I went with Balta over Parker. Is it a bad trade to swap them?
Not yet IMO ... Balta played his role and to me is probably the best of the bench rookies for scoring pure ability / role. Didn't pan out on the weekend but he only got 50% game time and I'm staying the course for another week at least.

Parker looked very good but against a non existent defence .. not sold yet but close to ..

Heeney reminds me of Bartel in the 2nd half of his career. Could probably have continued at 110+ in the midfield but valuable elsewhere on the field.

Ridley reminds me of Bonner last year.
Heeney reminds me of Yeo a couple of years ago.

The truth is, the Danger-Selwood-Ablett trio just didn't work well together as the 3 starting inside mids.

The new structures have me very excited. One of the main criticism on the Geelong forums about Brads coaching has being that he hasn't really taken control as a coach by telling our stars, how and where they are going to play to best serve the team.
Agree with this (it's basically a fact on the stats, so it's probably hard to disagree!).

Some discussion that Selwood played wing, potentially allowing him to communicate better with coaches/other players given the changes to the use of runners.

Noticed this even in the JLT ... like the tactic too ... spare PREM MID sitting on the wing ready to come in ... but to be honest they have plenty of midfield options so can afford this luxury and don't really need to apply a tagger ....

Regarding Ridley, do you mean that he has started really well but could quickly revert to 60 type scores? My impression was that his JS was the biggest issue, but I don't know much about him.

Yeah they mentioned Selwood playing a more outside role in the preseason, looks to be true.

Hard to read a form line on any ESS players JLT + first game thus far ... got him in DT/AF sides more as a placeholder over Moore / Collins etc ..

See him more as an expensive rookie but also the first on my chopping block ...

He didn't start particularly well really. But it was as a part of one of the most pathetic Essendon performances I've seen, and he was one of the few making an effort. There is a lot of injury, possible returns and uncertainty about our backline, but I think he'll keep his spot and get better.

I do, however, understand wanting to cut your losses to spend the cash elsewhere if nothing much changes this week.

I actually like him but he is my weakest link ATM after one game ... but it all comes down to a numbers in this game ... he might not be in that place next week ... I'm actually hoping that is the case as I picked him for a reason ..

Regarding Dom Sheed via after game interview with Adam Simpson.

Q: Dom Sheed had 38 tonight, how's his summer been and do you feel he's sorta ready to really step up to that (unclear word)?

A: I think he's already in a pretty good space, i'll have to watch the vision of what he did off the ball but to get that much of the ball is fantastic for us but when didn't win so it doesn't matter.

I think I read in one of Rowsus dicussions that he pretty much hit career high stats in most aspects during that game .. not all all convinced he can either sustain it or be the main man ....

Yep agreed. I think anyone who is thinking of trading him in has big expectations on someone who was dropped due to his form last season. Maybe it lit a fire under him i'm not sure, but he would need to average at least 20 more than he ever has previously to be a good pick. I think it's a brave person to make the call and trade him in based on 1 or even 2 games data.

Any thoughts on these R2 trades? Not locking them in yet, but almost certain these will be the two trades I make this round:

Mills -> Lloyd
Parker -> Rockliff

Both Swans I'd be getting rid of disappointed me in R1, despite only putting up a bit below par scores. Mills I thought would be getting more midfield time this year, but it didn't happen. Knew that was the risk taking him and I want out before it hurts me further. He won't score enough as a defender. Parker actually did OK, but that was in a couple of patches only, he practically disappeared for at least half the game. I like him as a POD (around 2%), but there are far better choices for the cash.

As to those I'm looking at bringing in, I'm almost certain Lloyd will be a top 6 defender again this year, so may as well lock him in when I can. I don't see him dropping much in price - his current BE is only 70 and he should easily score better than that and will probably go up in price.

Rocky is one I was going to avoid - I know I already regret not picking him for R1, based on last year I will also probably regret picking him in my team too, but that's a risk I am willing to take. The form he is in and price tag is very hard to go past and shows his JLT score wasn't just a one off.

Unlike some people, I don't mind making early trades. The first two rounds are a great time to make changes - IF you make good choices on who to bring in, as you can get players at a discount. After not even getting to 2000 in R1, I think I need to change things up a bit. I'm reasonably confident these two changes will improve my team by around 40 pts per week. Assuming it does - 840 extra pts for two trades is a bargain.

Interesting to see all the discussion about Rocky after one big game. I picked him purely out of FOMO for what he could deliver in R2 and R3 against the Blues and Lions (and because I’m a rocky tragic).

I think with his injury history he is more in that start or forget basket. Can understand the FOMO re missing out on a big score in R2 and R3, but if you didn’t start him in the preseason after a 170, surely you had reasons for it.

B. Crouch > Butters
Collins > Salem/Newman

Or

B. crouch > Gibbons
Collins > Whitfield

Purely for structural change because I want one of Scott/Constable on field instead of Duursma/Scrimshaw.

The reason I'm tempted to do it this week is because there might be other issues next week eg. I don't have M.Parker

Thoughts? Any advice much appreciated

The issue was in his JLT2 game, you couldnt take much from the Port vs North game because no one tackled for the game and it felt like an AFLx game. Now we saw him vs, albiet an underwhelming Melbourne, hit 44 disposals. Most of it was in the second half though when Melbourne looked gassed. Also the new rules suit midfielders and especially the accumulators. well according to treloar in the preseason anyway. This week he plays Carlton, if he goes 150 which is very possible, he'll have a very negative breakeven. Carlton's midfield has definitely improved this year though.

2018 season was a write off for him, first round of shoulder surgery didnt work as well as it did the second time post 2018.

I'm a bit torn, I don't have room for him but he could make more money than a rookie and his ceiling is something I worry about as a non owner.

If you are bringing him in, I agree it's now or never. He does have what looks like a good draw upcoming.

I had him in and out of my team a few times pre-season, he ended up out which was a mistake. I am man enough to admit it and want to fix that mistake. My biggest concern wasn't his injury risk (which is a risk), more not entirely trusting 1 very good pre-season match. 60 was just about ok for JLT1, but not something that made me want to pick him. I wasn't sure if JLT2 was a one time thing or not - it looks like it wasn't. If it costs me a trade now to get him in (or two if he ends up a failure/injured and I need to get rid of him), I'll wear that. Got to make up lost ground somehow.

...He will stink it up or get injured once I trade him in. Guaranteed. I apologise in advance.

I think these are great trades. Parker is meh, had him all last year (assuming you mean Luke Parker). This year the standand for mids is higher, he aint going to cut it. Lloyd is going to be a major league pain in the arse to bring in later. Rockliff upside is big, not without risk, but for his price I don't mind it at all.

Yes, it is Luke I'm looking at trading out. Thought he may have had some upside compared to last year, doesn't look it. I would normally wait another week, but I don't see much changing and I likely need to make at least 1 more trade next week anyway.

No, missed an easy goal, that would have put the tonne up. I'm backing him in but really wishing I could have fit both dunkley and kelly in the lineup... prime candidate if you are looking for an early upgrade round 5 and want some cash...
