Ok, a few suggestions.

Get rid of Brodie Smith, trust me just do it. Upgrade him to a more reliable player with a good track record of SC scoring or even downgrade him to a rookie and upgrade elsewhere.

Parker had off-season surgery so his pre-season has been limited. I would look to switch him for Danger who is a must have for our starting teams as he is the best possible captain option. I would also look to upgrade Sloane as I believe there are better options in the midfield. Pendles or JPK perhaps? I think going with one of Beams/Murphy is ok but both is too risky. Perhaps upgrade one of them. JOM won't play round 1 so either swap him for D Swallow or a rookie.

Your rucks are good.

I don't like the Isaac Smith pick. I would probably downgrade him to a rookie to afford the other players I suggested. Caddy is a calculated risk and I can see the appeal but not a risk I'm going to take.
This, you must listen

Ok sounds great! Thanks so much! Only my second year so still getting to know Supercoach. Will take all of what you have said into consideration :)
Thought maybe Sloane might step it up this year in the absence of Lyons but I will go with pendles I think

I just swapped Parker For Danger, Sloane for JPK, then got rid of Brodie Smith and put Andrew McGrath there then Dylan shiel in my mid. Also i got rid of Jaeger and got Bontempelli and Marc Murphy for Swallow, lastly i swapped Caddy for Hugh McCluggage. Are these good swaps? need someone good for Smith $6k in the bank or keep him and hope he steps up with his VC role in Hawthorn which I hope he does.

Here's my side prior to the JLT. It's somewhat similar to Ben Beast's side but I've gone a bit more value in the midfield. It's interesting to see what the money got for both of us.

Rance, Adams, Laird, Keefe, Hampton, Newman (EVW, Ryan)
Danger, Pendles, Bont, Fyfe, Heppell, Beams, Swallow, Myers (SPP, Barrett, M.Hibberd (D/M))
Gawn, Sandi (Strndica)
Dahlhaus, Macrae, Heeney, Roughy, Knight, Pickett (Rioli, Eddy)

Bank: $16k

Laird is the one player that seems to never leave my defence. Adams is that start or forget type pick with his injury history. I really like him as a choice this season so rather than be tempted to trade him in, I figure it's better to start him. Rance will be in my side before his R12 bye, just a question of whether I start him or trade him in. If the forward rookies struggle in the JLT he might become Deledio which adds more risk but he's the only other forward option I'm happy to start.

Danger, Pendles, Fyfe is a combo most of us seem to be starting. Bont vs Treloar is a tough call for me. Bont wins at this stage as my gut feel is that he's going to be a top 6 mid this season in the Fyfe mould playing in a top 4 side. Also I'm hesitant taking 3 pies mids. Finally Bont provides good loophole opportunities in R4-6 when I can't loop Danger/Fyfe. Alternatively, I could sacrifice Swallow and use the change to upgrade Beams to Treloar. Beams + Swallow vs Treloar/Prem mid + Rookie has had some good discussion recently. At this stage subject to how good the mid rookies are, I'm in the Beams + Swallow camp due to the potential +30ppg benefit. I'm also liking Heppell at his price point - happy to carry him through the season at M8 if he goes 105 @ 22 games with a small chance of going at 109-110 (some might want a bit more out of that spot though!). He is the compromise that allows me to squeeze in Gawn.

Gawn + Sandi is my likely starting structure. I have a few concerns on Goldy personally this season re his knee, north's decline & prospect of Pruess getting games in a rebuild. Although I agree Gawn is overpriced, he gives me a bit more confidence in my R1. All seasons I have done poorly is when I have messed up my rucks, and I'm worried Goldy might do a S.Martin last season (although plenty of experienced coaches are more confident on him). Sandi a lock at R2 for me. Could beat Goldy/Grundy for the number 2 ruck mantle, otherwise I can trade him to Grundy/Goldy whoever is the better choice. Have considered Witts at R3. Very valuable cover but have preferred starting Roughy/Swallow at this stage for on-field points.

Dahl + Macrae the locks. Heeney the breakout candidate with the hope he goes 95+ with more mid time. Roughy is in at this stage as all signs in the off-season are very promising. He was in my draft sides in 2016 before his injury. Nervous with even just one basement rookie at F6. Hopefully the three candidates perform well, otherwise I will consider a structural change!

