while I’m not a fan of Channel 7 commentators Bruce was ‘special’ and with a sad farewell we say Goodbye to Bruce! https://7news.com.au/sport/afl/bruce-mcavaney-to-step-back-from-afl-commentary-in-2021-c-2258219
Any thoughts and well wishes for his service can be left here!
And we wish him well in his Olympic and Horse Racing endeavours in the future!
Farewell, goodbye and so long!
Well this is the best news I've heard this year! ****ing you beauty. Footy just became considerably more watchable!

Good riddance to the worst of them all.

Now if he'd just take BT, Derm, Ling, Darcy, Watson, Hamish, Matthews, Carey and more than a few others with him! Oh and give us back Dennis who he drove into retirement with his banality, obnoxiousness and incompetence!

Sorry I can‘t agree with this and feel you are being a bit disrespectful with your reference to the role he played in Dennis retiring. It is your right not to like him but I would highly doubt any of that final sentence is true.

For the record I loved Bruce and the knowledge, passion and intellect he brought to the commentary box. I will miss him.

I agree, I quite liked Bruce. BT is the big problem and I think Bruce just didn't commentate well along side him.

Not the only problem - I do agree some of the others are awful, please Channel 7 don't make Ling the main commentator along side BT this year, as I expect might happen...

Sound off permanently if it's BT and Ling.

I have read it will be James Brayshaw who I also don’t mind. However I suspect this will also attract some vitriol.

I do remember BT/JB commentating together on Triple M previously. It will be different. They probably won't call much of the actual play, but they were reasonably entertaining - obviously TV coverage is different to radio. These two definitely mesh better than BT/Bruce.

I like Brayshaw. He's the master of a good turn of phrase. His work on Triple M has always been great. He may not provide high level critical analysis but you leave that to the experts.

Bruce used to be ok but he had lost it in recent years. His gushing over "profile" players was painful to listen to.

BT is a tool who thinks he's funny but is definitely unfunny.

Bruce resorted to commentary 'by asking questions' and I couldn't handle it once I noticed it. Dwayne Russell is also as bad - he just says player names rather than actually calling the game.

Opinions are like... The Dennis part was a joke, just miss him as he was actually good but I could certainly hear it in his voice towards the end where Bruce would say something completely ridiculous and Dennis would just do the old "I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that and talk about something else" move, like when a mate has had way too much to drink and starts saying stupid things (from all records I've seen they were great mates and got on fine so not trying to insinuate anything!). Bruce, to me, has been terrible since the late 90s, maybe there was a period for the guys older than me before that where he was good but just can't stand his style or personality and have always found he detracted from the game, especially when certain players were playing.

Do agree that he got considerably worse with BT where it was a dumb and dumber pairing as opposed to with Dennis where Bruce's asking stupid questions was a setup for Dennis to say something entertaining.

Brayshaw I don't mind but it really depends on who he is commentating with. He's the ultimate "play down or up to the level" guy. When he's with Darcy or BT I find he loses it from what I've seen but a few times I've heard him on radio with better commentators he's been genuinely good. Can totally tell he was the kid in class who would get good grades if he was sat with the good students and would join in as a class clown when he was sat with the bad students.

Will say that watching a couple of the preseason games it's been genuinely refreshing to hear actual commentary and insight showing that it's still possible to just call the games and not try so damn hard to be the show.

And he doesn’t even get the names correct half the time. It infuriates me when he calls Lions games and constantly says “McGluggage”. Like Dwayne, it’s not hard. It’s McCluggage for god sake.

Dwayne... yeah he might be the worst actually

He's like the drunk uncle that pretends he remembers all his nieces and nephews names at the family barbecue when he clearly doesn't have a clue...
