Good point Drew. Not sure how I feel about this signing. Honest player but not really a Beams, Griffen or Christensen.
Could go ok but would prefer to give some of the young players some games.
Same mate, not a fan of the pick myself...not the type of player we should be bringing in imo.

ESSENDON has confirmed former St Kilda defender James Gwilt will join the club as a free agent.

The Saints cut the 28-year-old at the end of the season after 126 games with the club.

He has agreed to terms with the Bombers with the paperwork to officially be lodged on Sunday.

Gwilt played in the two Grand Finals in 2010 with the Saints and was among the team's best players in the drawn Grand Final.

He had been linked with Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney throughout this trade period although the Demons were only going to consider him if he was available after the free agency period as they did not want to jeopardise the compensation received for losing free agent James Frawley.

St Kilda plucked Gwilt from Noble Park with pick No.63 in the 2004 AFL National Draft.

He was a talented performer in defence, is an excellent kick and can play a number of roles.

Bombers list manager Adrian Dodoro said he was a valuable addition to the club's list.

"James has great flexibility having showcased his ability to play on both small and tall forwards during his time at St Kilda. He has proven experience in big games having played well during finals series in his time at the Saints," Dodoro told the club's website.

"It is exciting that James has agreed to join our club as we believe he can add some real depth and experience to our list.

He is still playing some very good football and we are confident he has a lot to offer our club going forward."

Tom Boyd wants out of GWS to be traded to the Dogs...

GWS' top draft pick Tom Boyd has requested a trade to the Western Bulldogs, with the Dogs confirming they have been contacted by Boyd's management.
In a statement on the club's website, the Bulldogs say they are willing to do a straight swap for want-away captain Ryan Griffen, who announced last Thursday that he wanted to leave the club and join the Giants.
But the Giants say that they will not trade Boyd "under any circumstances".
CEO David Matthews said on the GWS website: "With Ryan Griffen indicating he will seek a trade to the Giants, we are in discussions with the Western Bulldogs. We have been clear with them that despite any speculation or interest, Tom Boyd will not be traded under any circumstances.

"With pick four and potentially another high first round selection we are confident we are in a strong trade position as we enter the week."
"We will now work with the Giants to do a fair deal in the interests of all parties during the trade period," the Bulldogs' statement read.
Bulldogs president Peter Gordon said he wanted "unprecedented" compensation for Griffen if he is traded, saying he was the hottest property since Gary Ablett left Geelong for the Gold Coast.
"We'll deal with it in the smartest and [most] strategic way that we can," Gordon told radio station Triple M.
"Let's look at Ryan Griffen, he's just played his 200th game, captain of the club, All-Australian, one of the most credentialled guys going around."There wouldn't be a player, except maybe Gary Ablett, that's changed clubs in the last couple of years that's had the cachet and the value that Ryan Griffen has got.
"Dealing with it on a theoretical level, if we agreed to that sort of request, then the sort of quid pro quo we'd be looking at would be pretty much unprecedented in the competition."
Gordon denied the Bulldogs, who have already lost Callan Ward and Jarrod Harbrow to the expansion clubs, were "cannon fodder".
"We're in this to win it," Gordon said. "It's been a tough week at the office for us but you can expect us to fight back as aggressively, and as creatively and as strategically as our members are entitled."

ALLEN Christensen has joined the Brisbane Lions after being traded from Geelong for pick No.21.

The talented 23-year-old midfielder, who played just eight games in 2014 after battling a back injury, asked to be traded to the Lions last week in a surprise move.

He met with the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast but the Lions were keen to secure him.

Christensen has played 65 games and kicked 56 goals and was a member of the Cats 2011 premiership team.

He finished eighth in the Cats best and fairest in 2013 and looked to be emerging as a vital component of the Cats' midfield.

Christensen joined Geelong as selection No.40 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft.

Lions talent acquisition and retention manager, Peter Schwab told lions.com.au Christensen was an exciting addition to the club's midfield.

"Allen is a fantastic player who brings some good finals experience to our young list. He offers a great injection of pace into our side and will be a valuable addition," Schwab said.

The Lions received pick No.21 last week after trading two time best and fairest Joel Patfull to Greater Western Sydney.

“Leppa (Lions coach Justin Leppitsch) spoke at the end of the season about a desire to recruit A-grade talent to our football club, and that is exactly what Allen is.”

Is anyone else surprised that more hasn't been made of this? It looks to me that Geelong are a bit too happy. I expected them to put up more of a fight.

From something I was reading today, there is a really good reason as to why they wanted zero fuss and for the trade to go through as quickly as possible for a pick around the right mark, albeit slightly unders.

But I don't like spouting/perpetuating gossip of this kind so I won't be the one to post what that is.

I've read three different rumours re Christensen in the last couple of days, two on different forums and one on twitter. I'd have no idea if there is any truth to any of them or if they are all fiction as none of them come from what I would consider a reliable source.

If it were just a straight swap of Boyd for Griffen then the Dogs by a country mile. But thats not gonna happen.

GWS are going to play hard ball with Boyd, and would want a fair bit more than just Griffen in return. They'll be coming from the point of view that a 29 year old with back issues doesn't equate to a 20 hulk number one draft pick just one season ago that could become a star of the game.
