LACHIE Neale is on track to tally the most disposals in a home-and-away campaign this century as he stakes a claim for a maiden All-Australian berth.
The recently re-signed Fremantle midfielder has been the club’s biggest positive in an otherwise bleak season, racking up 630 touches at a whopping 33.2 per game.
Neale requires just under 31 disposals a game over the final three weeks of the year to break Matthew Boyd’s home-and-away mark of 721 – the highest tally since Champion Data became the AFL’s statistics provider in 1999.
Retired Docker and 6PR analyst Luke McPharlin said his former teammate could not be ignored for All-Australian honours despite Fremantle’s lowly 3-16 record.
“It’s going to be more difficult, but clearly, he’s a standout,” said McPharlin, who was named at full-back in the 2012 All-Australian side.
“What’s so impressive about his year is the way he’s maintained such a high standard of football despite the external noise about Fremantle and the year that they’ve had.
“He was in the (preliminary 40-man) All-Australian squad last year, so he’s already in the minds of selectors. He’s absolutely a chance to get in the team this year and deserves to be.”
GWS spearhead Jeremy Cameron made the 2013 All-Australian side despite his team winning just one match for the year, while Gary Ablett earned selection from three-win Gold Coast outfits in 2011 and 2012.

While Neale’s sheer disposal numbers are impressive, his ranking in the competition’s top-four for both contested possessions and clearances per game underline his ascension into the AFL’s elite midfield bracket.
“It’s the contested ball-winning ability which is the real feature of his game,” McPharlin said.
“He’s more than capable of rolling his sleeves up, getting to work and hunting the ball.
“To know he can absorb all the attention and fuss of this year and still perform at a high level… that’s going to give him a lot of strength going into next season.”
McPharlin said he had been impressed by Neale’s maturity, preparation and work rate ever since the South Australian joined the club in late 2011.
