MELBOURNE midfielder Christian Petracca is set for a stint on the sidelines after suffering four broken ribs and a lacerated spleen during yesterday's game against Collingwood at the MCG.

Petracca suffered the injury in a marking contest at the end of the first quarter. He returned to the field after an initial medical assessment deemed his pain was likely due to a rib injury.

After returning to play, Petracca’s pain increased at half-time and despite assessing relatively well, he was sent to hospital for further investigation as a precaution.

Scans taken at hospital revealed the extent of Petracca’s injury, with the midfielder sustaining broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and a small puncture within his lung. He underwent a procedure to stop the bleeding last night and remains in hospital for observation and recovery.

A return to play timeline will be established in the coming week as Petracca recovers, and further medical assessment is undertaken.

Melbourne’s General Manager of AFL Performance Alan Richardson said Petracca’s health was the club’s number one priority.

"Obviously, Christian’s health is the number one priority for us at the moment. The next few weeks will be crucial, and we'll be monitoring his progress closely to make sure he heals properly and fully. As his recovery progresses, we will look towards a return to play timeline,” Richardson said.

“He's obviously an extremely important player for the team, but his health and recovery are our top priorities right now."
Am I immature or did anyone else think of this straight up?

Any Port (or Crows - they always love chatting about each other's teams so much) or knowledgable/smart peeps - I have a question: A) Is Port's Sweet healthy/good to play B) If he is up and about, is he best 22?

If not Sweet out, I will bring in Grundy, but otherwise, could do with a defence switch for Stewart who has been rough to own.

Given he was straight out when Soldo was back I'm thinking he's not best 22.

I think he's No2 in the Ruck pecking order atm and if Soldo were to drop in form or get injured again, then Sweet would likely be called up over Visentini.
Hard to read the mind of an AFL coach though.

Surely this is not worth a suspension.... he hit his shoulder 1st

H/Sun has this in an article

Port Adelaide star Zak Butters is facing the prospect of a one-week ban for his strike on Tom Green, given new AFL rules ensure behind-play strikes are assessed as intentional.
Butters could be deemed ineligible for the Brownlow Medal and miss the crunch game against Brisbane at Adelaide Oval if the match review panel decides the strike in Sunday’s loss to GWS is of sufficient force.

The AFL has the option to hand him a misconduct fine for the strike, but new AFL rules around behind-play fends and strikes mean he faces a more difficult path to avoiding suspension.

The footage is not clear even when blown up but shows Butters striking Green to the head, even if that initial contact bounces off his shoulder.

It could easily be assessed as a low impact, high contact intentional strike and see him handed a one week suspension.

The AFL changed its rules over summer to “strengthen the onus on players not to commit a strike when seeking to fend or push their opponent”.

The rule states: “In instances where a player intends to forcefully push or fend an opposition player off the ball (including to gain separation for the purpose of contesting the ball) and the effect is that the player “strikes” their opponent, the strike will usually be graded as Intentional rather than Careless.”

Butters is a $21 chance for the Brownlow but would be desperately missed against Brisbane after he was tagged out of the game by Toby Bedford and the Power lost another game to fall down the ladder to seventh.

PORT Adelaide star Zak Butters has copped a one-match ban for striking, meaning he'll be ineligible for the Brownlow Medal unless he successfully challenges the suspension, while North Melbourne's Kallan Dawson has also copped a week.

Early in the first quarter of the Power's match against Greater Western Sydney on Sunday, Butters engaged in some push and shove with Giants midfielder Tom Green. The Power midfielder appears to strike Green on the left shoulder with an open hand, with his hand then rising up and collecting Green on the chin.
