If you thought the MCG’s transported turf story couldn’t get much worse... you were wrong.
One of the more bizarre ideas of 2020 came to fruition this week, when a dug-up section of the MCG goalsquare found its way to the Gabba in time for Saturday’s grand final.
The 3m-by-1m rectangular patch of grass was placed in a refrigerated truck and hauled up from Melbourne to Brisbane, with the idea to ‘put the G in the Gabba’ as the grand final moves away from its Victorian home.
The idea was widely panned when announced last week, with pundits and fans alike slamming it as a waste of time and money amid a challenging environment.
So there’s set to be more strong feedback today when footy followers get a glimpse at the section in place at the Gabba - because it’s not actually on the field of play.
The patch has been laid outside the boundary on a half-forward flank.
