Wouldn't you make your flex as your designated donut for looping?
You don't get cover for your flex meaning you are basically locking in 11 on field vs other teams that can run 12 on field (plus loops) and field the strongest best 11.
I'm still wrapping my ahead around it all, but I think the Flex spot might allow a dedicated donut on the bat and bowl lines meaning you can essentially run a loop on both each round without sacrificing cash gen.

Perfect timing with AFLW ending this weekend. Love the new "flex" player, basically like an extra bench player. Can avoid a disaster each round. Will be interesting to see how every uses it. Two boosts, which was the same as last year.

My understanding of it... it's almost basically more like an extra bench spot rather than an onfield spot but of course you'd put the player you want there to be 100% playing as there's no emergency for that flex spot.

You don’t get your AE in that spot. I think you’ll just want to have someone in the first game of the round in that spot.
That was my first thought - but I think ultimately, we'll use that spot to field an extra all rounder or what would have been our best loop option last year. It's essentially a free throw at a loop, and means we can set things up to loop off more risky players.

Does sort of allow teams to run 1 spot deeper on the bat or bowl (or heaven forbid, keeper) lines as well which can be handy when there are good cash gen options that are single position only.

Just reading up on the flex spot in regards to scoring :-

Points scored by your team each round are based on the performance of your "Best 11 players" from your starting line-up of 12 (including your Flex player selection), including up to 3 selected emergencies to replace up to 3 players on your starting line-up (in matching positions only as selected on your squad), who don't play that round. The remaining players on your bench don't add points towards your team. Note that there is NO emergency cover for your selected Flex player.

I am thinking someone like Stoinis (84K Bat/Bowl) might be a good flex option round 1 with the stars on the double.

I wonder if they add this flex rule next year for AFL SC seeing as we do have 23 players in actual teams. Could be a best 22 of best 23 players. Just a thought.
I would be in favour as well. It helps with one of the most soul destroying aspects of SC when you have an on field player go off earlier injured or subbed.

I think that would be a great idea - so often a player goes down early/gets subbed etc so coaches that have depth in their squad would then get rewarded. We all know their a real luck element involved in SC, introducing a flex rule would help reduce it slightly for those than have planned ahead.

Love that they’ve added this flex option! Adds more strategy to the game for serious players (most of us here) with another element to tackle. Requires more skill and taking out the lowest score means bad luck is less damaging. Good to see they’re willing to make changes and adapt the game to give it a fresh twist.

As mentioned in posts above, I’d also love to see AFL SC take a similar approach. Feel as though it would play an even bigger role in that format to take out injury affected scores. Also makes sense in relating the fantasy game to the real game with substitutes.

The only thing I don’t like about this is the salary cap remaining the same. Makes sense to raise it a bit, even if only 100k or so.

Riskiest pick is probably Finn Allen but I think he could be a huge asset for the scorchers opening the batting, fast & bouncy surface at Optus could suit him nicely/ high scoring ground for BBL games historically.

Here is his bio:-

Allen will call Optus Stadium home for the next two seasons, after becoming the Scorchers first BBL pre-signing under new league rules which allows franchises to secure an international player before the Draft.

The 25-year-old is among the most destructive opening batters on the planet, renowned for attacking from ball one and sustaining his scoring rate.

This much was evident when Allen hammered 42 from 16 deliveries during the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the SCG, taking down the vaunted pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood on their home ground.

Earlier this year, Allen struck New Zealand’s highest individual T20I score and crushed the national record for the most sixes in a T20I innings, clearing the ropes 16 times during his 62-ball 137 against Pakistan.

His T20I strike rate of 158.69 is the highest of any New Zealand cricketer and seventh all-time among Test-playing nations. Factoring all professional T20 cricket, Allen’s strike rate climbs to 168.60 – a figure topped only by Jamaican superstar Andre Russell (minimum 1000 T20 runs).
A reliable outfielder with wicketkeeping experience, Allen is also capable of deputising for gloveman Josh Inglis if required.

Don't particularly understand why they haven't raised the cap alongside the extra player but we'll see how it plays out throughout the season.

Initial thoughts is its going to be very hard to fit 17 players into a 2M Cap.
It's not going to be as bad as you think because all the prices seem to be scaled down to compensate - the old 62.5k is 58.5k now and 42k is now 39.5k.

No matter how you look at it though, Zampa at 80k with a first round double is very appealing...

Nice looking side

One thing though Zampa on the bench (SS play MR) , Richardson & Webster lock out first game so you won't get Zampa's score
