Defenders - Docherty hasn't really moved all preseason so happy to lock him in. Ridley has replaced Daicos after the preseason games - 128 with minimal kick ins (2) and 0/3 free kicks makes me believe in the pick. Rest of the line is pretty cookie cutter.

Midfield - I think this line is also fairly cookie cutter except for De Goey who isn't exactly locked, I may chicken out and go DeGoey/Worpel to a premium/rookie. It could be my Black & White goggles but I'm essentially backing De Goey to have a Petracca type breakout year. He went at 110 post bye in 2021 and then had everything go wrong last year. He finally looks fit, mature and hopefully his troubles are behind him. I don't buy the idea that the Pies are a low possession side, we just got absolutely smashed in the midfield last year and had to get really good at rebounding on the back of our excellent defence. With Titch coming in and a fit Adams & De Goey, I think we can be a better balanced side this year. Has never averaged more than 21 disposals in a season but had 31 from 69% TOG against the Hawks thanks to Titch handing them to him on a silver platter. Lots of easy exit strategies at his price if it doesn't work out.

Rucks - Marshall is a lock and English seems like as good of a punt as anyone else. Will pay up for Ratugolea to o***et some of the durability concern.

Forwards - Pretty cookie cutter. Fading Fyfe with his high ownership and early draw is a bit scary but I'm hoping Flanders can make up for it in the long run.

Money is tight but I can always move Ratugolea to F7 and get Madden R3. I'm indifferent to starting with a loophole or not, if I'd just left the C on Laird last year I would have done better.

Thought I'd put together a side with all non-rookie selections below 10% ownership. Didn't spend much time at all on this, but you can still get a decent side. I'm sure you can put together better than this, this is just an example of what is possible.

This looks like one of those teams that we make at the end of the year that would have won the whole comp with 0 trades made.

Posted my first team on here on the 24th of Jan (page 2).
Hoping that this is what I can head into the season with.
Still have 9 of the 12 premos I had back then so haven't been swayed too much.

Docherty has been in out and depending on structure, hoping he spends more time back than in the middle, prefer him getting free points from kick ins.
Dawson also a mainstay, dropped out a few times when experimenting with a very skinny backline, but always found his way back.
Yeo has been in 100% of my teams, just love him as a player, owned him for the 108ppg years, hope he can work out as a pick, if not, he's easy to flick to one of the many midprice options available this year.

When I looked through Laird's numbers since playing as a full-time mid I paid up, just doesn't drop really poor scores, rather pay a bit overs from the jump than have to find a way to get him in.
Oliver my 2nd picked player, not worried about the preseason role change chat, his early draw is just too good, rounds 4-9 look as good a run an inside pig like him could dream of.
Bulldogs additions make Bont more enticing. On him for the Brownlow at $19s.
Tom Green can be the man. Just needs to be given the keys by Kingsley. Preseason has been full of ticks.
Hopper probably the safest midprice option, either an early stepping stone, or a long hold until his bye for an easy flip to a big premium.

I love Sean Darcy, now that there's a somewhat safe R3 option I am more than happy to ride this rollercoaster again.
Considered going against Marshall because I don't have high hopes for the Saints this year, but he scored too well on the weekend, with no 2nd ruck playing, worried that Ross the Boss could ruin the pick at any time, but have to take the plunge with the 50% ownership.

Don't think I need to say anything about Dunkley.
Have seen a lot jump off Cogs this week but I'll be sticking with him, think the GWS draw is very friendly and can see him and Green running the show.
Rozee just a great player with great upside.
Taranto hasn't budged either, hasn't set a foot wrong all preseason, looked great in both hit outs.

My structure does rely on 2 102k rookies which isn't ideal, 1 being a D/M loop at M11. I always take a floating donut, I need the VC/C loop from round 1, and think that I can get the best shot at rookie roulette by looping Phillips and Baker at M8 early days.
Need Cincotta to get the round 1 gig ahead of Cowan or I'll have to make a few changes.
I wonder if you need Sheezel as one of your FWD rookies and how would you fund that either now or as a correction? Oliver down to say Parish?

