On a side note, I heard, the Hawks are changing their game style slightly, any news on that?
Nah sorry. I don't follow other forums / Twitter etc and can't make it to see any training / events etc. Sounds like you probably have more knowledge about them than me, maybe one of the other Hawks supporters knows more.

Thanks Darkie, early days yet with JLT to come, appreciate your thoughts. I normally try to avoid or minimise Blues players, but I think this is the year to pick them, until they lose both JLT games ?.

I'm happy to take Newnes in mids, Martin up forward. I have confidence that the tweaked game plan for this year will see the Blues run the ball out of defence easier via SPS, Newman, Simmo and Doc. I'm a bit cautious with Doc and his knee atm, will assess in due course. I know I need to bring in a Lloyd and Williams in defence, a Fyfe, Danger and Neale in mids, I don't want to rely too much on injured premiums returning at a discounted price.
One for you Professor.

That’s a fair call - if you have some insight into your team’s game plan, especially if it’s changing, then I think backing that could be very logical/beneficial. If you trim some of those $150k+ options, I reckon you’ll be able to shore up at least a couple of spots. Sometimes that can make all the difference.

thanks Darkie, I've made some changes after your advice and looking at some of the threads. Still playing around with my team and will continue to tinker up to lockout. ?

Why the preference?

I like Doedee bye, Roberton with the slightly better scoring history of 5-10 points? anything else?
Role/fitness. Doedee in the leadership group, Smith coming out and saying he's flying and likely to have the same role.
Steven - talk has been about a fwd-mid role as opposed to straight mid. plus his calf injury (combined with recent issues) isn't the endorsement that Smith has received. With Roberton there must be some risk with the heart still and in the time since he last scored well Saints have introduced a couple of youngsters that could take some of his stats - namely Clark

Thanks Dimma

Agree, Steven I expect doesn't get the mid minutes that everyone hopes for.

Smith not currently in side although good numbers in Marsh could see him come into the side.

Currently have Treloar at M6 which may be a little deep, although pains me a little to move him on for Smith and then having two mid pricers. Hoping fund of smith comes from dropping Doedee (D3) down to a 123k rookie.

Sorry Dimma, I may have my wires crossed - is it Doedee you prefer over Roberton, or vice versa?

Sounds like you may prefer Doedee, but I think you mentioned Roberton in the earlier post.

I'm reasonably settled on this team and haven't made any saved changes for over a week.

My plan is to have 24-25 keepers with eventual cover on all lines including ruck. I'll trade heavily after round 3 and I'm not averse to dropping an underperforming premo to a rookie on the bubble which could give me the opportunity to upgrade 3 rookies by round 7 and get a bit of a jump on the pack who will be waiting a little longer for their cows to fatten, I did that last year with McEvoy > RO'B in round 5 but I dont think I'll do that in the Ruc this year.

DEF: 4 Keepers at D3, D4, D5 plus Hill at D7/M7

MID: 6 Keepers at M1, M3, M6, M7, M8 plus Cockatoo at M9/F7

RUC: 2 Keepers

FWD: 4 keepers at F1, F3, F4, F5/6

Leaves me needing to do 8-9 upgrades which I think I need 20-22 trades to achieve, only leaves 8-10 trades for corrections/LTI's/bye structure and rookie cash outs. That might not be enough, so I'm really banking on nailing my initial team, unlike last year when I had a good starting team and stuffed it up in the 2 days leading to lockout.

Risky picks for me are:

Houston....All news is about a permanent move to Mid, looks very likely with Wines out, but still a wait n see
Hill.........Durability is a concern

Lyons....he's in ATS as a value and POD pick.
Cockatoo.....see Hill

Whitfield....see Hill & Cockatoo
Lynch...He scored well in the back half of the year when the Tigers went unbeaten in the last 12 and with 10 of the first 13 at the G I think he's worth a punt.

I would like to hear some feedback (positive, negative, constructive or indifferent) as this is only my second year playing this game and I'm trying to learn as much as I can.

*Edit........Yeah/nah, tell him he's dreamin:D

Really ambitious in terms of keepers but that's fine, I'd be planning around worst case though.

I'm also not a big fan of rookies been classified as keepers in bench roles, their role is to generate cash from the start, that's where the game is won and lost to some degree as it allows you to trade in a Josh Kelly, Fyfe, Neale, Cripps type at $600k rather then settling for a Rory Sloane or Josh Kennedy type at $580k.

Thanks for the feedback NT.T, it's appreciated cos it gets me thinking.

Last year I ended up with Logue on the Def bench, Hannerberry Mid bench and (I'm not sure about) D Moore Fwd bench, with Lycett covering RO'B. The first 3 did save me a bit after I had run out of trades and Lycett would have been handy if he wasn't dropped the same time that RO'B was. So, 2 out of the 3 bench covers were players that I held all year and I found that because I chased the BE's fairly hard I was able to generate enough to hold them, that being said I did end up with Robbie Gray as M8. A good example of what your saying with your advice, so I'll take heed.

Funny how so much changes over the season, last year I couldn't give my trades away and had a full team still last round and just used them for final round match ups bringing Jez Cameron in and Josh Kelly I think. Can guarantee the best laid plans will go out the window as soon as the first ball is bounced round 1 Thursday night.
