Hi Rowsus,
Hope you've enjoyed the first game of the season. Is it just me or do colours seem brighter, and whites whiter?
Jarrod Witts has been named as sole ruck for the Magpies, presumably with Gault chopping out. Grundy has been named an emergency.
I don't want to pick Goldstein. I think he's great. Love him. Think he's probably top ruck this year. But I think last year was some version of a spike and I think he'll be heaps cheaper at some stage this season. That said, I've been resigned to picking him (save a brief exciting period where I thought Currie might be named) because I wasn't keen on any midpricers and I felt I could sustain one overpriced pick in my team if I sought value elsewhere and if I was confident Goldstein would be a required pick at some stage.
Enter Jarrod. Am I having the dreaded last-minute crazies, or am I right in thinking that if he plays as sole ruck he's a midpriced r/f with a high likelihood of outscoring his price and a genuine (if not high) possibility of becoming a forward keeper?
Hi stephen, it was a ripping start, wasn't it?!
I entertained Witts myself, for about 3 minutes when Currie wasn't named. Last year Witts had an interupted pre-season, with shoulder surgery. If we look at a worst case scenario from that, Grundy and Witts played 8 out 14 games together, when both were fit. I can't see Collingwood using Gault/Moore as chop outs on a regular basis, or against teams with strong rucking set ups. Therein lies the problem. Witts highest scores last season were: 83, 82, 81, and his 3 scores when playing without Grundy were: 71, 82, 81. So he averaged 78 without Grundy, and 71 with Grundy in the team, and scored two of his top 3 without Grundy. The two played together around 50% of the time when they were both fit last season, and I can see it happening again this season. Here's the cruncher - He needs to average 79/game just to maintain his price over the first 10-12 Rounds, and that's better than he did last season without Grundy, so it's hard to see him doing it this season, with Grundy. Remember, it only takes one bad score to stall his cash raising. You want a Stepping Stone, not a Piggy Bank.
I really don't share your opinion that he can become a Forward Keeper, unless Grundy gets some sort of LTI. And I can't see him outscoring his price on a consistent enough basis, to make any real cash.
Hi Rowsus,
Great to have footy back ! Stephen raised a good point so perhaps you could help with my question simultaneously. I want keen on Goldy at his price and would only consider him originally if there was s suitable mid pricer who I could not decide on. Now with the teams out Witts comes into picture. How do you feel about his JS ? Changing Martin/NicNat into Goldy/Witts gives me an extra chunk of money and just makes me feel better about my whole team as I was never really married to my ruck setup. Also I don't mind using trades early to correct Witts if it doesn't work out, ad I'm quite disciplined with rationing my trades over the course of the season; ie I never have trade scarcity issues at the pointy end of the season. Cheers
The only problem I see with the plan, is that Witts may not be an easy fix, depending on how long you hold him. You can only go down if you have a link you can bring up, which I guess you might have, if you have Witts. Otherwise you have no choice but to fix him by going up.
