k and below defender options.
I’d ask the tough question is Cogs (say) worth that much to fit him in?
You could drop him, start Sheezel and put Dawson into D1 (take out Crozier) which I think will save you being forced to take a bad rookie score in defence each week.
I know not much about Crozier. Was he your last picked because you only had that much money left?
I feel like you’ve ended up with too much cash to spend and it’s landed on your bench and up forward.
I’d support it more if I could see a couple of really strong scorers for their price from D2-D6 but I’m kinda seeing 50-70 and what if they all go for 50 one round?

Still tinkering, but this is where I currently sit with $100k in the bank to make adjustments. I know that there is some value on offer down back but I feel a little more confident in picking a couple of top line scorers than I do in the mids where I am running light taking a punt on LDU and Green to take another step. Ruck still feels like a lottery from 4 or 5 potential picks. Forward line feels like the place to run a bit more mid price madness.

Richmond actually play a better style for his game style. You'll notice that Dustin Martin is also one of the leaders in all those categories but they set up for that chaos kick forward much better than GWS who always played for leading forward targets and short hit-up play. I think his hack it at all costs approach will score more favourably because Richmond will already be setup for it and turning a lot of those clangers into ineffective will basically even his DT/SC ratio.

Also worth noting that in 2021 he averaged 102 until he went forward late in the season, that's most likely going to be an acceptable F6 range. That 2019 season he was averaging 108 at the bye, after the bye is when Toby Greene and Zac Williams went on ball and forced him out, his DT average also dropped off 10ppg in that period.

Basically the last time he played as a pure first choice midfielder he sustained keeper numbers on raw accumulation. If he does score better on the ratio front then he could definitely push towards 115 range and end seasons.

I just don't think the reward on not picking a guy like him is worth it. He's in 90% of teams that matter and realistically injury is the only strong reason he wont push towards 105 range. You're just spotting everyone a bargain keeper choice to take risk on your own unique one. What's the best case here with not picking him?
I don't know where to find 2019 CBA's but before the bye in 2019 Taranto averaged 4.9 clearances and had 16 scoring shots in 13 games. After the bye his clearances increased to 5.5 a game and scoring shots decreased to 6 scoring shots from 9 games.... Are you sure he moved fwd after the bye? Best case in not picking him is other options. I think Coniglio, Butters, rozee, gulden, dunkley are all options along with taranto. I guess the best case in not picking him is Taranto goes 102 whilst Cogs, butters, rozzee, dunkley fo 110+. Impossible to predict really. I think Dunkley is the only must have of those 6. I don't think its an absolute given that Taranto outscores butters rozzee and cogs. I see Butters as much more of a supercoacher and Taranto much more of a fantasy player. If Taranto and Butters average the same amount of disposals butters outscores him by 10 IMO, although i do think Taranto will get bigger numbers. I agree with your last point re 90% ownership so it is risky to fade him for sure.

Definitely not set but so far it's like this:

Stewart Docherty Yeo L.Jones Ginbey McKenna, Constable and Wilmot
Oliver Bontempelli Green DeGoey Hopper Callaghan Ashcroft McKenzie, Bytel Baker Cincotta
Marshall Cameron, Ratagolea
Dunkley Rozee Taranto Gulden Flanders Sneezel, Greene and Davey

Any thoughts would be so welcome it's not even funny.

If they all go for 50 then they all provided value, not as much as I'd like, but value none the less and are on the path to making cash. They all outperformed Dawson if he scored 110 for comparison.

5 of the 7 have averaged at least 68 in a season before, so I feel pretty good on them pushing towards that level. I had 3 rookies last year of my starting 12 that his 70+ and I did a good job on the rookies.

I think people have really unrealistic expectation of rookie scoring, I like Sheezel and Phillips but I don't see either as likely to average 70+.

I also just don't see any value in the defender premiums, I think they're all good picks but they've got no value, so when I can get Bont/Macrae/Dunkley/Coniglio/Rozee/Taranto instead of them who I think all present 10+ points of value, I'm going to chase that. 4 of the 5 are priced at career highs and I just don't really see what any of them can do to go substantially higher, Doch has the best case, imo, but it's nowhere near as good as the aforementioned group, among many others.

End of the day though, rookies dictate structures and I quite simply prefer the back rookies over the forward and mid rookies this year, I really like to pick guys that I've seen average what they need to average over guessing on unknown quantities. Especially given I'm paying less for half those known quantities than the rookies anyway.

I like most of it, just not the Ratugolea and Degoey picks, reckon you could just go Madden as loophole and pick a better premo in the mids. Degoey's just all over the place with his scoring and his life.

