Concussion concern for Giants captain, Whitfield 'still an unknown'
GWS CAPTAIN Stephen Coniglio has suffered a head knock during an intraclub game, marking the second week in a row of friendly fire.

Coniglio is in good spirits, having walked off the ground after his collision with Daniel Lloyd on Friday morning at the Giants' base in Sydney Olympic Park.

If the midfielder is diagnosed with concussion he will be on reduced duties at training during the next 12 days as per the league's new guidelines.

GWS' first and only pre-season fixture is against Brisbane in Canberra on March 7, however they are likely to organise at least one scratch match against Sydney in coming weeks.

"A bit of friendly fire. Both of them hit heads," Giants coach Leon Cameron told AAP.

"Right now, he's fine. There's no concern.

"If it is concussion then he can't compete for 12 days ... he'd be able to participate in training with a red hat on, do some decision-making drills, but no contact."

ADELAIDE CROWS

Veteran Crow Daniel Talia (knee) is racing the clock to be fit for Round 1 after undergoing post-season surgery, while onballer Matt Crouch (hip) is another who had surgery in the off-season. The Crows are hopeful both will be fit to play some time in March’s pre-season hit-out, with Talia undergoing sprints on Thursday during a match simulation. Wayne Milera has returned to full training after playing just two matches in 2020. Young gun Lachie Sholl hurt his finger in an incident in the gym, but it won’t stop him taking part in action over coming weeks. Tom Doedee (groin) and Paul Seedsman (hamstring) have minor complaints that shouldn’t rule them out for too long.

BRISBANE LIONS

Brisbane’s medical room is looking very bare as the pre-season continues with youngster Connor McFadyen one of the few not at full fitness. The midfielder is working back from an ACL injury sustained in July. The good news for Brisbane fans is that Nakia Cockatoo and Joe Daniher are ready for pre-season action, with the latter booting four goals in a recent scratch match.

CARLTON

The Blues will be without key forward Charlie Curnow for most, if not all of 2021, with the tall having further knee surgery in November. Curnow has struggled to get a consistent run on the field after multiple injury setbacks. Patrick Cripps told foxfooty.com.au on February 3 that he was nearing full fitness after shoulder surgery in the off-season. The star Blue has also added a number of kilograms to his frame after trimming off 12-months ago. Young gun Brodie Kemp suffered another injury during the pre-season, with a syndesmosis issue to keep him out for a number of months. The 19-year-old was drafted after an ACL injury during his draft year. Defender Nic Newman is likely to be fit for Round 1 after a season-ending injury last season. Zac Williams suffered a head knock in the club’s intraclub match on Friday but returned to the field.

COLLINGWOOD

Collingwood star Taylor Adams is racing the clock to be fit for the season opener against the Western Bulldogs after suffering an injury on Monday. The onballer has strained his hamstring with Adams taking to social media to play down the “small hiccup”. He has suffered a number of injuries in recent years with the Pies unlikely to rush him back. Jordan De Goey has a mild abdominal strain but is only expected to miss a week or two of full training.

ESSENDON

The Bombers have already had a number of pre-season injury issues, headlined by Michael Hurley and Jake Stringer. Hurley was recently discharged from hospital after sustaining an infection in his right leg. The club is unclear on when he can resume training and will wait to see how his infection heals. Stringer had scans on an Achilles injury which has presented soreness over the off-season. He is likely to resume full training in the next fortnight, but remains in doubt as to whether he will take part in the club’s practice matches. Dyson Heppell (foot) is tracking well as he continues a full training program, while David Zaharakis (knee) is continuing his strength works after rupturing his PCL late in the season. Defender Patrick Ambrose’s return from a Lisfranc injury is taking longer than the club would’ve liked, meaning Round 1 selection is looking in doubt. Youngster Archie Perkins has missed multiple sessions over the summer, while midfielder Dylan Clarke won’t be available due to an ankle injury.

FREMANTLE

The injury setbacks are continuing at the Dockers with tall Matt Taberner the latest player to be pulled from the training track. The forward has “quad awareness” and has joined the rehab group. Coach Justin Longmuir confirmed he would miss a number of weeks which will hinder his preparation after a breakout year where he was named in the All-Australian squad of 40. The Dockers expect him to play Round 1. Darcy Tucker and Sam Sturt are slowly recovering from niggles, while ruck Sean Darcy has a knee injury which forced him into a knee brace. Defenders Alex Pearce and Joel Hamling are back with the main group after serious injuries in 2020, while Michael Walters has spent time in the rehab group due to a foot issue.

GEELONG CATS

The major concern for the Cats is the fitness of Patrick Dangerfield. The star Cat is carrying a groin issue from the Grand Final in October and is yet to take part in full training with the main group. The midfielder has some work to do to return in time for Round 1. Young Cat Sam Simpson hurt his shoulder in the same clash and was forced to have surgery over the summer, putting early action in doubt.