Also planning to start just the one FD this season but might consider a second one at M11 if a Petracca type option pops up (ie: misses early & gets games during the byes). Based on my research & what freowho/BB have said so far, a freo rookie is a must (either Strndica or Deluca M/F). He can be partnered with a melb rookie to maximise loopholes (ie: Maynard M/F or King). Interested in how Deluca progresses as potentially a Petracca type option.

Tear it apart!

That 7 deep midfield stands out to me. It's too early I know to really have a useful debate on that one, until we are clearer on the rookies. If it comes to a cull being needed either because rookies aren't showing up in other lines or a mid rookies are demanding selection would you sacrifice Heppell? Keefe at D4, Hampton D5 ... who knows if that will hold up.

My draft teams are stopping at 6 deep mids and running 4 prems in def and forward as a tentative structure so I don't get myself too set on that extra prem mid. Happy to go 7 deep if it's necessary.

What's made you take Rough over Bennell at the same price? I'd back in the midfielder over the KPP at any price point.

Thoughts on my team would be Great-
Defenders- Alex Rance, Taylor Adams, Rory Laird, Brodie Smith, Mathew Scarenberg, Luke Ryan, (Jarrod Berry, Kieran Collins)
Midfielders- Luke Parker, Rory Sloane, Nat Fyfe, Marc Murphy, Dayne Beams, Jaeger O'Meara, Andrew McGrath, David Myers, (Sam Powell-Pepper, Jarrod Pickett, Jack Graham)
Rucks- Max Gawn, Aaron Sandilands, (Braydon Preuss)
Forwards- Luke Dahlhaus, Josh Caddy, Isaac Smith, Isaac Heeney, Jarryd Roughead, Aaron Black, (Willie Rioli, Brett Eddy)
I'm thinking of swapping Sloane for the bont but not sure its worth it and got $96k in the bank not sure what to do with it.
Biggest problem I see is that you have 8 solid Keepers, and 8 "Gee, I hope they become Keepers". It's fantastic if 5+ of them do become Keepers, but it rarely works out that way. I think you are better to try and cut that back to something like a 12/3 mix.

All good comments. It no doubt is a bit early to discern the appropriate structure. I have read positive comments on Keefe & Hampton early which makes me a bit more confident going thinner in the defence. You are right in that Heppell probably does move to another line if rookies in other lines don't pop up. Heppell, JJ & Deledio all at similar price points.

Rough over Bennell purely due to the fact Rough's been in full training since December and Bennell will be in mid-late Feb. Bennell the higher scoring potential, but as I've got a few riskier picks in Adams, Beams and maybe also Deledio, I've gone the more stable option in Rough.

I have to say that the 3 Prem defence is almost a no brainer for me. McGrath, Scharenberg, Keefe, Hampton, Vicker-wills are all really solid back rookies.

Combine this with the fact that there are so many defenders around the same price point, I think it is a good idea to start thinner in defence and let them sort themselves out.

B18-i like your side. There are certain selections I disagree with, but overall I like the structure. My only worry is there's only 10 players I would have complete confidence in saying will be keepers at the end. I'd be looking to chop Beams and upgrade someone in the forwards (maybe Roughead)? But even that is personal preference. Definitely a good base!

Easily the most unique side I've seen so far.

Unfortunately, Martin has the potential to ruin your season. Watch closely, but if Martin plays with Smith, has to go imo. Just setting yourself up for disaster.

Burgoyne is a good pick, and someone that no-one is really chattering about too loudly, but I feel Hurley at D3 leaves you a little exposed. Potentially, all 3 of your defenders don't live up to expectation.

The midfield is way too strong imo. I'd like to see O'Meara down to a Berry, and then Martin and Hurley to reliable premiums. This all just my opinion though!

I don't often post my team particularly when it's close to round 1 but we're still a fair way out so wouldn't mind some opinions!

DEF: Rance, Adams, Laird, McDonald, Keefe, Hampton (Vickers-Willis, Newman)

MID: Danger, Pendles, JPK, Hanners, Fyfe, Petrevski-Seton, Brodie, Myers (Berry, Powell-Pepper, Maynard)

RUC: Goldy, Sandi (Strnadica)

FWD: Dahlhaus, Macrae, Henney, Roughy, Pickett, McKay (Rioli, Eddy)

I've tried to put in all rookies from the 'best 22' thread. Have also added one of the GC kids as I think at least one will play round 1.

