Zimbabwe in danger of missing Men’s T20 World Cup after historic loss to Uganda
Zimbabwe’s chances of qualifying for next year’s Men’s T20 World Cup have taken a massive blow after the African nation suffered a shock five-wicket loss to Uganda in Windhoek on Sunday.
Uganda, playing its first Men’s T20I against a full member nation, chased the 137-run target with five balls to spare at United Ground, leaving Zimbabwe reeling at fourth on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier standings.
Zimbabwe will now need other results to go their way for any chance of qualifying for next year’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States of America. The only Test-playing nation competing in the tournament, Zimbabwe also lost its opener against hosts Namibia, a result coach Dave Houghton called “embarrassingly bad”.
Talk of moving Marnus to opener (to fit Green in) when Warner retires is gaining momentum
So move Marnus & Smith away from their favoured/preferred spots for Green who is averaging 33.59 (24 Tests)
Personally think Green fights it out with Bison and waits for Smudge to retire to get his chance @ 4.
Somehow needs to stop playing white ball cricket and get a solid Shield season under his belt and then go and play country cricket (won't happen though)
Might need to send some of these guys to Zimbabwe and play Logan Cup to get some red ball games into them over the Summer
Khawaja
Labuschagne 🤔
Smith 🤔
Green
Head
Marsh
What happens when Bison breaks ? Move them all around again for Bancroft/Harris/Renshaw ?
How long before Khawaja retires ? Do they then bring in (finally) one of Bancroft/Harris/Renshaw or are they (hoping) waiting Pucovski can get a full Shield season under his belt ?
And yes the Maxi stories for the Sri Lanka (2025) tour have started.
Moving Marnus from number 3 to opener is madness in my opinion
You don't move a guy who has performed so well in such an important position in the batting order over the last few years which then it turn moves your best test batsman in Smith away from his best position.
Remember the revolving door we had going on at the number 3 spot before Marnus excelled at that spot?
Personally, I agree with Punter :-
Australia legend Ricky Ponting says WA opener Cameron Bancroft leads the race to replace David Warner this summer, hosing down suggestions Marnus Labuschagne or Cameron Green could be elevated to the role
Ricky Ponting insists Cameron Bancroft should be David Warner's replacement once the veteran Australia opener bows out of Test cricket in January.
WA's Bancroft failed to make the most of an opportunity today, bowled without offering a shot to Queensland's Jake Wildermuth, but remains the Marsh Sheffield Shield's top run-scorer this season.
He has 512 runs at 56.88 with two hundreds and three fifties in his nine innings so far, with one more against Queensland the Prime Minister's XI match to come, and last summer hit 945 for the season, almost 300 more than the next best batter.
