Great!

I saw Smashing Pumpkins when I was travelling in Prague (Czech Republic) in 1998. I spent a week in Prague because I loved the old part of the city. I noticed one day that SP were playing that night and it was only costing the equivalent of AUD$10 a ticket, so surprised the tickets were available that cheap (but slightly worried I was being conned) I figured why not and a group of us bought 6.

The concert was in an ice hockey stadium and we were surprised when we arrived to see that it was less than half full, with most of the crowd on the floor and the stadium stands empty. They were supported by Reef, who were an English band famous at the time for their “Place Your Hands” song that was a hit around Europe at the time.

I still think it was the best $10 I ever spent!
Half your luck!

I saw them play in Sydney a few years back. We had bought tickets months ahead, and I must have been looking forward to it in the lead-up, because I ended up having a dream that Billy couldn’t do the show ... so, of course, I got the tap on the shoulder to fill in.

While still in my dream, I remember feeling very concerned that I didn’t know 100% of the words to all of their songs ...

because that was going to be my biggest issue!

Mention of Prague reminds me one of my favourite "small world" stories ever.
A girl I worked with many, many years ago was travelling around Europe. She arrived in Prague later than she hoped, and was having trouble finding a place to stay that wasn't going to completely blow her meagre budget. Standing there on a nearly empty street after midnight, she saw a couple approaching from a distance, as they got closer, a familiar voice greeted her "Susan?! Is that you??!!". It was a friend from her recently completed uni days, who was on her way back to her hotel with her boyfriend. Neither knew the other was travelling. What are the odds? Lost and lonely in a strange city on the other side of the world, worried about how you might get through the night safely, and you bump into an old friend on a near deserted street!
