Whatever you think of Lynch, it's hard to see how a collision in a marking contest when the defender runs backward into a forward is worthy of a report, let alone being sent directly to tribunal. Gunna be a lot of reports if this is the new standard.

I disagree, he pretty clearly did not attempt to mark the ball. Hard to say it was a marking contest when he went straight for the block/bump

You see this contest 50 times in a game in various forms, key forwards are taught this action, make a contest, bring the ball to ground.

What's the difference between this contest & the Hipwood/Frampton clash in Brisbane?
Hipwood attacks contest with momentum, doesn't get there & braces for contact with Frampton who is running backwards in a huge hit.
Are we saying because he luckily avoided his head it's ok?

It's not us that is saying, it is the dumb AFL system.
Have an accidental collision, with no head contact, nothing to see here.
Have an accidental collision, and the other player gets concussed, you were careless, and get suspended.
It's beyond stupid, when the actions are identical, but the outcomes are different.

I'm not familiar with that specific contest, got a link or time on kayo?( I did try and find it on google but had no luck) My guess based on your wording would be that Hipwood didn't overrun the ball and/or if Frampton wasn't there he would have had a gueniune chance to mark the ball. Lynch wasn't moving towards the drop of the ball, had no chance of a mark and left the ground.

Also to say he made no attempt at the ball is just not right.
It was pouring rain & blowing a gale, misjudgment in those conditions is unfortunate but surely you have to be convinced his sole intent was to hit him high to suspend him.

Not sure Lynch can be blamed entirely for a guy running backward into a contest he couldn't effect. Keath got nowhere near the ball either & was never in the actual contest.

2nd quarter 5.42 on clock
No eyes for ball once he realises he can't get there, turns his body & crashes into Frampton.
Firstly cheers for the timestamp.

To me that one is okay because Hipwood is contesting ball and the timing is much closer. I dont think Lynch wasn't contesting the ball in any way. I don't think he concussed him on purpose or anything like that but I do think it was careless which is all it has to be for the AFL to suspend him.

In the picture you can see he has already hit Keath ahead of the contest and the ball isn't even in frame.

Think this was sent to the tribunal due to the concussion suffered…
still reportable offence as Lynch chose not to play the ball ( misjudged his attempt but still could have put his arms up to mark)
one of those difficult situations for a player when you know you have misjudged…protect your body or go for the ball.
if Lynch hadn’t hung his elbow out to brace for contact then wouldn’t have been deemed as careless

Keath probably should have turned to be front and centre crumb, looked like he had no chance impacting contest anyway.
Feel a bit sorry for Lynch, he wouldn't have been expecting someone running backwards who had no chance impacting contest.

The fact there's so many grey areas in this discussion is the whole point.
If the new standard for marking contests is you can do what you've been coached to do for your whole career & protect yourself from guys running headfirst at you as long as you don't get the opponent in head, so be it.
Tribunal will be awfully busy
