Khamis and Coffield are apparently competing for the same spot in the 22, but can wait on selection to confirm that. Watson looks a talent but is a small, small forward. These types never consistently produce to make them startable (see the as-talented Rachele who is about 10 cm taller, or the plethora of other failures over the years for that position for SC). Duursma I will be surprised if he's selected r 0, needs some time in the gym + eating lots of protein; he's a true bottom ager as a draftee so no surprise that's the case. Windsor was a bit of a turnover machine in today's match sim. Sicily is hurt by Blanck injury, especially at that price. Bolton, Jackson and Macrae all very iffy picks. Bolton just check his scoring history, Macrae due to age, injury and the role. Jackson really does need injury to another player to become relevant at that price, I truly hope that doesn't happen as I'm probably starting Shrek. The mid premos are fine outside of Neale who has a double bye and will probably decline a bit anyway.

Heading towards a mid priced strategy early. Picking guys with new roles/teams. DGB might get a look in now, also DPP handy with Baker if required. Massimo and Burgoyne on wings, also looking to get security with less rookie types in the backline, faded Curtin, could be 50 type scorer. Flynn can be flipped to Grundy, Massimo could become Williams. I'm not counting how many keepers. 🙄

Hi Prof.
- Structure looks pretty good, looks like you love a POD. Hard to see D'Ambrosio or Burgoyne playing on the wing outscoring a Williams type, despite the injury history he only has to last the first 6-8 weeks to be a successful pick.
- You shouldn't really ever pick your team based on ownership but Williams is a fairly safe pick considering nearly every serious player would have him. Hard to see him not being the best cash generator and on field scorer at his price in DEF (barring injury).
- Hard to see Atkins taking the next step or being a good SC scorer. Better options at his price like a Crouch/Amon/Wines with good historical scoring if you want to go there. Better off getting a genuine uber premo than fluffing around with those types.
- I like the Flynn pick but hard to see him matching Grundy at best, let alone outscoring him for the year.
- I don't think I have to say too much on McKay but 400k for a key forward with an early bye. Could downgrade to a Fyfe/Billings/Lazarro/Windsor or even Sexton and spend money elsewhere to get those top of the line scorers.
- Couple of rookies with iffy job security and sub risk which is fine for now until we know more closer to round 1 but apart from that there's a bit to work with.

Like the Duggan pick, Witherdon and Yeo have also been in and out of the DEF line way to any times. I think one of them will be a value selection this year. Really Surprised no Williams, is there some issure with him for RD0.?

Atkins may be effected with Guthrie returning, and Bruhn will alo need to be given the oppertunity to grow in his designated role. Have you considered Wardlow for this position, the lad is a jet and should comfortable reach the 85+ average to the byes. Like the McKay selection, got plenty of looks last year but was just horrendous at the set shots, with the King Curnow up front getting all the attention McKay is a sneaky POD.

Appreciate the feedback, I see Williams in a lot of teams, has a lot of talent, just think his disposal can let him down, I just try to zag away from popular picks sometimes, he's on fire and fully fit, so I may still bring him in. Understand the Geelong mids will have a few rotating through there, the retirement of Selwood opens up a spot for either Guthrie returning or Bruhn who appears ready this pre-season. I'll have to wait for the 1 pre-season game to see how Atkins goes, but, he's been working on a few things this season, so hoping that translates to more points, higher than his average. I did have Wardlaw in and agree he's a beast at a cheaper price. McKay, well he's stated he's worked on his goal kicking, so we should see more drop punts and less banana kicks, I envision Curnow as the lead up and Harry as the beneficiary of targeted kicking inside 50. Hoping that pans out.

Hey FTB, I just saw your post, apologies for the delayed response. Yes and Yes, I love my pods. I think there are a lot of players that aren't sure which strategy will work this year. I'm not a fan of the rookie forward line and prefer a more traditional structure, on McKay I understand he's at $400k, but believe his ball use and opportunity will be through the roof this year. I actually want Flanders too, but have no way of getting him in atm unless I make some adjustments. Windsor and Lazarro have my interest, Fyfe and Billings not so much.
Agree that Williams is a safe bet, however, need a pre-season game from all to get a guide on how they all play. Thanks again for your feedback.

I can’t see any upside in Atkins or McKay at their starting price. I reckon DGB will be a shut down player and he is in a moonboot currently. Massimo could go well if he gets the right role.

Nice team, very different to others ive seen.
Prefer grundy in the ruck than gawn.
I think gawn will start slowing down a bit, pretty sure he is 32 now.
I have gone grundy english. Good luck
thanks, Grundy has been a real disappointment since leaving Collingwood, actually since signing that million dollar deal with them. Don't think I could pick him again, although he has a massive opportunity with no competition at the Swans.

The biggest issue the Swans are going to have with Grundy is having to pry the big old hipster out of all the vinyl records stores in Newtown. I think he's set for a big year. Top 2 ruck? I dunno, but worth a shot at that price.

