Two part question;

1. Are four Fremantle ‘keepers’ too many?

If your answer is no then please let me know but you do NOT need to proceed to question 2. If your answer is yes then please proceed to question 2.

2. Which would you pick out of Serong or Brayshaw if you could only pick one? Then who would you pick if you had to pick one of Parish or Rozee?
1. I’m inclined to say yes, especially if there are other keepers with the same bye that you want to start/potentially upgrade to.

2. I have Brayshaw myself. I understand that Rozee may have had some injury issues this preseason (?), so I was going to reluctantly say Parish … then I looked at his numbers, and maybe he’s a better pick than I had previously thought.

I’d say four is too many to start with. Just a big risk if Freo have a season as a team where they perform below expectations. No issues with ending up with 4 through upgrades but too long for a season for me.

As to the second point I’d say Brayshaw only just. His form post his slow start last year due to injury was great.

Then I’d go with Parish. Pretty bullish on Parish having a bounce back this year and word is he has been training very well. Had some injury issues the last couple of years but looks to have overcome them.

Depends on position I think. Young/Brawshaw/Serong all taking bites at the same midfield pie might be an issue. I think in these 50/50s you just pick the better player which is a pretty clear Rozee and a less clear Brayshaw.

1: Dogs have the top priced Fwd, Mid and Ruck this year, so clearly they would all be considered keepers. They also have others such as Libba, Treloar and Daniel who you could easily say are keepers - based on that there is no real reason you can argue 4 keepers from the same club wouldn't work if you can afford them.

Would the Dockers be different then, as they are not right at the top of the price range? If you consider each of the players is going to be a possible keeper, back yourself. The only possible issue with too many keepers from one club will be bye rounds, and I don't think that's an issue with the Dockers.

1. Depends how many you have from Port I'd say. I feel like 4 is maybe the max I'd want between them.

2. Tough call, probably Brayshaw and Parish. Both have more proven upside to their price, Rozee and Serong certainly have upside but it's more speculative

I have sort of the reverse question, is only 2 Freo/Port premiums not enough? Currently I only have Young and Butters

I don’t see anything wrong with just the two. I guess it’s advisable to then have a fairly even spread of other premiums across the R12, R14 and R15 byes.

Port and Freo do have the favourable R13 bye due to just the two of them that share it but when that rolls around you can just hold both of your premiums. I’ll likely run with 4 or 5 premiums and will very likely need to trade one, two or possibly even three of them.

1. Largely depends on the risk appetite of the coach but I fail to see the reward outweighing the risk when opting for four or more keepers to start the season given the reliance on one side, the portion of the salary cap tied up with that side and the possibility that a third of the 18 could come from one match if you have exposure to multiple players on the other side. Can all sections prosper in less than ideal game situations, roles, etc and are they reliant on the team performing well? Is there enough pie for everyone? Can they provide a greater return on investment relative to those also available around the same price range from other sides?

2. Brayshaw and Rozee. Personally have next to no interest in Parish given I do not see a high enough ceiling to warrant the price or outperforming others in the price range and he could be picked up around the $550,000 range later in the season. Prefer players that can score well by not racking 30+ touches and feel he doesn’t hit the scoreboard enough, nor register enough tackles as well as a less damaging (shorter/sideways/backwards) kick.

I don’t profess to have my bye strategy all worked out, but I can’t see why that would be a big problem so far out. Your team could change 20+ times by then.

Q1: Probably two sides to this question,

No it's not overkill to have multiple keepers from the same team if they're on different lines and play different positions. For example Ryan, Young, Brayshaw and Darcy I think would be fine as they shouldn't eat too much into each others points.

Yes I think it's overkill to have multiple keepers that play the same position on the same team, particularly if they're a poor side. For example owning Young, Brayshaw and Serong will probably eat into each others points. Unless you see all 3 being top of their lines I think you can look elsewhere.

As others have pointed out, if you have a large portion of Fremantle keepers it's probably ideal to go light on Port keepers and vice versa.

Q2: I like Brayshaw as he has a bit of value with injury affected games included into his price. Although with all the talk of Fyfe, Serong, Jackson, Young and Johnson all running through there I can see him getting pushed to a wing at stages. Probably too early to make a decision and would just wait for more news, either is fine though, like splitting hairs.

Rozee could potentially play forward with all the port mids and interrupted pre season but too early to tell. Parish I like and will be a fine pick if he stays fit. Parish for me at this stage but either is fine.

If they are all full value keepers it's unlikely they will give you the points to justify their price. If Young and Jackson are value keepers it could work.
The 4 players you named don't appear to be must haves, but 4 of maybe a dozen or so that could get the job done. Therefore I would prioritise the byes as a reason for selection and a variety of teams to spread the risk.
As for the individuals themselves:
Serong and Brayshaw look like they have to do more sharing this year.
People are saying Brayshaw has an injury discount but has already missed some training because of a head knock. I think the injuries are part of his profile.
Talk of Wines being more inside this year and Rozee and JHF to rotate from the forward half.
Parish the least likely to have his position compromised.Haven't heard anything so I assume he's having a good preseason.

FWIW - Port and Freo are the best two sides from a bye perspective. Neither has an early bye and they are the only teams with the bye in Rd 13. Shouldn't influence things too much given all the early bye rounds are also best 18 and we now have 40 trades but still worth thinking about in terms of keepers if you can't split two players.

No. Think back to Swan/Pendles Jelwood/Ablett days, two premiums mids is fine. No reason you can't have another Ruck plus a defender Ryan/Darcy etc. This will be fine if Freo win lots of the 3300 each week. If they get smashed, look out weekly ranking! Hayes NDS NRoo. The Doggies are another example just last season where ruck plus two mids and forward (after dpp changes) would have been fine.

2. Brayshaw

I think it's on the edge of too many, I'm more comfortable with 3 max as I prefer to have a spread over multiple clubs.
I've currently got Jackson, Serong, & Young + 2 rookies (Emmett & Sharp)
Not sure how many of those end up in my Rd1 team.

I'm picking Serong, mainly due to him having an upward trajectory with his SC scoring over the last 3-4 yrs.
In that same time, Brayshaw has plateaued at around the 110 mark, so I'm happy to take the risk Serong matches and maybe exceeds that.

Rozee vs Parish - both good yet awkward at the same time. I'd give Rozee the nod as he's missed less games in the past couple of years, but I probably won't start with either, maybe picking Butters instead??