That's basically a team I would make most years, so I really like it. I'd probably prefer to swap Gilbee with Madden and use Rat as F6/R3 though.

Has anyone any ideas with this team? $25.1K in the bank.

Vulnerable to some low on field scores at F5/F6, as I'm sure you're conscious of.
I think 1 of them is okay to run the gauntlet on, let's say Ratugolea, which means you'd need to sure up F6.
I'd try get up to a Ziebell/Fyfe type if you can.
Multiple ways you can do that, depending on your preferences. Personally, I would go Green down to Bruhn and then Sturt up to Ziebell. Few other ways you could do it but would prefer to keep the genuine uber premo's as they are rather than downgrading them, get rid of the speculative Green instead.

Fairly standard backline. Yeo a little safer than Day or Jones. Temped with Daicos if I could get a 3rd premium in there. But I can’t …

Midfield went with one set and forget in Laird. And rolling the dice a little as a POD with 4 potential break out players. Hope at least two can become Uber premiums. Also expensive rookies and a loophole player.

Went Gawn. Still the best ruck in the league and seems he will get 60-65% ruck time. Not that dissimilar to last year. Marshall seems a no brainer.

Forwards : basically 4 premiums and again expensive rookies. Gulden surely breaks out. Taranto seems to have more midfield time so should average 100.

Structure: I have a 2/4/2/3 premium setup. I can’t see me going 12 premiums with the amount of good MP options on offer.
I have 2 MP on the DEF, MID, and FWD lines. Gives the team a lot of balance I feel and should be easy enough to correction trade out of it if things go pear-shaped.
I have a 2/2/0/1 rookie setup on field. I’m pretty comfortable fielding all of these guys as well as McKenna and Phillips.
My VC/C will be Laird and Bont. Using Madden as a loop, I can use this combo for the first 6 rounds. Dunkley and Steele may also be used as VC options.

Players:

Defence:
Docherty: I believe he’s D1 this year. With a bit of midfield time I think he’ll average around the same as last year, maybe a bit higher.
Dawson: Should finish top 6 again. I love his consistency which makes it harder for others to jump on him. I see a similar average to last season.
Yeo: I haven’t had a team without him. Could average 105+ IF he stays fit. Potential keeper.
Crozier: Someone who has only come onto the scene recently. I think he has 80 in him. He averaged 79, 75, 76 from 2018-2020. He’s been taking a few kick ins in match sims and the preseason game. JS may be a bit iffy but I personally think he’ll be fine, especially with the Duryea injury.
Ginbey: Lock. 99SC from 56% TOG by a rookie. Enough said.
Constable- : JS may be an issue when Powell and Weller are back. His scoring power is awesome though. Taking kick ins a bit of a bonus too. Should have no problem making 150k if he stays in the team.
McKenna: Should score decently if selected. He’s exactly what Brisbane need so I think plays. Can be played on field too if required.
Wilmot: Same as McKenna pretty much. Think his chances of playing are a bit slimmer than McKenna but I also think he’s there Round 1.

Midfield:
Laird: Absolute gun. I hope his ownership stops rising, I liked it when it was only 10%. Just doesn’t have a bad game which makes him extremely hard to upgrade to.
Bont: Lock. Shouldn’t be required up forward anymore with the amount of key forwards they have now. He’s also a CD love child. My Brownlow tip.
Steele: I’m a little concerned over his fitness so he’s probably the mid premo that first makes way. Obviously underpriced though and could go back to the 120 days. Bit of FOMO here.
Green: I’m not as confident on him as some others but definitely has top 8 potential. He has the Round 15 bye so I can trade him out then if he’s not performing at keeper levels. He’ll be an Uber premo in 3 years…
Hopper: Lock. All he needs to do is average 95 which he should do with ease. Ownership is falling to which I like to see.
Callaghan: I love this pick. I honestly can see him going at 100 if he gets a few CBA’s. If not, he may only be 80+ which is more than enough for the price.
Ashcroft: Lock. That’s it…
Mackenzie: Really liked what I saw in the preseason game. Should have good JS in that Hawks side. Think he goes 70-75. Hopefully doesn’t turn out like Ward :ROFLMAO:
Phillips: Will still score decently despite his score in the preseason. Sits at M9 currently but may end up as M8 next week. He’s getting CBA’s so you would think his floor would be pretty good.
Baker: Solid scoring potential but not the greatest JS. The statement saying he wasn’t going to play the preseason game before Duryea got injured doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence. But fair to say he took his chance when he came on. You have to pick him I think, real shortage of bench mid rookies.
Cincotta: Hoping he plays over Cowan and I think he does. Gets in on his age and experience in senior football. Probably doesn’t score great but only needs to go at 50 odd priced at 102k. Although if he’s only scoring 50’s he’ll probably get dropped. I’m not too sure who’s the better player at actually defending out of him or Cowan though. Some insight would be appreciated.

