I like Dusty a lot and loved watching him at his best. But I do think the hype outweighs his career. Maybe it's the tats, maybe it's his lack of media that adds to the aura. Might be recency bias. Might be because Richmond were such an even team that he didn't have others stealing his limelight. I think Simon Black and Lenny Hayes were better players but we don't hear much about them.

Unpopular opinion.
I think the longevity of his greatness is over-rated. Because he had 2 really good seasons, and one absolutely amazing season (2017), it came across as he was still "marvelled" for a good quarter here or there. Outside of those seasons, there wasn't enough consistency in his greatness. To put it into to perspective, outside of trading on name and reputation, if they picked a best team every 5 years, he'd only make the 2016-2020 team. Absolutely the best player in the comp 2017, but he was only AA 4 times. Remove that 2016-2020 era, and I think people were looking on his efforts and productivity with rose colored glasses. He'd play a good quarter and a bit every 2nd or 3rd week, and people would be like "Wwwwwoooowwww, Dusty is SO good".
Remember, I'm talking about the longevity of his greatness. There are 9 players with 7 or 8 AA jackets, and I don't know how many with 5 or 6. The shortening of the games and season in 2020 probably helped Dusty get that 4th jacket. Without Covid happening, there's a good chance he'd have "only" three!
I think at the end of the day, his greatness is derived from his finals games, specially from the 3 Norms, thought Bachar was robbed in 1 of them, and at the end day, footy is a results based game, 3 Norms, 3 GF wins, have to say he had a great career, but of course stats can always be viewed into a perspective to suit the narrative. I’d agree over the whole of his career, if you were to exclude the finals game which attract greater emphasis, his career would not be as spectacular as it has become because of those games.
Haven't seen other retirement posts in the thread get negative discourse like this. Really odd

Why can't we appreciate and celebrate a great player at the time of their retirement without trying to diminish their achievement
Really tough isn’t it! Its probably a case of too soon for Richmond supporters, but when is the right time? It’s a opinion/results based sport. In a constant cycle where things are happening daily, if reflections aren’t spoken about as the retirements happens then the next cycle has already begun!

Tats nah, definitely the lack of media did not help his cause as an icon. Lack of approachability of himself was a negative reflection on himself. Thats not to dismiss or disrespect his on-field achievements but in todays society life is different to the Bruce Doull days! For someone who had such a high profile to have such a small public profile was so conflicting in todays world of instant coverage.

At the end of the day I think history, regardless of the current opinions, will afford him the status his career deserves as everyone else gets.

AFL trade news: Reports Melbourne star Christian Petracca ‘disillusioned’ with club

Melbourne star Christian Petracca is reportedly open to a trade as the 28-year old midfielder continues to deal with a lacerated spleen.

The midfielder is contracted to Melbourne until the end of 2029.

The 28-year-old suffered a traumatic spleen injury in the King’s Birthday game loss to Collingwood, requiring multiple hospitalisations in an extremely difficult recovery, amid reports his family were frustrated with how Melbourne handled the incident.

He went back out onto the ground after suffering his injuries during that game because nobody, including Petracca, knew the extent of them.

Since the injury Melbourne has fallen from 7-5 to 10-11, and is realistically out of the finals race with two rounds left.

MORE TO COME.
