Flagging a potential issue/rule improvement in regards to Restricted Free Agents.

I can see that teams trying to build through the drafting of rookies may hit a Brisbane and/or Gold Coast situation where they develop the talent and then are raided by clubs just when the dividend of that development is about to pay off. Thereby, having a team or teams forever being on the bottom of the ladder, and ripping the soul out of the team and league.

We need to find a solution to that, be it:
1. a home team discount, and/or
2. a maximum percentage of their season ending price that a RFA can be offered. Perhaps this can be tiered.

So, plan around not being disadvantaged when it comes to Restricted Free Agency.

Don't mind the idea of a slight 'home team discount'. Sort of resembles the real AFL landscape, where blokes who stay with their club are usually staying for less than what they would received elsewhere.

10 players was a guide based on even distribution. 6 players in Rounds 1 - 6 and 4 players in Rounds 7 - 10. Helpful for planning a strategy. Reality is obviously different with different strategies being employed.

“the sum total of contracts in the first year must not fall below the sum of the average salaries”
Let's say Team X has won 6 players at a $1M each (average salary) for a total of $6M. They can structure the contracts how they like, within the 50% margin, front or back end or a variation of those strategies. Team X's 2020 structure might look like this:
Player A: $1,500,000 (max)
Player B: $500,000 (min)
Player C: $1,200,000
Player D: $800,000
Player E: $1,100,000
Player F: $900,000
Total:____$6,000,000
There is flexibility, however you have to pay the full price for your players in Rounds 1 - 6.

NB. This does not apply to Rounds 7 - 10. This is where you can be creative.
Thanks for the explanation, this now makes complete sense to me.

So just to put it another way, the total sum of the bid price paid for players in Rounds 1 to 6 needs to stay the same for the first year but we can change the number we would like to allocate between the players (noting the 50% rule).

Okay ... so a different view whilst reflecting upon my strategy and what I still need to implement ... safe to say it didn't go as planned :)

Nice summary. Yeah, the dilemma I faced by not going hard enough for the Neale, Kelly and Dunkley types was felt later when I had to keep going to pick up Bont/Zerrett. Have no doubt overspent but both are young so hopefully repay the faith! Fwd eligibility for someone like Bont later in his career might be gold!

Snippet from an interview last night from the Immortals social media:

Reporter: So Phil, Josh Kelly exciting news for the Club?

Phil: Yes we were rapt to pick up Josh, he is a quality young man, who we believe will be a strong leader for the Club for many years to come. Our fans no doubt will love what he brings to the table over the years.

R: Have you spoken to Josh yet?

P: Yes I just got off the phone with him and he is delighted and eager to get stuck in to training. We had spoken to him many times from day 1 that we were keen to get him to the Club, we made a commitment to him to endeavour to do so, and are pleased that it worked out.

R: No other selection after Josh, why was that?

P: Look we were keen to get a couple more players but at the end of the day other Clubs were prepared to pay more for them.

R: A few in the media have criticized you for not going hard enough, how do you respond to them?

P: Look I have a responsibility to the Club and supporters. We need to take a balanced approach and ensure we set the Club up for sustained success. So while there were a couple of players we were keen on that others bid more on, we need to ensure we don't deviate from the plan.

R: Speaking of plans, what the approach tonight?

P: You will have to wait and see.

R: Thanks Phil.

R: Are you aware that you will require 22 players to field a team each round?

What was the plan for tonight ?
Just finish the last two rounds of the Top 60 Auctions ? Or finish last two rounds, time to finalise contract structures, and then start on 2017 Modified Auctions?
My understanding was that it was just completing the top 60, but I’m open to being corrected on that.

Personally I would also advocate for not starting the 2017 component tonight - I feel like it will be a better process if we have a bit more time to prep!

Yep ok. Yeah I just wasn’t sure which way were were going to go, whether it was stop or try to power through.

Fair call. I reckon if we are better prepped, the drafts/auctions will take less time during the process itself.

I’m hopeful (!) that I’ll have an ordered list of 2017 options done pre kickoff for that section, for example, so would expect that my picks will be faster than if I’m pondering each time I have to make a choice.

Yeah prefer just to finish the last two rounds. What is also the expected timing for the 2017 draft on Saturday?

Apologies I may be unavailable between 3-5 pm or so on Saturday via PC (but can make selections via phone if that can be set up).

Saturday
From the correspondence I've received there are no specific time issues except
1. Deeman1 is available only in 1 hour blocks
2. Bomber18 unavailable on PC b/w 3 - 5 pm
3. KLo30 after 12:15pm

Depending on how well organised people are it should take the following amount of time:
1. 2017 Draft Class: 90 minutes (40 players x 2 minutes)
2. 2018 Draft Class: 45 minutes (40 players x 1 minute)
3. 2019 Draft Class: 45 minutes (40 players x 1 minute)

Judging by that, is everyone available for 90 mins between 12:15 and 3pm on Saturday?

Yep ... I'm all ready to go for the 2017 draft class tonight if need be .... I think it will go a bit quicker due to the pass / bid / match set up ...

I was thinking that it doesn't really matter when we finalise the top 60 player structures ... gives a bit more flexibility once you know who you actually have .... ie the deeper your list goes the better idea you have of what funds will be required to complete your list ....

For myself I'm keeping a live track of my salary cap etc ... just my thoughts .....

Would also like to get into the 2017 draft class if possible tonight ... after that class its pretty much a snake draft which to me requires more planning ....

Sorry, I might not have been as clear as I could have been ... I am keen to not do 2017 tonight, so that I can prep tomorrow morning if needed.

I think the more prepped we are for it, the more enjoyable/tactical it will be, but also the quicker the sessions will be (which could be handy if people have shortish windows available).

I am with you @Darkie . My 2017 draft plans will depend on how my top 60 finishes and how I can restructure contracts. Definitely will need to sleep on decisions.
