So based on this statement, any one of the 23 name (all but emergency players) will become the tactical sub, likely a bench player? Am I misinterpreting that?
That is my understanding. When the AFL announced it, they never said anything about the sub coming from the bench, although some media did run with that.

Players move from the 18 to the bench all the time between initial teams getting named and final teams an hour before so I expect the clubs have free reign.

Obviously I hope I am wrong but that statement on the Dees page kind of backs it up

This is what I read. Seems to be confusion but not sure where from.

The bench isn't locked until the official teamsheets are done. A player named earlier in the week, as being in the starting 18 is free to be moved to the bench before teamsheets. Now that he is on the bench, he can become sub.
Won't happen often, but will happen at some stage.

So how do Sunday games work. I thought (and perhaps wrongly) last year that the players named on the Thursday as on field were playing and the four bench players and sub were picked on Friday (or was it Saturday) from the names on the listed extended bench. So now is it a case for a Sunday game we have no idea who is playing until one hour before the game?

How much weight do we place on Round 0 and do greatly readjust predicted averages in either direction off the back of one match. Only stays in the price cycle for one match as well. Is there a reason they were not considered prior and what arbitrary number will force ownership movements, restructures, etc?

Last year the subs came from the emergencies (named Thurs for Fri/Sat games & Friday for Sunday games)

This year sub will come from the 23 (or the 5 man bench if we are lucky ;) ) so we will get the 23 for Sunday games on Friday evenings like last year.

Pretty sure that was always the case, just some clubs were friendly, and gave an early heads up on the sub.

Fullarton named as EMG.

I have it on very good authority that he was preferred to Schache as the fwd/ruck to assist Gawn before the hammy injury pre-season so would not be surprised if he makes his Melbourne debut sooner rather than later. Possibly as early as round 1 depending on how Schache performs tomorrow night.

Could be a decent pick and a chance of getting handy FWD/RUC status.

Basically it I worse. We tell the AFL we don't like the sub, they feel for the guy who goes from best 22, to now dropped, to being the sub.

To compensate, they let them name a best 23 so no one is dropped and now we dont know who the sub is till just before the game.

Going to make rookie roulette even harder.

Charlie Spargo named on field. The sub rule is going to bite supercoach teams this year.
Pickett out. Spargo’s F50 pressure crucial from the opening bounce tomorrow night.

Not to mention he’s one of the best kicks into the F50 and was absolutely flying on the track prior to his minor achilles complaint.

I'm not full of confidence about billings or Roberts (Sydney). Dodging sub players is going to be tricky.
