Anyone who is shocked by all this is pretty naive.
Everyone knows the AFL, and by extension the Clubs within the AFL, strive outwardly to have one image, while inwardly things work entirely differently.
Scale it back to a much smaller model, where Mum knows her 12yo is sneaking behind the garden shed and smoking cigarettes. She's aware it is happening, but does nothing. But, if she is confronted with it, by actually catching them in the act, then she has to go all authoritarian on them. Tell them off, punish them, show them it is not acceptable! For all that, she doesn't go out of her way to catch them, even when she knows it's happening. One has to ask, is Mum really worried about them smoking, or more worried about how her child being caught smoking reflects on her as a parent?! What will the neighbours say/think?!
And therein lies the AFL, and Clubs, with their players. It's more about being seen to be worried and doing something about it, than actually
being worried, and doing something about it!!!!
And they wonder why, when a player gets caught, publicly outed and apologises, everyone says "You're not sorry for doing it, you're sorry for getting caught!".
