Certainly some food for thought re Martin. I am currently swaying towards leaving Martin out and picking a cheaper rookie. I guess we need to weigh up where that extra cash will be spent - i.e. perhaps it can allow you to grab that extra premium. If the extra cash can't be used to facilitate this would we just be better off getting Martin due to his scoring and JS potential?

In simple terms, if you have confidence your M7 will play most weeks, and getting a cheaper Rookie instead of Martin will allow you to upgrade a selection elsewhere to a player you think will be a Keeper/Premium, I think you'd be crazy not to do it. What you lose in Martins JS, and potential score, is more than made up by saving a trade. Don't forget, you don't just compare Martin's score to the Rookie who replaced him, you also have to factor in the amount your new Keeper/Premium outscored the player he replaced.

Yes, completely makes sense and I agree. The trouble is if the money saved doesn't allow that upgrade to a keeper/premium. In that case I would think Martin's JS and scoring potential would outweigh having the cash in the bank (even if it could perhaps allow an earlier rookie upgrade)?

If the money saved doesn't bridge that gap to the Keeper/Premium, you have to weigh up your confidence in Martin's replacement. If it is low, or waivering, it would be best just to stick with Martin.

Based on this & in hindsight, if JOM was priced in 2013 the same as Jmart is in 2014 - $222k, would you say he would have been a 'good' pick, based on his SC performance in 2013?

I think he still would have been a good selection, with hindsight of knowing how well he scored.
The table below shows how his pricing pans out, if he opened at $222,300 like Martin. As you can see, he still made a profit of $208k by the byes, and peaked at a profit of $235k by round 19. That puts him at the higher end of money-making Rookies last year, even with starting at the higher price.

There is an overseas version of the AFL pass, but I'm not sure what it costs. From memory about $100 for the season, and it gives you access to all the games. The people i know that have had it, say the ads drove them crazy.

Thanks Rowsus. My reference to D8 wasn't thinking about 1 player but the use of the position for the whole year. It was a disaster for me last year. I think I had 3 or 4 goes at it for a total profit of less than $200,000. Started with a Port Adelaide player who went ok but then had Jack Hutchings, Jackson Thurlow and one of the Saint Kilda rookies who all kept getting dropped. I needed to "let go" and "move on".
Anyway I'm better now.
Also just wondering where everyone gets there past scores from? i.e if I wanted to look up a players scores from each round last year and who he played.

You mentioned Hurn as one of your locks and then explained it. I have just been doing some research and he is only 26! One of my concerns was he was too old and injury prone, i was shocked to see he is only 26. The years have not been kind. He is under serious consideration now

I'm not sure but I have a feeling, until last year Hurn had a pretty good injury history.

Actually in 2009 he played 22, 2010 played 15, 2011 played 25, 2012 played 24 and 12 last year.

So not too bad.

Yeah I did did the same thing, reckon I got a 90 and a 100 ish score then he got injured. I also had him in SC draft.

I've been overseas for the last few years.. there are a number of good sport streaming sites, the one I use is called sportlemon and has most games live (although questionable quality sometimes)..

Hurn was only option as it was a game on a Sunday and found out my other defender was sub so I just had to trade to some other defender.

I had Hurn longer than I first thought.

Lasted till round 14 then got injured and traded for $443 K...

Yeah I was analyzing my trades the other day, and was wondering where they all went.

Then I discovered I used 8 trades either bring in or trading out 3 players, Birchall, Grimes and Hurn.

Grimes was in for Gibbs for 10 min

Hurn came in in rds 8 and lasted 4 weeks before being traded out again.

And don't start me on Birchall.

I'm not getting him. There is nothing wrong with him, he is a solid defender but I only picked him last season in round 2 due to needing to do a trade on that Sunday to trade Ben Jacobs out for North and by that stage most other teams in round had played. Hurn was about only option left to trade Ben Jacobs for that was reasonable.
Jacobs had played in most of North pre-season games in midfield and I picked him as smokie defender as he looked alright to me but in round 1 he played on wing for North and got subbed at half time so Brad Scott was not playing him on ground as much as I expected.
Then it was round 2, I'm at the G for Carlton v Collingwood clash and see on my phone Jacobs been named sub for North for later game so I decided enough is enough, if Brad Scott is going to keep using him as a sub or vest him, I simply had to concede defeat and trade straight away. Quickly searched for defender options for the game remaining and Hurn was only decent option I could afford and feel I could get what I paid for. He paid his way until he got injured

Just shows you initial team selection can really bite you on the arse if you take a speculative pick from pre-season that looks good to you but when the real games start that player is being used as a prime sub candidate in that AFL coaches eyes. Jacobs cost me at least 2 trades I could have avoided. I think this season, not taking any notice of pre-season form will be one of my policies if I can remind myself to stick to it with types like Ben Jacobs that look the goods but not guaranteed job security.