GOLD COAST SUNS

The real positive for the Suns is young star Matt Rowell is looking good and appears to be in no doubt for a Round 1 return. The midfielder took the competition by storm during his first five games pushing a case for not only the Rising Star Award, but the Brownlow Medal. His shoulder injury isn’t causing him any main grief, which is a real boost for the up and coming side. Gold Coast’s top pick from 2020, Elijah Hollands, is still working through his full rehab after his ACL rupture at club training in February last year and the Suns won’t rush him. Tall Rory Thompson hasn’t been seen since at AFL level since late 2018 and continues to work towards a potential late season return after another knee issue, while Sam Collins’ loads are increasing after ankle surgery.

GWS GIANTS

Key defender Phil Davis is continuing his rehab back from a knee injury which curtailed the end of his 2020 campaign. However, the big news is around star Lachie Whitfield. After a training incident last week, Whitfield pulled up sore and has a bruised liver. The Giants say it is on the lower end of the scale in terms of severity, but it is unknown how many weeks he may he out for. Young tall Kieren Briggs (hip) is one of the other GWS players who have been affected during the pre-season.

HAWTHORN

The Hawks are set to be without a number of talls for the start of the season, including star Jack Gunston. Foxfooty.com.au revealed in December a back injury would delay his start to 2021 with a bulging disc causing him discomfort. A typical recovery is four or five months, meaning Round 1 is off the cards for the forward. Defender James Sicily is still recovery from an ACL injury suffered late last season, while Jon Patton is taking extended time away from the club to deal with his mental health.

MELBOURNE

The Demons have had a double blow of injury setbacks with tall forwards Ben Brown and Sam Weideman both set for layo*** to begin the year. Weideman is expected to be sidelined for the next 10 to 12 weeks after scans revealed a stress fracture in his femur. It follows Brown who had surgery on his left knee to address cartilage damage. The former Kangaroo isn’t expected to be running for at least a month, putting doubt on his Round 1 selection. Defender Marty Hore (ACL) has undergone surgery after a training injury, while young tall Harry Petty (groin) has been rehabbing a groin issue over the summer.

NORTH MELBOURNE

North has a relatively clean bill of health minus young forward Charlie Comben. The 19-year-old will face an extended stint on the sidelines following surgery to repair a tibial stress fracture in his right leg. The Roos won’t be rushing him back, with Aiden Bonar (calf) also on the sidelines. The former Giant will be going through a month rehabilitation. Rookie Matt McGuinness is six to eight weeks away from full training after a finger tendon injury. Ben Cunnington suffered a concussion on Friday and is in doubt for the club’s scratch match with St Kilda on February 25.

PORT ADELAIDE

The Power are flying on the track and expect nearly every player to take part in the club’s internal trial match on Saturday. Aliir Aliir had jaw surgery in the off-season and has recently return to the main group.

RICHMOND

The Tigers have had one of the smallest injury lists in recent years and that is set to continue into the early stages of 2021, with just a few players in the rehab group. Ivan Soldo and Noah Cumberland are both returning from ACL surgery in 2020, with the latter the most likely to make a return at some point during the mid-season. Veteran Bachar Houli (calf) is still recovering from an injury sustained in the Grand Final, but isn’t far away from progressing to full fitness.

ST KILDA

Saints star Jade Gresham is slowly easing his way back to full fitness after a stress fracture in his back finished his 2020 season early. It meant St Kilda were without the gun onballer for the crucial points late in the season, indicating Brett Ratten’s side has the capabilities to contend without an important cog. One of the few other concerns is defender Dylan Roberton, who has taken time away from the club to consider his future.

SYDNEY SWANS

The AFL’s biggest name, Lance Franklin, suffered a minor setback on his road to recovery. The key forward hasn’t been seen at senior level since Round 23 2019 with consistent injuries keep him off the park. A small calf issue has put him back in his training, but the Swans don’t expect it to be a major issue given they will be taking their time with the veteran. Franklin returned to running late this week, while fellow star Isaac Heeney is aiming to be fit for Round 1 after a severe ankle injury. He is back running and recently took part in some match simulation, but still has work to do if he is to play in the pre-season game in March. Ruck Sam Naismith is still working through his recovery from an ACL injury back in June.

