"Melbourne superstar Christian Petracca had surgery last night for a lacerated spleen, a punctured lung and four broken ribs.
Petracca went under the knife and stayed in hospital overnight after it was discovered his condition was worst than first thought, following a heavy hit in the loss to Collingwod on Monday.

The injuries threaten to sideline Petracca for months in a major blow to the Demons’ spluttering season."

And that is a perfect example why it shouldn't be "standard practice" for someone to play on if someone has a rib injury. I really would have thought medical staff wouldn't be recommending that. I guess they know better than me though...

Hopefully they don't feel the need to rush him back and they let him recover properly.

Staggering decision by the medicos imo. I know every person reacts different to pain etc, but he looked in all sorts when the incident happened. Could hardly move and was struggling to even breathe. I don't know how you don't play it safe, knowing that rib damage can cause organ damage. Ridiculous that he would be put out to play, and then 20 min later be in an ambulance. Im not a doctor, but I thought the colour in his face had changed, and he looked really unwell.

Completely agree! If clubs can get fined for not taking head knocks seriously they should be fined for this too.. staggering that they put his life in jeopardy when all the evidence pointed to him being in bad shape. Sub is there for a reason, but even if it wasn't there has to be a duty of care to the player over the club. Independent doctors a must for mine.

MELBOURNE midfielder Christian Petracca is set for a stint on the sidelines after suffering four broken ribs and a lacerated spleen during yesterday's game against Collingwood at the MCG.

Petracca suffered the injury in a marking contest at the end of the first quarter. He returned to the field after an initial medical assessment deemed his pain was likely due to a rib injury.

After returning to play, Petracca’s pain increased at half-time and despite assessing relatively well, he was sent to hospital for further investigation as a precaution.

Scans taken at hospital revealed the extent of Petracca’s injury, with the midfielder sustaining broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and a small puncture within his lung. He underwent a procedure to stop the bleeding last night and remains in hospital for observation and recovery.

A return to play timeline will be established in the coming week as Petracca recovers, and further medical assessment is undertaken.

Melbourne’s General Manager of AFL Performance Alan Richardson said Petracca’s health was the club’s number one priority.

"Obviously, Christian’s health is the number one priority for us at the moment. The next few weeks will be crucial, and we'll be monitoring his progress closely to make sure he heals properly and fully. As his recovery progresses, we will look towards a return to play timeline,” Richardson said.

“He's obviously an extremely important player for the team, but his health and recovery are our top priorities right now."

Was amazing watching the coverage and the commentators actually made a point noting that Collingwood players were not targeting him. Begs the question of whether they knew or were unaware. Trac was certainly avoiding any contact but the Pies players could have really made him pay every time he came near the ball. If they were aware and actually left him alone, that's a credit to them but they shouldn't have had to take that approach. He shouldn't have been on the ground in the first place.
