Reid only needs one spike score and Dempsey a spud score to switch those scenarios.
Not sold on upgrading Wilson after one price rise to another rookie. It’s cost you $50k that Wilson could make this round. you’re behind on the equation before you even started.
No crystal ball though, I hope Dempsey does the business for you
Thanks for the well wishes.
Right back at ya.
I'll split this response up because it was looking pretty ranty when I proof read it just now.
Overall cash generation:
Wilson may have that spike game in him and it might be this week. He could make 50k this week you say? Well yeah but he'd need to hit 100+ probably with that 25 in his score for the next fortnight and he hasn't shown anything like 100 points ability but ok. He might do it this week. Or it might be in round 10. Or his ceiling might really be the 66 that constitutes his highest score so far. He could get to 300k eventually and well done if that's the case. It is likely to be a good 6 weeks time and it might turn out to be excellent timing but I can't predict rookies that far into the future so I'll play the odds on this one.
Quality rookies and MPs:
You can't have all the rookies and MPs. But you do want the best ones. The "best" is a guessing game. My original guess appears so far to be wrong (Wilson over Dempsey). Do I stick manfully to that guess or do I fix it? (Admittedly... I'm only hoping that this is fixing it!)
Rookie timing:
The point of the earlier post is that sure, overall cash generation is important but the timing is just as important. And I don't think coaches, especially on this site, give enough attention to it.
You know when we're picking our starting lineups and someone says "I'll just fade Smith over there because he always starts slowly and I can pick him up cheaper after he puts in his 50"?
The response is usually "But you never have the sort of cash you need to pull off those sorts of trades early in the season. You can't fade Smith!"
Probably because most of us remain in the 20 trades mindset of maxing out those rookies and waiting patiently for the slow burners. Or because we have so few fast burners that "you can't trade them yet! They've got 100k to go!"
Having more fast burners allows you flexibility in getting that fallen premo. He puts in his signal tonne or two that flags his return to grace and boy, you wanna have your precious cash cows ready to grab him. You know the feeling. Holding on to stalled rookies only exacerbates the risk and the problem once manifested.
Example:
We have a suite of uber premiums coming in in the next 3 weeks in Daicos, Dawson and perhaps Oliver. JHF as a forward is already being mooted in a year when having the right forwards, even early season rookies is offering us a massive edge on the comp. How many of them are you going to want to be in a position to get?
Here's what's going to happen from my perspective:
There will be 2 premiums getable and maybe a couple of breakout contenders in the 500ks. Possibly more if Anderson/Rowell haven't gotten away from us. Stewart is giving non-owners a bit of a look by his standards,
In order to get these players I want to be able to 1 down 1 up couple of 300 - 350k rookies/MPs yeah? The list of likely candidates on my squad runs to: Mass, Williams, Roberts, McKercher, H Reid and Sanders. Maybe Cadman and Carroll
I doubt the number of fresh rookies gettable at that point will allow to 1 down 1 up 4 times, sure. I won't even
want to cull all my cash cows that early. But each time I cull a couple, I'm exposing another onfield spot to the likes of Wilson and his 26 point risk. I don't know which of my rookies won't be available so I can't just wish the problem away with a vague plan around looping him. I want some sort of reliability. I'm not just spending a trade and early capital (which I have no need for a fortnight) to hitch a ride on a rookie I might have missed. I'm spending a trade and cash I don't need this fortnight on the midpricer I hope to shore up onfield position 22 for a month and a half.
Ideally, he will then make a fine stepping stone.
So I'll play the odds. Upgrade into the 21 year old "rookie" mid pricer who hasn't yet shown a proclivity to pooping the bed like Wilson just did. Yes, Dempsey's draw might be tightening up a bit. But Wilson got his 26 against Essendon.
Good luck to all Wilson holders. There are a lot of you. Sorry to all Demspey holders. An essay like this can only mean one thing for his immediate future scoring.