Rucks:
Darcy: Jackson doesn’t affect him too much I don’t think. Freo’s midfield has got more depth now which benefits him. Brayshaw, Brodie, Serong, O’Meara and even Fyfe at the FWD stoppages. Same bye as Marshall a bit of a problem.
Marshall: Lock. Underpriced for what he can do. Hopefully Campbell doesn’t play.
Madden: Loop.

Forward:
Dunkley: Lock.
Rozee: May take the next step, just need Port to give him a good opportunity. Not that confident on him but like him over Cogs/Gulden.
Taranto: Lock. Had him in my team all preseason. Top 6 this year. If he fixes up his kicking he could be a top 8 mid :ROFLMAO:.
Ziebell: Love his role. Very similar to 2021, just a little worse. Would be handy if Clarko kept Hall in the 2’s. 95-100.
Flanders: He has proved he doesn’t need CBA’s to score. He just got 30 touches playing mainly HFF/Wing (6 CBA’s). Don’t really get why some people aren’t getting him because ‘Touk is coming back’… he’s not getting CBA’s anyway so doesn’t affect him much at all.
McLean: Lock. Proven scoring history. He’s too good of a player to be averaging <65 even with the terrible role he has. Only an injury or two away from getting CBA’s I think. Treloar’s bound to do a hammy in the first 6 weeks right lol.
Greene: Rock solid JS. Should see a few spike games. Think you have to take him with the lack of options.
Davey: Should have decent scoring. JS not great but hopefully he can prove himself in the first few games to cement a spot in the best 22. Sub risk is a worry.

Feedback, good or bad, is welcome.

I’m not picking Gulden personally at this stage.

He was not in consideration for my team before today so I’m going to back in my research and not be reactive to a good preseason game. The only way I see that changing is if there are some reports from the coaching staff confirming more mid time.

Potential correction trade.

Just when I thought teams would be vastly different this year, it seems like most are ending up with the same structure and mostly the same premiums.

Untitled.png

Here's where I'm at.

Question marks on Callaghan and Ziebell. Could easily end up with Hopper and Sheezel/McLean instead. No McKenna right now, not convinced on his JS (I'm seeing a few Brisbane fans leave him out of their 22) and scoring output is worth the extra $40k over other rookies. Rest of the team is pretty much settled bar Macrae vs. Bont.

The rookies and the midpricers are basically the only differences that I'm seeing across most sides and even those aren't as fun as I was hoping.

Problem is there's basically 5 forwards everyone is squeezing into 4 spots, Marshall is R2 for all and the rookie mids are so limited that structures are falling into that form. There only seems to be a few midfield options also, almost wish that Bont/Laird/Green had bad games to really throw the cats among the pigeons!

Draft 3 - Edging closer
Taken a while to get here. Been another intriguing preseason. Probably the same as last year, but it did feel like every match on the weekend changed the team that little bit to where it currently stands. I've tried out every conceivable structure to try to be that little bit different. From a deep defensive line to R2golea. Nothing has really sat well. This feels about as good as it can get for me at the moment.

