Little known (quite interesting) fact; Led Zep were initially called "The New Yardbirds." They changed to LZ in late October 1968. It is said they group would go down like a lead balloon. Balloon became zeppelin and they dropped the letter "a" in lead and the rest is history.

Edit: the origin of the band's name

Written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. The fade out features the phrase “Sedaka is back” in reference to Sedaka’s return to the charts after a lean period.

Yes,joined the Yardbirds as the replacement bass player, and when all members left, changed to New Yardbirds to fulfill contractual gigs with the Yardbirds name, bringing in the lads who would make up Led Zeppelin. Amazing how certain events can have such historical significance.

I saw them outdoors in Auckland in 1971 (I think) as part of an Australasian tour. Would love to know the tour dates, but unfortunately illicit substances have dulled my memory a little. My then gf worked for the radio station that promoted them. She sold cool teeshirts with these four symbols on the front which depicted the great men.

February 25th 1972 at Western Springs Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand.
Western Springs Stadium is an entertainment venue in Auckland, New Zealand, that consists of a natural amphitheatre. During the winter it is used for club rugby union matches and over summer it is used for speedway. It is also occasionally used for large music concerts and festivals.

That would be the one, thanks man. Saw Dylan there as well, but that's for a subsequent post.

Led Zep; not sure whether The Immigrant Song or The Lemon Song ("the way you squeeze my lemon" lol) is my fave non-obvious track.

Wasn’t lucky enough to see them, but could hear them when they played at Kooyong tennis stadium in ‘72,since we lived quite close. Although I was quite young,I can still remember being so intrigued by the “noise”. Australasian tour was in Feb. 72,so your memory isn’t too bad. While I couldn’t remember actual dates,I’ll never forget the year because my old boss used to go on and on about how great it was.

A great song writer! "Oh Carol" only one of my Neil Sedaka's favourite.

Gilbert and Frank are thrilled to welcome rock ‘n’ roll icon Neil Sedaka, who discusses growing up in Brooklyn, his apprenticeship at the famed Brill Building, his chart-topping collaborations with lyricist Howard Greenfield and his memories of Bobby Darin, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Richard Rodgers and Paul McCartney (among others). Also, Bob Dylan offers praise, John Lennon provides inspiration, Mick Jagger buys a Sedaka record and Neil remembers his cousin Eydie Gorme. PLUS: The Captain & Tennille! Elton John to the rescue! The late, great Len Maxwell! Billy Joel “borrows” a melody! And Neil demonstrates his songwriting process!

If you write over 500 songs, you are bound to have some great ones among them, ay.

Neil Sedaka (born March 13, 1939) is an American pop singer, pianist, composer and record producer. Since his music career began in 1957 as a short-lived founding member of the Tokens, he has sold millions of records as an artist and has written or co-written over 500 songs for himself and others, collaborating mostly with lyricists Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody.

Another Sedaka and Greenfield hit, performed by Tony Christie-

Originally the song was going to be titled “Is This The Way To Pensacola”.

Attending an all boys catholic secondary college, only had 3 brothers, I was very girl shy as a teenager, but I managed to get the nerve to ask a girl out to the movies. We held hands in the train from the Melbourne cinema and I even got a kiss, my first love . This song was on the charts at the time and when I hear this song, it always brings back those beautiful memories. (BTW, a couple of weeks later she dumped me because she met a guy who had a car :( ). This song, "The girl that I love" by Russell Morris, still gives me goose bumps :)
