CLUBS DON’T GET WISH AS AFL LOOKS CERTAIN TO STICK WITH SAME SUB RULE IN 2024
The AFL is set to stick with the same substitute structure for the 2024 season according to
SEN’s Sam Edmund.
That means that four players will remain on the bench with a 23rd player as the tactical substitute.
While a lot of clubs were in favour of having a simple five players on the bench without a sub, Edmund says it’s near-certain that the AFL won’t change the rule that currently stands.
“Almost certainly - as certain as you can before it being absolutely official - it's going to be four and a sub on the bench. So, we're going to stay where we are,” Edmund said on
SEN Breakfast.
“A lot of clubs were in favour of five on the bench and there was a push for that, but there's still plenty of others who are happy to remain with what we've got at the moment.
“It does give some clubs, the sub, the absolute irrits - the time it takes in match committee, the time it takes in the box on game day about when to pull the trigger now that it’s tactical or not medical.”
Edmund is one who believes that a simple 23-man side would be a simpler equation as some clubs consider naming a player as sub is degrading for the chosen player.
“Five would definitely be simpler,” Edmund said.
“Those who argue for five, a lot of them have said what it would remove is the degrading exercise of a player having to be the sub and they use that word degrading.
“But we're staying at four and a sub for this year.”