Screen Shot 2023-03-06 at 9.31.33 pm.png
Bank: $7,600

DEF:
Docherty - Think he's the safest of the pay up options. Preseason form really good.
Ridley - Can he get back to the 2020 scoring? I'd even take the 2021 scoring to be honest.
Yeo - Really got no reason not to pick him. Not going to try to outwit the field here. Has a trend of throwing up the odd 50. Also has a trend for throwing up a lot of 100's when the body was right. The 50's hurt a lot more when his price started with a 5, not a 3.
Jones - Rock solid JS. Hopefully the intercept game can fire from the get go.
Crozier - Bit of a wildcard choice. Like many have alluded, has the scoring history of 3 straight season around that mid-high 70 mark. JS may be an issue.
Ginbey - Should be the lock of all locks.
McKenna - Don't love the pick. Like him more than Wilmot though, hence he is in. I'd call him a pure defensive pick in my team.
Cincotta - Let's hope he get's picked. Not enough $ to get to Cowan.

Structure - Crozier and Cincotta may cause issues. I don't mind rolling off Crozier to Cole if I have to. He's the next in line for me. Cincotta can then push up to Cowan if required. Trying to bat a bit deeper with more premium rookies given the lack of depth in my more premium choices.

MID:
Laird - C
Bont - VC
Green - Breakout
Ash - Important for my structure in that I fully expect him to become a defender and that's the area that I am weakest. Have strongly considered Setterfield for this position. At times have floated both, but it feels like too much risk.
Hopper - Will be at the coalface for the Tigers. I'm not going to get cute here.
Ashcroft - Gun rookie
Mackenzie - The Hawks look like they have a beauty here. Happy to have him on field.
Constable - Role looks good. JS looks above average to begin. Preseason say's he's a must. Has room to grow. Posted a really nice score with many turnovers on the weekend. He's been a bit of a turnover merchant in the past, but a couple of cleaner games should get the price going north quick.
McLean - Defensive pick. Another I dislike, but he does have the potential to hurt at his ownership.
Phillips - Role behind the more experienced mids means he's probably more a bench option to begin with.
Baker - Nice to get that cheap rookie have a decent outing. We sure needed it and it solidifies confidence in picking him.

Structure - Like the DP swings that Constable and McLean provide. I'm not batting deep here, and could possibly lose Ash to the backline after 6 rounds so I'm going to need to be savvy in upgrade choices. Oliver has barely been seen in drafts I have put together lately. Played around with Parish pre him getting tagged by Bytel. Nothing has stuck and have really only felt comfortable on those 3 pay up mids for majority of the preseason.

RUC:
Darcy - Form has been good. Don't have money for the other 2 big guns, but feel good about Darcy. He's a bit of a favourite of mine after 2021.
Marshall - Brave to go without him given his ownership.
Madden - Donut

Structure - Happy enough with this. If we can get Gawn as a FWD backup at some stage that would be nice for these 2.

FWD:
Dunkley - 3rd C/VC choice in the side.
Rozee - I don't love him, but he's in. On the fence that I'm probably being a little defensive, but who else do you pick and who has a better role?
Taranto - Definitely my number 2 premium choice. Haven't tried to out think this one.
Gulden - On the radar after the impressive game the other night.
Bruhn - Strong preseason. Prefer his role to Fyfe's.
Flanders - Been in form for a while now. 30 off HF on the weekend after he was closing out 2022 with VFL 30-40's.
Sheezel - Paying up for extra security. The kid may have many roles that could offer value so happy to go with him.
Greene - Think he's a really solid choice. JS looks solid. Don't see any reason why he can't keep his spot when Lewis comes back.

Structure - Stongest line by far. Have the DP open to cover changing up the midfield. Bench looks solid.

Overall structure - By my count it's kind of like a 9.5 premium team in that I would be hoping one of Ridley or Gulden can take the step up on their lines to push it to or beyond 10. Tried to be as flexible as possible with DP and depth. Hopefully come lockout the only thing I really have to deal with is the Crozier and Cincotta issue if those become a thing. Fully understand there will be question marks on parts of the structure and a mid priced option like Ash, but it's good for me and that's what matters. Copping a couple of defensive picks because you sort of have to play the game like that to a degree imo, especially with rookies that are highly owned. Couldn't get Callaghan in. Can't have them all.