WEST COAST EAGLES

The biggest concern for the Eagles is around gun midfielder Elliot Yeo. The premiership player is unlikely to feature in Round 1 due to an ongoing battle with osteitis pubis. Constant soreness has forced the Eagles to pull back Yeo at certain points of the off-season. Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff and Josh Kennedy have all had niggles but remain in the mix to take part in the AAMI Community Series against Port Adelaide. Jackson Nelson and Jack Petruccelle have lower-end hamstring injuries and have backed off their training loads.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Defender Easton Wood is one of the few Dogs players on the injury list with the former captain nursing a hamstring injury from training on Monday. The club expect him to be sidelined for three to four weeks, putting him in doubt for the official practice game on March 8. Elsewhere, forward Toby McLean is coming back from an ACL injury suffered late in 2020 and is continuing his rehabilitation. Youngster Riley Garcia had a setback on his knee and was forced into more surgery over the summer.

AFL injury news: Dyson Heppell set for round 1; Hurley, Stringer racing clock

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/...k/news-story/181d309725e585434baaef406616e8b1

Essendon captain Dyson Heppell is a certain starter for Round 1 in a new half back role that will help lessen the strain on his troublesome foot.
But All Australian defender Michael Hurley remains bed-ridden with a lingering leg infection and seems a distant prospect of playing in the season opener against Hawthorn.

Hurley and Jake Stringer (achilles) would both need to make dramatic recoveries five weeks out from Round 1 in an Essendon side that will give opportunities to its bunch of young kids.

Stringer has managed his achilles over summer and after pulling up sore in match simulation the club has made the decision that he will commit to a period of strengthening the area instead of continuing full training.

Essendon’s forward line will be built around ex-Suns forward Peter Wright and a group of mid-sized and small forwards, with Cale Hooker, James Stewart and Jayden Laverde playing back.

Heppell has had multiple rounds of surgery on his foot and ankle but after having a pin removed from his ankle in September Dons football boss Josh Mahoney told the Herald Sun he was perfectly placed for Round 1.

“Dyson has been managed really well by the medical and high performance team he’s now essentially in full training. He is expecting to play the pre-season games and he’s playing a new role off half back. He gives the defensive some real experience which is important,” he said.

“It was a good decision to get a procedure done at the end of the season and he’s looking forward to getting out there as captain. It’s a decision based on him adding some experience to the defence but also the physical requirements of that role versus the midfield.”

Hurley’s lack of progress is a clear concern given he spent a week in hospital but after being discharged last Sunday is still attempting to shrug off the infection.

“He has a leg infection which is being treated through antibiotics. His recovery time frame is based on how quickly he recovers. It’s a bit of an unknown at this stage. The more time he misses with training and the restrictions of being bed-ridden is going to impact his return. It’s just important to get on top of it and once he gets to that stage we can think about timelines.”

Essendon is determined to get Stringer back to full fitness rather than limping through his achilles issues after he battled when returning from a syndesmosis strain last year.

“He’s on an achilles program to strengthen that area. After that he will continue to build his loads. It’s important for Jake that we set him up for success this year, so that’s what we are doing.”

David Zaharakis (PCL surgery) is building his loads after also recovering from a quad tendon strain and while he is making progress the club says only that he will be back in the early rounds of the year.

The club’s decision to replenish its key position stocks and secure a trio of young draftees in Nik Cox (pick 8), Archie Perkins (pick 9), and Zach Reid (pick 10) means the Dons are keen to play emerging talent if they are good enough.

“At this stage we want to pick the best teams we can for both games against Carlton and Geelong. We think it’s really important to build the cohesion of the group. But if opportunities come up for young guys including those first year players, then they just have to take those opportunities.”

Additionally, exciting small forward Kysaiah Pickett is currently away from the club having travelled interstate following the death of his mother, which was confirmed by GM of Football Performance Alan Richardson. “‘Browny’ with a cartilage. We’re hoping that he’d be back between Round 4 and Round 6. It will depend a little bit on how he responds to his program....

“‘Weids’ kept getting sore through the top part of his thigh. We presumed it was a hip so he went in for X-rays and it ended up being a crack in his femur. An unusual one.

“So they’re the same sort of timeframe, which means if we were to get further injuries could be a little bit light on.

“We’ve still got Tommy Mac (McDonald) who is training really well. Luke Jackson is also an incredibly exciting young player only in his second year. Mitch Brown, Harrison Petty can go forward and has done so, and Joel Smith.

“So we’ve still got depth there, but if we continue to get injuries it just makes things a bit light.”

Brownlow medallist back on track after injury-interrupted summer
REIGNING Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale will this week resume full match simulation with Brisbane after suffering a calf injury to start his pre-season.
The star midfielder, who has been renowned for his durability at AFL level, has faced a disrupted summer having dealt with the soft-tissue concern.
Neale has sat out the Lions' past two intraclub games but has been involved in competitive work over the past fortnight, having been restricted to running before that.

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/02/15/edmunds-injury-update-on-cunnington-treloar-neale-and-curnow/
SEN’s Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund has provided an injury update on some big names with the 2021 season just around the corner.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Edmund gave the latest on Ben Cunnington, Adam Treloar, Lachie Neale, Charlie Curnow and Michael Hurley.