Other premium or stepping stone picks I've considered on each line are;

DEF: Montagna, Vince, Johannisen, Z Williams, M Hibberd

MID: Treloar, Rockliff, Bontempelli, Beams, D Swallow

RUC: Gawn

FWD: Nobody

Don't want to pay 550k or more for a defender so rules out those guys. A little worried about Adams and his injury history but we are so low on defenders that will play majority midfield so I've picked him mainly for that reason.

I can see the merit in starting with Beams and/or Swallow but right now I'm preferring a lower risk midfield. Treloar, Rocky and Bont have all been in and out of my team but the current guys suit my byes and are reliable with the exception of Fyfe who provides such great value.

Goldy over Gawn at this stage due to cash and value but if I go set and forget then it will be Goldy and Gawn.

Forward options are seriously limited. Can't see myself picking anybody but the guys I've mentioned. Will be monitoring Roughy closely during the JLT series and will want some indication that he will play most if not all games before picking him.

Thoughts?
Hey bb

I really like your side. The feedback that has given to you is spot on. I think you have gone a little deep in the back line and I would suggest cutting McDonald. I think it's ok to have a couple of risk players and Adams and sandi r your choice. They have both shown to go big in the past. Your team is dependant on the rookies. Hopefully you will be able to get decent priced rookies that fit your structure. At this stage the jury is out on Heeney. I'm personally sitting on the fence on him however if roughie is fit and healthy he will be decent pick.

great team slip. I like it. As you said Cripps is subject to fitness. I would personally stick Bont there. I'm tipping fawn is going to reduce is ppg this season. You could be paying overs but still a good pick. The rookies look good but it depends on the jlt series. Great job

North Melb.
Hi all,
DEF: Docherty, Shaw, Rance, MHibberd, Berry, Newman (Stewart, Ryan)
MID: Dangerfield, Pendlebury, JPK, Fyfe, Beams, DSwallow, Foote, SPP ( Myers, Barrett, Freeman)
RUC: Gawn, Sandilands (Strnadica)
FWD: Dahlhaus, Macrae, Ryder, Roughead, Knight, Pickett (Rioli, Eddy)

$8,200 left over
My other scenario was instead of Docherty, MHibberd, and Knight, swap with 2 of Laird/Montagna/Adams, and ABlack thoughts??

Overall i seem set on this team the only thing i can point out is maybe possibly going to risky with players such as MHibberd, Beams, Swallow, Ryder, and Roughead coming back of injury and also a long absence from the game; also with Sandi and Fyfe but im set on these two
Thoughts guys?

Personally, I like the 3 premium defender structure. Instead of Docherty + Foote, you could easily have Hampton + Treloar/Bont which I think gets you more points. I'm not really a fan of the lower tier defenders like Hibberd/Hartlett, but if you think they have what it takes, go for it.

Ryder + Eddy both missing in R9 leaves you with no bench cover and very close to a donut. Have a plan in case another player misses. I have all your other risky selections like Beams, Roughy, & Swallow so I think there are good reasons to select them!

Overall balance looks good. I dislike Swallow, but each to their own there. Have a think about Docherty and whether you need to use him to free up some cash to use if Sandilands goes down injured early. Docherty to Hodge will save you 100k and give you a look at Doch and whether he can back it up again. Hodge should get close to Doch at some stage and if he gets injured you could straight swap them.

Firstly, happy Year of the Rooster. Listening to fireworks and Chinese talk shows... as you do.

Anyway, I can't figure out why my team looks so good compared to you allz so far - so awesome.

Main worry is that I'll get punted for rude team name.

Year Of The Cock. (Rooster wouldn't fit)

Docherty Adams Johannisen McGrath Keefe Scharenberg - Hampton Ryan
Dangerfield Rockliff Fyfe TMitchell Heppell Beams Swallow Myers - Powell-Pepper Bolton Jarman
Gawn Sandilands - Strnadica
Dalhaus Heeney Ryder Bennell McCluggage Pickett - Long Eddy

Ps. I'm not looking for advice, I'm showing you the TEAM to beat. :p

Edit: pss. Apologies, too much Bai Jiu... look it up. ok, Back to fireworks now