The rookies are ok it’s just that from my past experience when I’ve strung them out on a single line I’ve felt it compromises my upgrade process in that in your case you’ve forced yourself into predominantly defender upgrades. Whereas if it’s more evenly spread across lines you can better pick the upgrade to the premium that’s dropped in price. You don’t have to only look at defenders for example.
I think your strategy would be less risky if 2 of your def rookies looked capable of 85 plus,
With rookies available on all lines it feels to me like an unnecessary risk.
Then in terms of the * 10 value while I agree with you we do have to pick some players that don’t present that as you have with Laird, Dunkley, Gawn, Oliver. I think Dawson, Doch or Stewart are similar picks on their line.
Just asking the hard questions 😊 crozier in particular stands out to me. I’ve not seen him in a single other side. Might have missed him

The main reason I'm not going for it myself is I'm reasonably heavy on mid pricers expecting to make significant corrections in round 3, and for that to work I want to be rock solid in my premiums. That and I suspect more forward spots are going to be available with DPP!

Hoping that this is what I can head into the season with.
Still have 9 of the 12 premos I had back then so haven't been swayed too much.

Docherty has been in out and depending on structure, hoping he spends more time back than in the middle, prefer him getting free points from kick ins.
Dawson also a mainstay, dropped out a few times when experimenting with a very skinny backline, but always found his way back.
Yeo has been in 100% of my teams, just love him as a player, owned him for the 108ppg years, hope he can work out as a pick, if not, he's easy to flick to one of the many midprice options available this year.

When I looked through Laird's numbers since playing as a full-time mid I paid up, just doesn't drop really poor scores, rather pay a bit overs from the jump than have to find a way to get him in.
Oliver my 2nd picked player, not worried about the preseason role change chat, his early draw is just too good, rounds 4-9 look as good a run an inside pig like him could dream of.
Bulldogs additions make Bont more enticing. On him for the Brownlow at $19s.
Tom Green can be the man. Just needs to be given the keys by Kingsley. Preseason has been full of ticks.
Hopper probably the safest midprice option, either an early stepping stone, or a long hold until his bye for an easy flip to a big premium.

I love Sean Darcy, now that there's a somewhat safe R3 option I am more than happy to ride this rollercoaster again.
Considered going against Marshall because I don't have high hopes for the Saints this year, but he scored too well on the weekend, with no 2nd ruck playing, worried that Ross the Boss could ruin the pick at any time, but have to take the plunge with the 50% ownership.

Don't think I need to say anything about Dunkley.
Have seen a lot jump off Cogs this week but I'll be sticking with him, think the GWS draw is very friendly and can see him and Green running the show.
Rozee just a great player with great upside.
Taranto hasn't budged either, hasn't set a foot wrong all preseason, looked great in both hit outs.

My structure does rely on 2 102k rookies which isn't ideal, 1 being a D/M loop at M11. I always take a floating donut, I need the VC/C loop from round 1, and think that I can get the best shot at rookie roulette by looping Phillips and Baker at M8 early days.
Need Cincotta to get the round 1 gig ahead of Cowan or I'll have to make a few changes.

Solid team IMO, one of the best I've seen

Love it - Greene about the only question mark at F6 but he has looked good. Not sure on the JS of Sturt with Walters/ Frederick to return but they are only minor worries, well done 👍

Yep, F6 definitely the weak point.
Even if I went Cogs down to Gulden, I wouldn't be able to afford a Sam Flanders.

I've looked over Hawks and Bombers draws, reckon I'll be able to field at least 1 of Green or Davey for the first 6 weeks, and hope they put up a decent score in winnable games.

Happy to replace Sturt with a Chandler or Stone type, basically just anyone that gets a green light come round 1 haha

Post pre-season games team.

Defenders - Docherty is locked in and am constantly flipping between Stewart and Dawson for the last spot. Have considered moving that down to a Cumming or Bailey Dale which would allow Neale to come in for Cripps but just not sold on either selections. Think they both have too much competition for points in their backlines. Don't mind Crozier as an option and will look to shuffle the decks if the injury isn't too bad.

Midfielders - Laird and Bont my captaincy options with Green as my value premo. Love watching Cripps play and liked the look of him in the first practice game and think he is set for a big year again. Hopper vs Callaghan for that M5 spot and have gone with Hopper being in the more potentially successful side and has that inside mid role where as Callaghan playing a wing role in a potential bottom 10 side means I'll fade him for now. Want Phillips and Mackenzie on ground so will only take one of Hopper or Callaghan.

Rucks - Marshall the easy pick and Darcy looks primed for the big breakout and is at that perfect age of when Grundy and Gawn broke out as well.

Forwards - First three are pretty vanilla and banking on Gulden getting the right role and surely that game propels him ahead of Rowbottom and Papley. Went at 86 last year with barely any CBAs so plenty of upside there. Will watch the Sydney press conferences closely over the next few weeks. Flanders gets in there as think he will score ok with that high HF role at that price. F6 clearly an issue with McLean's poor role but that position will change multiple times between now and round 1.

Another great team - I can see this is going to be a tough season. Nice work.
