I agree as this sets the precedence for the season .....

- I'm not overly fussed by the players or teams involved ... to me it is the act and intent ...
- I don't for one second believe he had any chance to mark that ball ... for starters you generally need to be looking at it first ....
- Just saw that it was Intentional and Reckless to start with .... just lucky (thankful) Rowell is a tough nut, got back up and played on ...

- Anyway just my view ... easy to dissect in slow motion ...

The Eagles and Rioli's point of view which I put forward... was that he jumped to take a mark, made the split decision to brace himself and made contact with mainly Rowell's chest. Here is Rioli's own words... "As soon as I left the ground I started turning my body as soon as I knew I was going to make contact I turned my body to make the contact less."
Just quoting the jury's statement for clarity...

'The jury did find he had made high contact with Rowell (fact), but that proved irrelevant after the rough conduct charge was dismissed (technicality).'

What are the current rules ....

- made contact with a player whilst not looking at the ball ...
- I thought that was a free kick these days ... could be wrong but doubt it ...

GWS - Whitfield - ankle - only rumour at this stage

Unsure on severity
Here we go again. Is it possible to delete your team, start afresh in round 2 and still win outright?:)

Getting some déjà vu, ended round one last year with 3 LTI's and the hits just kept on coming...felt a bit like Rowell, but unlike him I couldn't shake it off and never recovered, tough man.

I am stunned ... I thought the AFL were taking head injuries/ concussions much more seriously these days?

Said it many times already, the potential for a serious head injury was certainly there/ slight changes in height (Rioli jumping higher or Rowell being lower) & it would of been huge ramifications not just for Rowell's football career but his life in general (Daniel Venables). Love watching Rioli play but that was so dangerous, I was shocked seeing it live as that action could of had such huge consequences.

If this saga doesn’t result in the AFL having a good look at the definitions they use to grade actions at the MRP/Tribunal, then they are failing in their duty of care towards players, especially in light of the push to protect the head.
All the recent talk from AFL about protecting players heads now sound like pure damage control to make it seem like they are doing enough to minimise future lawsuits.
Nothing against Rioli but there is no way he should have got off that charge

Just like the rules were changed to the sling tackle, which is dangerous to head injuries,
I think the AFL should look at strenthening rules on 'Players Acts' that are dangerous to head injuries.

..........."The potential to cause serious injury - that is the change that has gone on here," Hocking said.
.........A head injury provision exists in the tribunal guidelines but is rarely invoked.........
...........(Hocking) reinforced that the potential harm rather than the actual harm - whether a player is consussed or gets up and walks away - is less consequential in deciding the severity of a blow and the punishment it draws..........

AFL changes rules following Hawthorn's Shan Burgoyne's sling tackle on Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield | 7NEWS
Shayne Hope / AFL / Updated 16.06.2020
........The new rule puts greater emphasis on the potential of any dangerous tackle to cause injury, rather than focusing on the actual level of injury inflicted.........
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said
We want to be clear; protection of the head is our highest priority and we want all players at all levels and age groups to better understand that these tackles shouldn’t be part of our game.
“Dangerous tackles have the potential to cause head injuries, and it is essential that this is taken into account when assessing an incident under the AFL Tribunal guidelines.”
