You look at that picture of hip to jaw and say it clearly wasn't high?
Read the posts above you... The AFL defines high contact as "contact above the shoulders".

Look at the picture of the incident... Clear daylight between Rioli and the head... contact is with the arm/chest.

Pretty simple mate.

Damn close though … if Willie jumps a touch higher or if Rowell was a little shorter then the consequences are huge, serious head injuries are no joke as Daniel Venables can testify…

Seriously Iain, you're much better than that...

Go and watch 360 when you get a chance. The still image you embedded in your post was taken from a news article which happens to be the same image the Eagles used to highlight that there was 'daylight' between Rioli's hip and Rowell's head. However, on 360 which I just witnessed, they put up another still image (just before the one you posted) which looked like Rowell was having Rioli's hip for lunch.

And look at that mate... Not only did the 3 field umpires not think it was a free kick But the AFL Tribunal agreed that it wasn't worthy of a suspension.

Guess I was right hey?

Or are you smarter than all the experts and everyone else?

Tribunal statement...

"The Tribunal is not satisfied the player engaged in rough conduct. Incidents such as this, where the question revolves around whether and how the player is contesting the ball are not easy.

"The Tribunal will be astute to uphold any charge where a player was initially intending to contest the ball, changed that intention and in doing so breached his duty of care. That is not this case.

"Willie Rioli had eyes for the ball as he entered this contest. There is no doubt he braced for contact a split second before contact, but when doing so, did not cease to contest the ball. The way in which he did so was not unreasonable."

  • Whether the umpires paid a free kick at the time is irrelevant, they are not immune to making an error in judgement.
  • The case has been ran and the tribunal has made a decision, I accept their decision as they're the governing body of our game.
  • Yes you're right in your assessment of the likely outcome of the hearing, you're definitely smarter than me...for now.
  • I never made any claim to being smarter than the experts or everyone else. I was merely putting forward my point of view on the incident, not because I dislike you or Eagle's players but because I was lead to believe by the AFL that this type of actions would be frowned upon to protect the longevity of our players, during their playing career and beyond. That's the single thing that I care about most in our game.
  • You say that we don't share the same view on this, I don't and still stand by what I've posted on this topic.
Lastly, my commentary was always been on the act, never the player. If that's the tribunal position on that act, then we're none the wiser in regards to the direction that they intend to go.

Think he's a good chance to get off this... The charge was "graded as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact"

They will challenge that it wasn't high (ie. above the shoulders) which you can see below it clearly wasn't... impact was to the chest and arm...and also the medium impact aspect as Rowell got straight up and played on, I suspect the GCS medical report will also support this that there wasn't enough damage to warrant a medium impact charge.. They also will challenge that it wasn't even a free kick on the day... So The AFL are basically admitting all 3 field umpires are incompetent.

Rowell even said post game it was clean bump.... "Fair play, it was a good hit," Rowell said.

The AFL defines high contact as any region above or on top of the shoulder. Rioli‘s hip made contact with Rowell‘s left shoulder (about 2-3 inches below the top of the shoulder) The force transmitted to the collar bone and that is the reason why Rowell grabbed his left collar bone when he fell to the ground.

I agree that the system is a joke... The MRO has proven himself time and time again to be not fit for the job.

Another angle once again showing contact to be to the chest/arm... and not the head.

Just saw that Rioli has beaten the rap and available to play this week. His legal team argued that contact was in a legitimate marking contest. view first picture above , if so coaching staff need to educate player on what a make is and how to go about it. The blind leading the blind