Ben Cunnington

“That was concussion in the end that he’s been diagnosed with in the intra-club match last Friday.

“He copped that elbow to the back of the head.

“It’s the first concussion that we know of since the AFL announced those new 12-day guidelines, so a 12-day rest period will keep Ben Cunnington sidelined until February 24, a day before the Roos’ first practice match against St Kilda at Arden Street.”

Adam Treloar

“I think any time you see the words Treloar and calf in the same sentence you’re right to be concerned, we know the soft tissue history there.

“They (Western Bulldogs) are saying it’s a proactive approach, but this is what clubs do, they play it down.

“He hasn’t taken part in any of the match simulation yet, they’re hopeful of getting him up to training over the next couple of weeks, that being full training.

“We know their first practice match is coming up in a couple of weeks, he misses that one of course, and you would have to say he's in doubt for Round 1, even though they are saying he’s on track.”

Charlie Curnow

“It feels like déjà vu here.

“They still can’t put a timeline on it other than to say he won’t be ready early in the season and that he’s tracking well.

“He did go to a new surgeon this time to get to the bottom of these knee issues, these patella issues.

"He went away from the orthopaedic route to more of a fracture specialist.”

Lachie Neale

“He hasn’t taken part in the first two intra-clubs at the Lions.

“They say he’s progressing well and ready to resume full training this week, but that one has been a bit of an interrupted pre-season for Lachie Neale.

“He hasn’t taken part in any match sim.”

Michael Hurley

“This is a really serious one and a fascinating one at the same time.

“Basically, he was released from hospital on Sunday February 7, he had planned to go home and recover for a week.

“He had gone in for hip surgery – I was told it wasn’t a routine cleanout, it wasn’t a straightforward job – then the infection has spread down to his right leg, it’s flared up again.

“He went back into hospital on the Saturday just gone for another operation, they’ve had to open him up again to try and find what's going on.

“They’re trying to find the right antibiotics to treat this infection that’s got out of control.

“There’s no way he’s playing Round 1. Who knows when he can get himself right?

“Football is well and truly on the back burner.”

Jeremy Cameron will return to Geelong’s main training group on Monday after suffering a hamstring strain earlier in the pre-season.

The high profile recruit suffered the setback in late January and has been on a modified program since.

Cameron dealt with hamstring injuries at the Giants as well, managing one through the 2017 finals series.

The former Coleman Medallist however says he’s now right to ramp up his training.

“I’m settling in quite well, I was feeling really good until the hamstring and it was only minor, it was only two to three weeks and it’s been about four now so I’m back in main training as of Monday,” Cameron told SEN Breakfast.

“Taking it pretty slow just to get it right, so feeling good and settling into the club nicely.

“The guys have been really welcoming, the club’s been great.”

ADELAIDE defender Tom Doedee's wretched injury luck has continued, with his round one plans now in jeopardy after the important youngster sustained a groin injury at training on Monday.

Doedee, who has played just 10 games over the last two years, had been slowly easing his way back into main training after missing the back-end of last season with a serious hamstring injury.

That followed a season-ending knee injury sustained in round one of 2019, which kept him out of action for well over 12 months before his eventual return following last year's COVID-19 enforced break.

FROM AA DEFENDER TO RAW MID Why Rory will stay in the guts

However, Doedee – who had been hopeful of taking part in Adelaide's AAMI Community Series fixture against Fremantle on March 6 – has been plagued by a groin complaint over the last fortnight that was re-aggravated at training on Monday.

"After appearing close to re-joining the main group, Tom has irritated the right groin which had been holding him back for the past fortnight," the club's footy boss Adam Kelly said on Tuesday.

"He will be assessed during the week, after which we will have a clearer picture regarding his return to play date."

Doedee will be one of four Adelaide players to sit out an intraclub match at West Lakes on Saturday, with fellow experienced defender Daniel Talia also set to be absent as he continues to recover from post-season knee surgery.

First-year player Brayden Cook, drafted to the club with pick No.25 last December, is yet to join contact training as he recovers from a shoulder injury, while fellow new recruit Mitch Hinge (pictured below) has also been sidelined after dislocating his shoulder on Monday.

However, a timeframe on Hinge's return is not yet known as the defender aims for his first appearance in his new colours having arrived from Brisbane - following three games - during last year's Trade Period.

"Pleasingly, scans have confirmed minor damage only, meaning surgery will not be required," Kelly said.

"He will be rehabilitated and managed conservatively back to full training. Over the coming week, we will be able to make a better assessment regarding expected return to play timelines.

"Thankfully, Mitch has completed a very strong pre-season and has a good foundation for the year ahead."
