Quite disturbing though, the layers of corruption in the AFL system allowing this to happen.
Makes you wonder though...if they're going to such lengths for players to not get caught with drugs in their systems, how are some still getting caught out testing positive?
I wonder how many players that were late outs with "Illness" were really ill?
Young folks, lots of disposable income, addictive substances, adequate time and ample opportunities presented by all sorts of types - the only thing surprising is the lack of bans that have been announced after three strikes.

Yeah for sure, the legal consequences that apply to non sporting people don't seem to apply to top level sports people, Joe Average gets fined, a criminal record, sometimes Jail depending on how many priors, Sports people get counseling, interventions and cover ups.
I guess after reading Matt's post with the anti doping policy, that Doctor wasn't really blowing the whistle on anything new.
Maybe the 'Faking Injuries' part but that could easily come under the ' Imperative to not let a player with drugs in their system take the field part'

The faking injuries part is taking off on Twitter, no surprises on who is trending

Anyone who is shocked by all this is pretty naive.
Everyone knows the AFL, and by extension the Clubs within the AFL, strive outwardly to have one image, while inwardly things work entirely differently.
Scale it back to a much smaller model, where Mum knows her 12yo is sneaking behind the garden shed and smoking cigarettes. She's aware it is happening, but does nothing. But, if she is confronted with it, by actually catching them in the act, then she has to go all authoritarian on them. Tell them off, punish them, show them it is not acceptable! For all that, she doesn't go out of her way to catch them, even when she knows it's happening. One has to ask, is Mum really worried about them smoking, or more worried about how her child being caught smoking reflects on her as a parent?! What will the neighbours say/think?!
And therein lies the AFL, and Clubs, with their players. It's more about being seen to be worried and doing something about it, than actually being worried, and doing something about it!!!!

And they wonder why, when a player gets caught, publicly outed and apologises, everyone says "You're not sorry for doing it, you're sorry for getting caught!".