My punt at the moment is on Adelaide. I reckon them, Carlton and GWS are the ones going to push and challenge this year, with Port a pretty decent show too. Brisbane should be thereabouts again. Hopefully my Pies too but other than Dakes, I don't see too much SC relevance in the top end of the Collingwood list.

Therefore, Laird and Dawson to head up the mids, with Rankine to be a top 6 forward by the end of it all. The odds on backing up 115ppg seasons is fair to poor but Laird and Dawson have done it, just last year in fact. I think with Adelaide fixing their late game woes they will be primed for a huge tilt at the 8 and these 2 leaders will be in the thick of it - especially early. There's budget to go Rankine to go to either Greene or Flanders after their early byes if needs be.

Houston, I'm a little uncertain of but is in for now and I've gone for Rozee over Butters, thinking Rozee has the better upside. I also wouldn't mind culling him early for a Touk/Walsh slingshot (see below). Butters could very well go 130+ this year though so it's one I'm really iffy on. If the rookie situation is such that I don't need the 71k ITB, then I might go with Zach here but I've got too many 117k rookies for my liking at the moment. I need some bank for my bench.

Daicos: theoretically, I shouldn't be picking him. Too pricey for a 3rd year player who is going to cop a lot of attention and is a young guy coming off a flag. But I'll be stuffed if I'm going to death ride the kid. It just takes too much joy out of watching him play. Truth be told, I feel the same about Butters and I'll be saying the same thing about Wardlaw in a year or two, no doubt.

Davies-Spudniake: Yeah I'll go there again.. With trepidation. I need some characters to slingshot into Walsh, and Touk Touk so welcome aboard. This pick could instead be a punt on a hot start from Petracca fwiw. See, in round 1, LDU will be coming in cold against a warmed up GWS away whereas Trac will have had the OR hitout and will be up against WBD and then the Hawks. If either pick is just there to score maximum points while keeping Touk's seat warm, then it's more likely Trac should do it with the better setup. However, if I pick Trac, then it has to be him I trade out when his bye approaches, even if he's doing well. If LDU is doing well, I will still have 4 other mids to choose from. LDU is therefore the more flexible pick.

Brayshaw: See Davies-Spudniake. The idea with these two is that I expect I want to end with Walsh, Green and/or Miller. Maybe Neale and probably Bont. But I'll spend a couple of trades early on some premium type keeping my 6th and 7th rookie score off field. Brayshaw might be underpriced after his shocking start to last year but I'm not too confident on him being top 8 this year. Here's looking for a couple of 110s in the first 2 rounds then off he goes into Miller.

I'll use a Flynn or Xerri type to merry-go-round the rucks early. Maybe English if the circumstances are right and might save a trade by not trading him out at the end of it. I figure with the LDU/Brayshaw slingshot and these guys too, it should account for 4 or 5 of those extra trades we got this year that I didn't really need last year so why not.

Fyfe: Just need the 8 weeks mate. Preferably in a row. In the midfield. No sub. Think you can do that for us? Even just the 6?

Sounds like you have a heap of premo sideswaps planned? What are you going to do about missed rookies or mid pricers that became must haves?

Using extra trades isn't really a problem, it's more the timing of which these trades will need to be done between rounds 3-6

This is an interesting take on how to deal with the early byes and I would love to hear a bit more discussion on the merits of slingshotting players over those rounds.

It's obviously something that will be frowned upon by the traditionalists, but I think that it's something worth exploring. Some of the ideas about how to build a team and manage trades could be (are) outdated because of the changes over the last 3 years.

We now have 10 more trades in conjunction with 5 boosts, surely that demands a rethink on how to approach the game. For instance, a trade back in the 30 trade era was said to be worth $150k, surely that's less now.

My read on things is that any advantage that can be gained in the early rounds is worth gold, mainly because we're all upgrading and finishing our teams early and about the same time, meaning that those early gains are nigh on impossible for others to make up (providing a good trading strategy is maintained) So 50pts here, 50pts there and maybe 50pts somewhere else adds up and results in a big POD to most teams.

I don't mind the slingshotting but it should still be with an eye on improving the team. I don't think prices would have moved enough by rnd 2 and 3 to see a profit from a slingshot. Maybe the slingshot could be seen as a correction if you have a regret. I don't like sidewaysing. I see the 40 trades as meaning we don't have to try and get as many keepers into our starting team. We can build more cash and have a stronger team for the run home. One more keeper on each line with looping. Having a Curnow or Cameron at F7 and taking their good scores.

Just be careful how many trades you’re committing to sljngshots and when they fall. There will be the inevitable injuries/suspensions/role issues that will force trades. Then also some hot hands that look like must haves.
I think a big thing this year will be using trades aggressively but keeping flexibility in how you use them. What if guys you have planned as trade outs are averaging well? Can you pivot on your plan?
