The fear for Gibcus remains where he fits in when Vlastuin and Grimes are both available. I'm just not sure there's room for both him and Broad.

Kid is a talent but I've still got Grimes, Tarrant, Short and Vlastuin 100% ahead of him so you're having to beat out at least one of Rioli, Ralphsmith and Broad to squeeze into the back 7. The positive is probably that all of Broad, Vlastuin, Gibcus and Grimes can play small and tall, so it probably makes Ralphsmith/Rioli the first question and whether one is enough rebound.

I'd actually prefer that everyone was fit and available!

Oof Preuss out for a week!
Spanner for those going him at R2.
MRP has already got my jimmies sufficiently rustled for the season...

I just detest the rule against what Preuss did and everything it stands for.

Maynard one is also a joke, being suspended because of how a guy lands is ridiculous. It's a free kick for high contact on an otherwise legal spoil that had an unfortunate landing.

Kreuger was VERY lucky. Ran past the ball to bump (should be intentional always, imo) and hit him so hard that he knocked himself out doing it (if that's not severe under the potential to cause harm clause I don't know what is). As always, if you're going to tackle someone, or hit them high, make sure you pick cement head...

Agree, Preuss is a big ruckman trying to put down a big ruckman some force is needed. GWS should challenge that dangerous tackle.

My read looking at that tackle was: the tackle they don't like is the one where the arms are pinned so the tackled player has no chance to defend himself - that wasn't the case here. I'll admit to being mildly surprised it was a week - but only mildly because we all know MRP Lotto is a real thing.

Krueger getting suspended for knocking himself out on Wards head is absolutely peak comedy.
I think he was really lucky though as they've changed the rules this year so that head knocks are now considered an expected outcome of choosing to bump and not incidental to the decision like previously.

In other words I actually don't know how he got careless or medium impact on that one instead of intentional and severe. He ran past the ball to bump and given he knocked himself out clearly the impact is severe.

I also think it's stupid but I love the bump and want it back in full force Byron Pickett style!

Yeah, didn't pin the arms, didn't have two motions, just a good hard tackle on a huge unit that requires force and the impact into the ground is 230kg hitting the ground. If that's Brad Close tackling Brady Hough, the grass barely moves there and no one is talking about anything.

West Coast forward Oscar Allen is targeting a round five return from his foot injury for the Eagles’ blockbuster Friday night clash against Sydney at Optus Stadium.

Allen is out of his moon boot and on the comeback trail from a stress-related issue, and is working hard behind the scenes to keep his fitness up after a strong pre-season before he was slowed down “out of the blue”.

“The main thing that is important, because I’m not allowed to run at the moment, is how I keep my fitness up, so I’ve been doing a lot of swimming, a lot of bike riding,” Allen said on TAB Radio.

“Really just anything I can to keep myself in good physical shape, and also mentally it’s important to get a lot of physical stuff done. A lot of gym work to try and put on a bit of size.

“At the moment, my program is pretty low-key on track so people won’t really see me doing that much training right now, but I’m toiling away in the back with a couple of other boys who are also coming back from some injuries as well.

“We’re looking at about round five at the moment. We’ve got Sydney at home, which will be a big game.

The Eagles recruited some depth in attack by adding Hugh Dixon to the rookie list last week, and the ex-Fremantle forward has shown plenty of promise in two warm-up games against his ex-teammates.

Dixon booted two goals in the first scratch match, and showed his agility and impressive ground level prowess for a 197cm big man at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

“He’s made a great impression,” said Allen, who was recently added to the Eagles' leadership group.

“He knows what it’s like to be in an AFL program and you can tell, straight away he’s caught up with the gameplan and the boys really love being around him.”

With Allen aiming for a round 5 return, certainly helps Dixon's prospects for the first 4 rounds along with JK to be managed this year (expect he misses a number of away games) - if Allen does come back at round 5/6 I would not be surprised if JK then has a week off to freshen up especially if Dixon plays well early.

West Coast Eagles defender Alex Witherden has accepted a one-match sanction offered by the Match Review Officer for rough conduct on Fremantle midfielder Andrew Brayshaw in Sunday’s AAMI Community Series match.

Witherden collided with Brayshaw at the start of the third quarter at Optus Stadium, with the incident assessed as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact.

The MRO classified the incident as a one-match sanction as a first offence, which Witherden accepted with an early plea - ruling him out of round one against Gold Coast.

This news means Brady Hough is a huge round 1 debut chance I think, Tom Cole out long term & Liam Duggan in doubt round 1 also (maybe used in midfield more anyway like he has done in previous seasons with our injury issues in midfield).

117K mid - he does have nice skills/ composure but very skinny frame, however I think we almost have to play him with our lack of options available.

One match ban though - does Witherden just come straight back to bump out one of the rookies?
Buyer beware
